@dandr69 the weird title look isnt because of bbpress, its how your theme reacts to long titles.

and you can put that code i gave you anywhere where you can put custom css,

    a child themes css stylesheet
jetpacks custom css module if you have jetpack
if your theme has a custom css area in the appearance settings
    a standalone custom css plugin

I should add that I have bbpress version 2.5.4, and the newest version of WordPress.

and here’s a link to my site so you can see what’s going on: http://www.freelanceabroad.com/groups/writers/forum/

I’m trying to get bbpress up and running with Buddypress, and it’s all working fine except that the topics are not showing up in the forums.

The forums themselves are showing up, but when I click on a category it takes me to the page where the topics should be, and it has the message, “This forum contains 2 topics and was last updated…”

Then under that there’s the message, “Oh bother! No topics were found here!”

But if there are 2 topics, they should be found there, no?

I’ve tried looking at it with the twenty fourteen theme, and the topics to in fact show up. So why wouldn’t they show up in the other theme?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I recently changed theme and seems that this impacts bbpress also. If I have a long title, it splits on two lines and the one bellow has not enough space:

WordPress 4.0 – This page has a redirect loop

    Thankx for the help!

    Hello,

    at the moment I have:

    website.ext: html pages
    website.ext/blog/: wordpress 4.0
    website.ext/forum/: bbpress 1.0.2

I managed to import my jurassic bbpress installation into wordpress via plugin, I just dont find a way to keep my forum on the current url.

It’s true i can change the slug in the settings, but it would just be a different name under the /blog/ directory like, for example, website.ext/blog/myforum/

My question is: is it possible to import my old forum via plugin from website.ext/blog/ and have the forum where it is now (website.ext/forum/)?

    Thank you very much.

I hope it’s OK to post something like this…

I’m brand new to bbpress and not a professional developer. I’m using it with Buddypress on my new site – I’m moving a community from Facebook to the site. A lot of my members are not very net-savvy and are unfamiliar with how forums works. So, I’m trying to offer familiar functions that they’ve seen on Facebook. The forum is going to be the main hub of the site, so I need to get it look good and easy to use.

Set up has gone well, but the forum is just looking a bit dull.

Is there a better way I can display the forum to show the activity?

Are there any other plugins people would recommend to make the forums as similar as possible to what my members have been used to in the Facebook group?

I have a Latest Activity feed on the site homepage which shows all forum activity:
This looks a bit more compelling than the forum page, but it would be nice if it could have things like reply buttons or ‘Go to forum’ to make it more obvious how people can get in the conversations.

Just looking for suggestions really. Thanks. 🙂

    Plugins

Deactivate all but bbpress and see if this fixes. if it does, re-enable one at a time to see which is causing the error.

    Themes

If plugins don’t pinpoint the problem, as a test switch to a default theme such as twentytwelve, and see if this fixes.

I have this issue when the plugin Yoast WordPress SEO is activated but I dont know how to fix this…

The url of the page displays in the meta title only on the bbpress forum for the profile, search and tag pages.

    Thanks

When I bring up the forum page on my site, I get:

    bbPress was detected.
Looks like your running a supported plugin but your not using our integrations whatsit.
Get it from the store now! → This link doesn’t work!

    What do I do now?

    Hello,
I run a multisite installation and one of my users is having problems using bbPress. They’ve activated it but can’t see the Forums/Topics/Replies menu items nor the “Forums” options under Settings and Tools. I’ve been able to recreate this by creating a new site and enabling bbPress. Regular site-admins do not have access to bbPress but I (superadmin) can see it all.

    Wordpress: v3.9.1
    bbPress: v2.5.4

Yes to remove the author only but nothing else

revert what you did and show the author, so it would look like this

    [:)] user 1 on topic 1
    [:(] user 1 on topic 2
    [:'(] user 2 on topic 1
    [:{)] user 3 on topic 1

because its less weird than this

    topic 1
    topic 2
    topic 1
    topic 1

or at least click show date in the widget settings

i know you dont want to show 5 recent replies topics that are the same

other ways are for your users to create more topics and make them more active so the recent replies widget shows recent replies for more than 1 topic , and it doesnt look weird

but other than that if i gave you a function to not show the actual recent replies

if you have these topics that had recent replies

    topic 1
    topic 1
    topic 3
    topic 5
    topic 7
    topic 1

and i wanted to only show

    topic 1
    topic 3
    topic 5
    topic 7

i just skipped them and they arent really recent replies across your site anymore
its just now the bbpress recent topics widget with the topics with recent replies settings on

    Hi,

I still have not been able to resolve the issue of the Forum Page’s page title being a link to itself and the additional link in breadcrumbs that is also a link to the page it is on.

I have followed the ‘Step by step guide to setting up bbPress’. The documentation shows a screenshot of a forum working within a twentyten theme that is set up the way I am trying to set up my forum. The Forum Page title is not a link and there is not an additional link in breadcrumbs. Breadcrumbs shows a ‘Home’ link and then the current page ‘forums’. I am using the Thematic theme. I am now including a home page in breadcrumbs.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you for your time.

I have read a few of the previous posts and saw lots of interesting topics come by.

First I have to make a statement and a thank you.

Statement: BBPress is exactly what I need in a forum, yes I think it is forum software and forum software only.

Also it is a wordpress plugin, not a standalone CMS so I can not expect it to have all functions I wish for, but then there are plugins for most of them.

