    TrishaM – I have this working on a 0.9.0.2 installation… you can see it in action here:

    What tags did you put into your template to enabling voting (and the display of the votes)?

    Topic: Sticky post

    in forum Troubleshooting

    Hi! I’m just getting my feet wet with bbPress. Two quick questions:

    1- Is it possible for a forum administrator to upgrade a post by another user to a “sticky post”?

    2- Is there a function/plug in where users can vote to make a post a sticky post?

    #72739

    Better is subjective.

    I don’t want a cash mod. I don’t want PMing. I don’t need a full role manager.

    So I vote for ‘other’ as ‘none’ :)

    I see a bunch of people voted for their own site and nothing else?

    Come on, there are some nice designs out there to vote for…

    Well it’s been six month now so we’re long overdue

    for another (completely unofficial) TOP 100 report!

    http://bbshowcase.org/forums/view/top100

    Top 1000 requires free registration/login:

    http://bbshowcase.org/forums/view/top1000

    New this year is the ability to vote on sites, based on quality/content, so even if a site is not in the regular Top 100 list, be sure to “vote it up” and I will post another list soon with the highest votes. There are some really nice looking forums running bbPress out there that deserve some votes. You must be a member to vote but registration is free of course. The Top 1000 list can also be searched when you are logged in, as well as an experimental Tag Cloud

    When we last left the list, it had just topped over 4000 websites.

    In the newest list, despite roughly 1000 sites disappearing (small test installs, etc.) the list is now over 6000 strong! This means an average of 15 sites per day are installing and sticking with bbPress. About 10% of these forums are running the new 1.0 alpha (and half of those have not upgraded to the newest 1.0a6, so they need to keep up with the releases).

    At this rate, next time I am going to have to make it the Top 10,000 list.

    However I am sad to report a dark side has emerged in bbPress’s growth. Because of how much easier bbPress is to control and manipulate with just a basic knowledge of PHP/MySQL compared to other forum software, some “black hats” have latched onto bbPress in order to create a big content spamming network, nearly 200 sites strong. They aim these sites at search engines with topics such as gambling, lottery and foreign currency exchanges. You can see them at the very end of the Top 1000 list, where they sit demoted. This really doesn’t affect the average forum operator in any way, it’s just unfortunate to see. WordPress went through this kind of event too, I just hate to see it happen.

    ps. This list also marks the first inclusion of a TalkPress powered site and while it only has a couple dozen posts because it’s brand new, it has the easy access of 7.5million WordPress.com members so it’s bound to grow quickly!

    The CSS style and placement of the polls bothers me. I’d really like to see the poll at the top of the actual post, not in the sidebar.

    But as far as function goes, they seem to be working alright. I inputted my vote and it worked fine.

    Please pardon the stupid noob post. I am completely new to this area of technology. I am looking for a solution which will function as a corporate portal/intranet.

    I like the horizontal tabs as featured on this site. My site would have tabs with company news, policies and procedures, links, blog(s), and of course discussion forums. I am also expecting to have flexible layout capabilities…multiple columns, etc.

    With that in mind, I have two questions:

    1. Is the entire bbpress.org site strictly bbpress, or does it also utilize WordPress?

    2. Does bbPress allow for multiple moderators? Our discussion forums will be devoted to various topics, with subject matter experts within the company moderating.

    I was going to sit this thread out, until I saw some of the recent comments.

    I understand that there is frustration over the WordPress integration issues (I share them as well). But I don’t think it’s fair or productive to lash out at the very people that make this community move forward (Sam and _ck_, among others).

    The motivation and energy of key contributors is the most precious asset of an open source community, as they are what keeps the community forward.

    The feedback and ideas of key users is also hugely important, as they tell the community where to go.

    But when feedback attacks the motivation and energy of key contributors, I’ve learned not to just sit back. Because even if the feedback is 100% dead on, if the key contributors are hurt by the way it’s delivered… then as a community, we have been stopped dead in our tracks.

    I think we all agree that full integration with a shared signin is a priority. If we unite behind that goal, maybe we can achieve it. I just think that the motivation and energy of key contributors is key to our getting there.

    One last thought: Sam appears to work mostly on bbPress, whereas the integration work needs to be done on the WordPress side. So if we want to advocate for full integration, maybe we should organize as a community? If you look at the most popular “ideas” for WordPress, full integration isn’t on the list:

    https://wordpress.org/extend/ideas/?show=popular

    I am probably missing it, but I don’t even see full integration as a submitted idea here:

    https://wordpress.org/extend/ideas/search.php?q=bbpress&forums=1

    If we could agree as a community on the wording, I’m sure we could all vote it up. We only need 159 votes to get onto the list of Most Popular Ideas. Maybe that would help Sam’s ticket get some developers assigned to it.

