    Hi,

I have a forum where my users need to be able to have the option to view in two languages. I have added the necessary language files and when any language is defined, it works fine.

But I need users to be able to choose language of their choice. Is there any way to do it?

    I did find a plugin,
    bbpress language switcher

and an updated version of it.
    bbpress language switcher updated

but it does not work for current version of bbpress. I tried to update it but there are too many functions that I am not familiar with.
Is there some other similar plugins?

On a related note, how is the language options provided in this page? (under the subpages heading)
    bbpress in your language

Ah ha – and hmm, would it still pick up the rest of the defaults, eg img and blockquote and those? The correct answer to this question is “You have a test install, play with it and figure it out yourself.” so I will. Later.

I know what you mean about the amount that can be learned in 12 months. 12 months I was trying and trying to convince a client that they didn’t want a forum! Of course, that was for reasons other than development but it has turned out very well – cheap and easy (ok maybe not cheap and maybe not super simple when you count in moderation and user issues and all that) but an excellent way to get constantly updated content.

Update. Monday I asked my iPad, iPhone moderator to see if she could get a keyboard to come up, see what she was typing and actually post to the forum. She reported that it was working perfectly! No kidding! So after the WordPress 3.9 upgrade, the tinyMCE 4 upgrade has improved interaction with iPads and iPhones.

    See: http://www.tinymce.com/index.php
Also: tinyMCE 4 has a presentation that explains what is different.
    http://www.tinymce.com/presentation/index.html#/

I did a little research about tinyMCE because honestly it sounds like the name of a toy. So once I found the name, Tiny Moxiecode Content Editor, it made more sense to me. Wikipedia describes it as “platform-independent web-based JavaScript/HTML WYSIWYG editor control.” So, in a sense, this is the core element of WordPress (and other CMS platforms), giving the user the ability to get content on the blog without having to necessarily understand anything about HTML.

After browsing some forums I better understand that this upgrade of WP and tinyMCE has rendered many previous plugins dead in the water. It means that users need to do some serious spring cleaning and get rid of any plugins that have not been specifically updated for use with WP 3.9.

A lot of plugins have necessarily cropped up over time to add back lost functionality in tinyMCE as functions were removed. So the bbPress plugin I was using in the past that added back the visual tab to the forum message field was just one of many. Luckily I did disable it prior to the release of 3.9 but it clearly was already unstable with 3.8.

I made a mistake when I posted earlier, enabling the tools in the dashboard does give them to everyone who is not registered or logged in, not just those logged in as moderators. So I have rethought having the text editor tools on the open forum. I don’t like the ability of non-registered posters to add images directly nor do I like them adding links. These people don’t register so I have removed all editing tools from the forum in forum>settings. I have asked moderators to use the tools in the dashboard for adding images and links. Perhaps there will be a plugin in the future that will allow moderators with administrator rights to have these tools directly in the forum, but not have them accessible to the general public?

So if you do want your moderators to have undo, redo, add link, remove link and insert/edit image in the forum then enable this in forum>settings, it standard with tinyMCE 4, and looks exactly as it does on this forum

I became interested in more functionality and I installed TinyMCE Advanced plugin this afternoon to play with. I realized the many things I could do just with tables! So it’s a versatile plugin and they claim has been tested with 3.9.

I looked at this when you first posted and you were working on it so I came back to it before I went to bed and it was all working correctly – now it’s not, of course. – Right at that time my server was using old hosting and my name server was not updated thts y at that time it was showing correctly, after some time it was updated and got the issue.

There is something that is causing your css and js directory paths to be incorrect. Your files are there but it’s getting confused about where “there” is. – Right, Need to check, or i ll ask to my hosting service provider to check with firewall.

I know it’s frustrating (I’d be frustrated at any rate) but maybe go back and disable all plugins and then make sure you’ve cleared your browser’s cache completely using eg Chrome->Tools->Clear browsing data to test.- Did same thing but no luck.

Well the problem isnt that i cant install it. Actually i had installed both plugins but i dont want to rewrite the plugin code because when the plugins will be updated my code will be overwrited thats why i want a child-theme but i dont know which parts from the plugin in which folder.

    1. Thank you
    2. The Problem is the basic URL is http://www.myurl.de/forums/forum/test and when i disable the thickbox its http://www.myurl.de/forum/test. But i want zero tags before. And when i delete the forum field and save than it appears again.

WP just updated to 3.8.3 (without my input…) so would that have some version of tinyMCE in it?

No, it is the same TinyMCE version that shipped with WordPress 3.8, the new TinyMCE v4 is included in WordPress 3.9 and should be available within the next 24 hours.

This topic can indeed stay open and if you could post an update after you have updated to WordPress 3.9 that would be helpful.