As a non-professional developer I had my share of problems after the first install, and coming from phpBB (only for 5 months there) I missed a lot of funtions mentioned in earlier posts that come standard in stand-alone forum CMS like IPBoard and VBulletin.

Those two (IPB VBull) have been my inspiration and I wanted a forum with similar functions, after trying phpBB for a few months, which I really enjoyed as a learning curve, I decided to give wordpress/bbpress/buddypress a try.

I have now been experimenting and learning the wordpress syntax for about 1 year, and have only one thing to say:

BBPress is the better forum software for me.

I can now make a perfect profile page.
    BBFacelook

I can have forums with the right hierarchy.
    BBFacelook

I can have all the extras that make other forum CMS cool thanks to some lightweight plugins, even attachments/images in posts can be made to look better then many other forums I visit.

Of course all is not perfect, I am not alone in hoping to see better image management, private albums, better TinyMCE editor, moderator functions/pages and the all important “like” function, but all in all BBP is just as functional as many high profile forums.

being a wordpress plugin makes BBPress modular, user friendly enough and highly functional not to forget absolutely FREE, besides a few hundered hours of brain pain.

Anyway, back to my theme (BBFacelook) development.

Furthermore, after disabling BackWPup and then going into user edit (new or existing) the Forum role is gone (with bbPress still active). The Site role contains both the 4 minor site roles and the 3 BackWPup roles.
If I install bbPress first, then BackWPup, everything seems to go fine. All admins remain admin, and the separate columns for both BackWPup roles and Forum roles are visible and, in user edit, adjustable. Site role still has all the roles, including administrator.
Now when I deactivate bbPress the forum roles disappear, and the other roles are still intact. After activating bbPress again and, after checking every role is there in proper places, then deactivating backWPup, it happens again. Now I have forum roles intact, but site roles now has not only the five standard roles (yup, including admin), but also the backWPup roles.

So, concluding it seems the problem is more with backWPup then bbPress. I will add my findings to their support.

@robin-w I beg to differ a little, the behaviour seems to suggest it is something else going on.

It is only child forums that seem to be having this issue.
If a forum is is set up as a child of a forum (set as type category) the result is a 404 Error.
if that link is broken (the forum has been set to have no parent) then the forum loads.

The permalink doesn’t change ?forum=general query string is the same for both. This is with all plugins disabled and on different themes.

There must be something that works differently code wise between the two.
    Seems very odd.

It has also worked quite happily for the last year on default permalinks with the current plugin setup quite happily.
Something has changed the method in the way that it works, either through a bbpress release or WordPress 4.0 release

    Dude you are awesome.
    Thank you so much.
A couple of things: The counts are gone but now the bullets are layered over the names of the forums. Is there a way to leave the main theme’s bullets alone but in the Forum bbPress reverts to generic bullet points that it’s compatible with?
    http://ecopsi.org/forums/

Also I must have made a mistake with the breadcrumb code.

// Custom breadcrumb label for bbPress
    function my_change_forum_root_breadcrumb_title( $args = array() ) {
    	if ( ! empty( $args ) ) {
    		$args['root_text'] = 'The EcoPsi Forums';
    	}
    	return $args;
    }
    add_filter( 'bbp_before_get_breadcrumb_parse_args', 'my_change_forum_root_breadcrumb_title' );

    Hi guys,

My bbpress forum was working fine until I had to restore my website and I just realized that none of the topics/replies are visible. When you open the forum it does say there are topics in there and mention the user, but when you click on the specific forum it tells me no topics were found.

Thanks in advance for the help!

It’s both. bbPress is setup to automagically create the /forums page out of thin air. If you’d like to add some other text to this page, you may do that as well. If you do create an actual forums page, as it seems you have, all that’s needed is to add the forums shortcode where ever you’d like the forum index to appear. In this case, just add [bbp-forum-index]. There are a number of other shortcodes that can be used for similar purposes that can be found here https://codex.bbpress.org/shortcodes/.

I think you may be inferring the import doesn’t ever actually finish?
If that is the case see the docs here: https://codex.bbpress.org/import-forums/import-troubleshooting/

Thanks for this link Stephen. It is relaoding again from where it stoped. Fingers crossed 😉

    – Once the import hangs, click stop, take a note of where it was up to, e.g. Converting 11,299 – 11,300
    – Click start again and the import will continue from where it left off

Once the import finishes you will be prompted with a link to the repair tools, you need to run each of these after importing so bbPress, you can’t do this until everything is imported.

Edit: I think you may be inferring the import doesn’t ever actually finish?
If that is the case see the docs here: https://codex.bbpress.org/import-forums/import-troubleshooting/

I’m a newbie to bbpress, and while I think I’m getting there, here’s what I’m trying to create:

-All registered users can create topics and replies
-The home page shows top trending topics by freshness (regardless of forum) using [bbp-topic-index]
-Users are required to select a forum (e.g ‘cars’ or ‘trucks’) when posting topics so that users who want to sort by car or truck may do so

The look I’m going for is the user seeing top 25 topics on home page regardless of forum (cars or trucks) but those users who want to look for car or truck-specific topics can still do so.

    Questions:
    1) Is this possible? Is there a better way to do this within bbpress?
    2) How to set user default to ‘contributor’?
    3) How to require forum selection?

    *I’m using the Avada theme
