Chrishajer, I’ll try. There are several reasons why it doesn’t work but I’ll write it here. I usually find it and then write about it but I’ll try your way.

1 When installing wordpress/bbpress do NOT use “www.” Example: use bbpress.org not http://www.bbpress.org and use the same database. You do not need to change the prefix, I prefer you don’t because you’ll run into problem later.

2 Make sure bbpress is in a folder in wordpress. example: wordpress/bbpress/ not on the same level.

3 The folder does not have to be named bbpress, most people make it forum or forums.

*After successfully installing both programs open wp-config.php (in the wordpress folder) file. Around line # 45-# 48 you’ll see define(‘AUTH_KEY’…. go to this URL (https://api.wordpress.org/secret-key/1.1/salt) and get the EIGHT keys and REPLACE the FOUR keys that are there. Save. Keep the file open for now.

4 Open bb-config.php (in the bbpress folder) do the same thing here. With the SAME keys you put in the wordpress file put in the bb-config file around line # 41-45. Save. Keep the file open for now.

5 Clear your cache on your browser. Log into your bbpress dashboard and go to Settings->Wordpress Integration-> WordPress Administrator should be keymaster. Every other option should be member for now. WordPress address (URL) should be the URL again NO www. Blog address (URL) the same as before. The last 3 should be LOCKED if not repeat the steps 3&4.

6 Login to your wordpress dashboard. Go to Plugins->Add New-> search for “bbPress Integration” it should be the first one. Install it and activate.

7 Go to Settings-> bbPress Integration. Enter the bbPress URL without the www. Your plugins URL leave blank. Click on Save Changes. On the bottom box you’ll see some text copy it. Most likely it will say “define( ‘COOKIEPATH’, ‘/’ );”

8 Paste the line in wp-config.php file around line # 16 (MUST be on top. Don’t know why) and paste it in bb-config.php in line # 13 (Must be on top). Save. You can delete the plugin, it’s no longer needed.

9 Clear your cache on your browser and you’re done.

Known Problems

*Two different database, one for WP and one for BBP, does not always work.

*Changing the database prefix. There are tutorials out there that tell you to do it, just don’t.

*Hosting companies that offer free databases, have buggy databases.

*BBpress not being in WordPress folder. I don’t think the plugin takes that into account.

gerikg – please post what you find. Maybe it’s a simple mistake that everyone is making, or you can show how the integration documentation needs to be updated to make this easier for everyone.

I know it’s sometimes easier to just go and fix stuff yourself instead of going back and forth in a forum trying to figure out what’s wrong, but I really do hope someone posts a procedure for integrating logins that will work for everyone. alpacino85 did what I think most reasonable people would do: download the most recent version of both software packages and then follow the latest integration instructions (even though they’re out of date), but that doesn’t seem to work. Lots of people have the same exact issue (logging into WordPress logs you our of bbPress or vice versa) so I hope there’s on little “gotcha” or “ah ha” that can be posted to take care of this for most people. Thanks.

OK, switching back to the default theme allows me to change user roles. If I then switch back to my current theme a user who I’ve changed to a moderator can still moderate posts.

So I guess we’ve identified a couple of things:

1. My custom theme is broken at the point where user profiles are being edited

2. It also seems the WordPress integration is broken

Any further pointers you can give me on how to correct these would be great, thanks for all your help so far.

User with role in bbPress and without role in WordPress log in to WordPress and WordPress change role none to your WordPress default role.

I integrated wordpress Version 2.8.6 with bbpress Version 1.0.2

My user table is correctly shared, couse i can login on both.

When I switch from wordpress to bbpress, I am nog logged in, if i log in on bbpress i get logged out on wordpress.

Does any one know what i did wrong ?

2. Does this problem occur when you use a stock theme like Kakumei?

And your integration is not correct if when you log in to WordPress you get logged out of bbPress.

@chrishajer : It’s not a hosting provider like the rest ! It’s like the WordPress.com service, it just gives free PhpBB2 hosting, but no FTP or SQL access, and their support refuses to give the SQL files .

4. Yes, version 2.8.6. However I’ve also noticed that when I log into the blog it logs me out of WordPress, so perhaps the integration is also faulty?

Here are some steps when converting WP plugins into BB:

1. Change everything from WP to bb (except some functions like wp_enqueue_scripts, etc – they are borrowed as it is from WP, actually they are in BackPress)
2. Activation & Deactivation are hooks, not functions
3. There are some different functions like bb_title();, bb_option('description');, bb_option(’uri’);
4. If a function name doesnt start with wp_, then most of the times bb_ is added to avoid conflicts when WP functions are loaded into bbPress (integrated)
5. There are also functions like bb_is_topic() etc like is_single() in WP
6. etc….

Greetings all (I have removed the 888 from my user-name – I just couldn’t stand it anymore)

I hope someone can guide me or point me in the right direction here. In various attempts to understand how the bbPress plugin system works, I am trying to convert a few WordPress plugins into bbPress ones.

I’m starting off with “WP-Cumulus” as well as “Let It Snow”. I’m not sure, however, what to look out for. For example, what are the differences between WP and bbPress when it comes to adding extra admin and profile info.

What things should I look for while I go about doing this?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

1. What version of bbPress are you using?

2. Are you using a custom theme?

3. What plugins are you using and does disabling them allow this to work again?

4. Are you integrated with WordPress and if so what version?

It’s probably not the CSS, but my guess is it’s something related to this specific setup. Maybe the language in use or the RTL CSS or integration with WordPress. bbPress does this by default when you type something that looks like a URL. Here I will just type something and bbPress will just linkify it: http://www.google.com (I typed www google com but with the periods in it)

whatever you do with bbPress, please make sure to keep it SIMPLE to be used by “average internet users” and “newbies”.

Only “simple to use” applications enjoy huge success. Look at Craigslist, Facebook, etc.

Features need to add value for the user and provide easy to use interface.

For example looking at the WordPress-Dashboard “Admin-interface”, I still believe this interface is way too complicated to use and not really self-explanatory. A newby will be confused and just click away from it.

bbPress normally does. Looks to be not working in your installation for some reason. Can you try the standard style.css instead of the RTL css and see if the links become clickable?

Also, what plugins are you running? And are you integrated with WordPress?
