    errored when installed

Those are just warnings and will not prevent bbPress from running. There are lots of warnings and notices and deprecated messages with PHP software. Normally in a production environment you would not see them. The messages you’ve posted are not errors, they’re just noise which you can suppress.

    Hello!

I’m having trouble with the bbPress installation, and haven’t been able to get the forum up and running.

I’ve got WordPress 2.8.6 installed on a test site (it’s up and running fine), and I wanted to also have a forum on the same site. I want to try bbPress because of the possibility of integration between WP and bbPress. It would be nice if users could log in once, and be able to post comments on the blog portion of the site or post messages in the forum side of the site, and not have to manage two separate logins.

I downloaded bbPress 1.0.2, uploaded it to my web server, ran the bbPress installer, and entered the info requested, including the MySQL settings for database name, database username, database password,

MySQL hostname, and clicked “Continue” (or something to that effect). The message I got back was that it had a problem opening the database. At this point, I noticed there was a checkbox or something like that on the installer page where I could enter additional details, so I clicked on that, and it asked for ‘AUTH_KEY’, ‘SECURE_AUTH_KEY’, ‘LOGGED_IN_KEY’, and ‘NONCE_KEY’.

I remember generating these keys the last time I upgraded WordPress, so I had to download the wp-config.php file from my server and poke through it for these strings, but I found them, so I entered them into the bbPress installer page.

In addition to those key strings, the bbPress installer page was also asking for “salts” for each of those keys. I had no idea what the “salts” might be, but when I clicked on the help button next to the entry field, it said that if you didn’t have this it would check with the server during installation.

So I left the “salt” fields blank, and clicked “Continue.”

An installation log was generated, and I saved it as a text file. I won’t put the whole thing in this message, but the installation process modified the database tables without problems. In Step 2 of the process (WordPress integration), it reported “WordPress cookie keys set” and went on to “Fetching missing WordPress cookie salts.” It said that the WordPress “auth” cookie salt was successfully set, but the next one was where the trouble may have begun, as it reported WordPress “secure auth” cookie salt NOT set. The WordPress “logged in” cookie salt was set OK.

Finally, in Step 3, it listed the site settings for me. But one of the lines read “Forum could not be created!”

Following that line were two lines reporting that directories were established for my plugins and themes. I used my FTP program to check my server, and those two directories were indeed created.

And, of course, it summed things up by saying “some errors encountered during installation!”

But at the same time, there was a message that I should go to http://www.mydomain.com/bbpress, and that the forum should launch.

I went to that page, but every time I do, I get redirected to:

    http://www.mydomain.com/bbpress/bb-admin/install.php

    Where the message says:

    Oh dear!

    bbPress is already installed.

Perhaps you meant to run the upgrade script instead?

Well, no, I don’t want to run the upgrade script, since I’m trying to do a first-time install.

So, I don’t know where to proceed from here.

One question in my mind is if the installer script was able to find and set the salts for three of the keys OK, why couldn’t it set the “secure auth” cookie salt?

Second question is why do I get a page telling me bbPress is already installed, when the installation script says the forum could not be created?

Any guidance anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Well this really sucks. I just sent her a donation yesterday and now she pulls the plug. I was hoping my donation would encourage her but I think I just reminded her to shut things down.

I appreciate everything she’s done for bbPress, and hope she’ll come back when things are sorted out with bbPress.

@Olaf talks is cheap, matt needs to respond with action, i bet if WP lead developer left the project, within 24 hours matt would appoint someone else to take over. I know bbpress is not a main project to automattic but at least it should not be ignored like this

    Hello,

I think I have these two integrated and working but seems to be a problem with the bbpress keymaster having access to the wp-admin area. The only solution I have so far is to have 2 admins…

    one for WP ( a:1:{s:13:”administrator”;b:1;} )

    &

    one for BB ( a:1:{s:9:”keymaster”;b:1;} )

I have set the role in the bbpress-admin for wp-admins to be keymasters but it doesn’t seem to work…

    Am I doing something wrong?

    Thanks

    :)

I don’t mean to sound picky but SimplePress looks like a cluttered mess. It’s like trying to integrate an SMF board with wordpress and they don’t even look the same.