    I would rather focus our energies there, especially since I don’t believe that our discussions here are going to change the priorities of the WordPress development team (which is what we need to move forward).

    Best,

    John

    I say “why restrict the characters in the login?” I would vote to leave them in. Most people won’t use them, especially if they’ve been around for a while and are used to no spaces in usernames. But why arbitrarily limit the characters in the username?

    There is a bug in the older template you are using.

    Find these line in your header.php in your template folder:

    <?php bb_enqueue_script('topic'); bb_head(); ?>
    <?php endif; ?>

    and change it to this:

    <?php bb_enqueue_script('topic'); ?>
    <?php endif; ?>
    <?php bb_head(); ?>

    I think your broke your htaccess as I can’t see any topic.

    If people can’t see the bars that probably means the CSS is not being included for some reason. Might need to check for bb_head in your header template.

    Works fine for me with default template in newest 1.0 alpha. Or do you mean you want anonymous people to be able to vote. That’s not possible.

    Any particular reason you started a new topic on this rather than asking on the page for the plugin itself?

    I am using bbPress 1.0 alpha. Anonymous user can view vote result text only not vote bar.How to fix it?

    Does bbpress allow for… or is there a plugin to allow for…

    holding a topic entry for Admin to approve before displaying on the frontend?

    I’m wanting to create a ‘picture contest’ entry page.

    Memebers login, open then page, and upload an image to be voted/rated.

    I’d like for Admin to approve each before making each entry visible on the frontend.

    It’s time to take another look at the (unofficial) bbPress Top 100 list! I’ve come up with some more advanced ways to find bbPress forums and I am pleased to announce the full list has broken 3,000 forums and provided for some new discoveries for the Top 100:

    http://bbshowcase.org/forums/view/top100

    (based on activity, not quality, which is subjective)

    If you register/login you can also see the sites that may have just missed the top 100 via the top 1000:

    August update was essentially aimed at finding new sites, not updating stats for existing sites. I’ll do a full re-analysis next month.

    Some really nice looking sites among the bunch. I enabled “snapshots” so you can mouse-over their little logo and get a general preview. I hope to improve the list soon with the ability to vote on the design of any site.

    Also new for this month is an attempt to guess what country the site is “aimed at” (not hosted in or TLD used). This is very difficult to determine and I estimate my automated route is currently correct only 70% of the time.

    Some interesting statistics…

    1) bbPress has been installed on at least 4000 sites

    2) There are now at least 200 sites with over 1000 posts.

    3) A bbPress forum will break one million posts late 2008

    More analysis as I have time…

    If I missed your site be sure to post it for the next update!

    Hi all

    I am going live with my site soon, and was wondering how the showcase of Top 100 forums is rated. Is it by number of users on each forum or is it voted for?

    Thanks :)

    How can we vote on this? Clearly lots of people want easier integration with their site – its just too bloody hard to get it going.

    Bring on a WordPress [shortcode] and widgets!!

    I’m very happy with how easy it it get the accounts to jive but what about the front end of our websites. I don’t expect the bbPress team to just start listening and acting on what I say – but I will put my money where my mouth is and if the bbPress team spoke to us and pointed us in the right direction – what hooks to use etc then I would even look at doing the code to make it happen.

    But I don’t even know if people care :P

    Can somebody set that spammer on fire? Please!!! Seriously hot sticky napalm would be just fine…

    Nobody can login to our site at all – including Admin.

    We will probably hack it to work – but I think we should all vote for bbPress [shortcodes] and widgets.

    1) [bbPress]

    2) bbPress widgets

    Hail bbPress [shortcodes] and widgets ;)

    I too vote to drop multiviews. However, if enough people depend on this, could permalinks be made pluggable so that a multiviews plugin could be written? If that’s too much work, that’s OK with me, just suggesting it as a compromise solution…

    With the 0.9 release, and now six months after the first roundup, I figured it was time to take another look at the (completely unofficial) bbPress Top 100 list:

    http://bbshowcase.org/forums/view/top100

    While about 200 sites have gone missing from the previous list, I managed to find about 600 more to make up for it, so the list is now at just under 1500 (a 50% growth).

    If you register/login you can also see the sites that may have just missed the top 100, or see the whole deal via the top 1000:

    http://bbshowcase.org/forums/view/top1000

    Some really nice looking sites among the bunch. I enabled “snapshots” so you can mouse-over the their little logo and get a general preview. I hope to improve the list someday with the ability to vote on the design of any site to raise it higher in the list (or a separate list for top design).

    If I missed your site, be sure to let me know for the next update…

    I don’t want this functionality included in bbPress. Do it with a plugin. Keep bbPress lean. That’s my vote.