I guess I got used to the simplicity of bbPress. I’m still going to use it, however, as long as bbPress.org is up and running and the WP.com forums uses it. This only means less themes and plugins.

actually there is a response from Matt:

    https://bbpress.org/forums/topic/future-of-bbpress

    https://bbpress.org/forums/topic/help-out-with-bbpress

both topics are not so old and tell me the that something is going on.

I’m more concerned if someone “evil” has found some security issue in bbpress and there is no one who will provide an update…

You can work around the bug by installing the topics-per-page plugin, and then editing your template:

    https://bbpress.org/forums/topic/navigation-not-working-only-for-page-1#post-56239

You can find the plugin here:

Thanks Steven, for posting this announcement.

Really bad that it looks like that bbpress has not some great future.

Actually I think about to convert my bbpress forum into a wordpress site using a theme that looks like a forum :)

Can’t be so difficult, the whole structure of bbpress looks too much like wordpress

(… another XX hours lost in the development of bbpress plugins)

With the sudden sticky for bbPress help, _ck_ shutting down her site and the previous post by her about refunding donations, I’m kinda wondering what is going on with bbPress. Hopefully someone with more info will chime in and explain the future of bbPress to the rest of us.

It sounds like either bbPress is pointing to the wrong db, or you are including files from WP such that it is overriding the db bbPress is looking at and is accidentally looking at the WP db. Make sure you are not including any WP files in the bb-config.php and bb-settings.php files.

I have integrated my test forum with wordpress. Both have seperate databases and are on the same host server but bbpress is in a sub-directory, Wp is in the root. WordPress has 4 members bbpress has 300, afterwords bbpress has only 4 members, why is that, it seems like instead of integration wordpress details have overwritten bbpress…any one able to help

I just tried to drop by bbShowcase and found this waiting for anyone visiting

The bbPress Showcase has been discontinued.

The removal of Sam Bauers and the halting of bbpress.org 2.0

was a clear and final sign that there is no interest in allowing

bbPress to become a mature, robust program and community.

By now bbPress 1.5 could have been in alpha but instead

bbPress development has been deliberately stagnated,

which should be a very alarming warning to everyone.

In addition, bbShowcase had only six donations in 2009,

which indicated to me there was no interest in my work.

My code will remain on bbpress.org as open source GPL

for those that wish to use it, however I caution you to

consider bbPress’s lack of leadership before continuing to use it.

Please do not do send donations anymore.

For those that have in the past 24 hours because of this thread please ask Amazon or your credit company for a refund or I’ll send you back the gift certificate numbers if they can’t refund for some reason.

Any donations sent as of this month will not be used,

I repeat, do not send any further donations.

You need to create a theme for bbPress that looks like your WordPress theme. That is how most people do integration.

I’ve also heard of people using a iframe to put bbPress inside a WordPress page, but I don’t recommend that.

    Changing $empty_format = ””;

    to

    $empty_format = ”/”;

    make’s it work.

MANY, MANY thanks. Anyway of me being able to make this work now without having to modify the core bbPress code? My concern is that I want to be able to upgrade bbPress in the future without having to remember I made this modification to the core function.

Ok, I had no problem with the integration. Both WP and bbPress are working and the users are sharing fine.

Now, HOW DO I get either

    1) WordPress to show the forums inside it?

    or

    2) bbPress to look like the template I have for wp? Template is customized Mandigo theme.

If you have an account at wordpress.org forums, you can log in with those details at trac.bbpress.org. I’m not sure how else to create an account that will work there.

I have successfully moved a set of SMF 2.0RC1.1 forums to bbPress 1 with a stop off in phpBB3. It’s definitely not something for an inexperienced user to consider but like I said above I’ll be documenting the whole process sometime after this coming week.

I’ve recently been introduced to BBpress, did a migration from FUDforum for http://cycling74.com/forums.

Posted the scripts to migrate as well as the plugin to redirect FUDforum links on github.

    http://github.com/aufumy/migratefud2bb

    http://github.com/aufumy/redirect_fudlinks

Myself: worked with Drupal at Raincity Studios. Contributed on core patches, and contrib modules.

Strengths: Data import, database, openid, apache solr

What part of BBPress I’d like to be part of: currently just getting to know it, helping out with forums, plugins.

It appears to be an issue with permalinks. Try and add this line to your bb-config.php file:

    $bb->mod_rewrite = false;

If this is the case, make sure you setup permalinks correctly, since they don’t work out of the box. You can see how to do it Here