I have updated my wordpress to the newer version, wordpress version: 3.8.3, bbpress version: 2.5.3.

I have a problem with “edit” on the front-end, if i want to edit a post then the page says: “The page you requested could not be found.”….

What can be done to prevent this problem? or to fix the problem?

the permalinks on my website are: /%postname%/%category%/

the url to edit the post is: http://…../…./…./…./post01/edit/

    thanks for the answer.

Update. Last week as soon as I read that there had been trouble with tinyMCE, I disabled the bbPress Enable TinyMCE Visual Tab Version 1.0.1 plugin I had been using. I was using it mainly so moderators could do a bit more in the forum but it wasn’t critical.

The results were that, -perhaps-, this was part of the problem but it’s not that straightforward. The moderator tried to post using her iPhone and responded:

“I could put my name in and e-mail address AND it did show up as I typed. But, when I posted, the typing was transparent. I knew it was ‘typing’ because the auto word finish worked and came up. And then when I hit ‘submit’ the post did show up.”

So then I needed to know if she had tried this while she was logged in or not. I have the forum set for no registration so anyone can post, but I don’t allow them to input html. If she was not logged in then she wouldn’t be able to post in html. I thought perhaps her iPhone or iPad has text attributes set that wouldn’t be allowed.

    So I quizzed her:
    > So the keyboard came up for you this time, no problem? That was the important thing.
    Yes, it came up.
    >
    > So then next, you could see what you were typing in the name and email fields?
    Yes.
    >
    > But then when you were typing in the message window, the text was not visible?
    Right, NOT visible.
    >
    > And finally when you hit submit you could see that you had posted.
Yes, it was then visible and posted.
    >
    > I can see what you posted and besides the fumbled spelling cause you couldn’t see, it works.
Right – my fingers on the tiny keyboard are not conducive to proper spelling, punctuation. 😜
    >
    > So I need to know, first are you logged in when you are adding your message?
    No, I’m NOT logged in.

    > Do you see a message that says “Your account has the ability to post unrestricted HTML content.”
    No, i don’t see that.
    >
    > And then when you are at the message window, look at the tabs on the upper right. Were you on the visual tab or the text tab when you were writing?
    Visual, couldn’t get into Text.
    >
    > Try typing another message with the other tab selected. I suspect you were in the visual tab so try the text tab this time.
    Doesn’t work. 😣

Then a few days later we were back at it again. She tried this logged in.
“Logged in. Using iPad. This is what I got from ‘Text’

Hi. This is a test – now is the time for all AIHA/IMHA doggies to be well.

    <strong>bold</strong>

    <em>italics</em>

And this is what I got in ‘Visual’

    Hi. This is a test.

Now is the time for all AIHA/IMHA doggies to be well.

    Bold: </strong>

    Italic: <em>

Then later that day she tried logging out and posting:
“I logged out and tried to post again to my Sadie:Weaning post. I seemed to have lost a word or two from the post, once I hit submit, but it WAS in sequence and I COULD type AND the typed showed as I typed. This was the first time in months that it’s worked. Yeah!!!!!”

And yesterday she reported (logged out):
“Okay – just posted to Joe. First, had to tap hard to get the keyboard to come up. It finally did and I could put in name, e-mail, showing what I wrote. But once I tried to actually post, again, after tapping hard anonymity (“on it?”)five times, the cursor would move with each letter I hit, but I could not see shat (see what?) I was writing.”

WP just updated to 3.8.3 (without my input…) so would that have some version of tinyMCE in it? I thought that they had removed it completely a while back and at that time I lost the text tab in the forum when posting as a moderator. So that is when I installed the tinyMCE plugin.

I wish I could say that this seems resolved, but it seems that she is still having erratic behavior from the keyboard when she is trying to enter text either logged in or not logged in. It is significant that she can get the keyboard to come up at all, that was not happening before.

I am trying to make sure my site is responsive and is usable by most phones and tablets. On my Google Nexus I have a bit of trouble scrolling down the page, it’s erratic and resistive. But that may have more to do with the page loading slower over wifi.

I hope this thread stays open so there can be further input?
    thank you, matoca

There was a change to handle reply slug titles in bbPress 2.5

    http://elitegamingcomputers.com/reply/operation-auctus-10/

    http://elitegamingcomputers.com/reply/12078/

    http://elitegamingcomputers.com/reply/operation-auctus-12/

    http://elitegamingcomputers.com/reply/12095/

The above is what the updated slugs should be though as those replies were created before the 2.5 update they a) don’t work though that is what format your new slugs would use.

Looking at a recent topic http://elitegamingcomputers.com/topic/hello-everyone-3/ your reply to that topic is and works fine: http://elitegamingcomputers.com/reply/17556/

Thus this will only affect your pre bbPress 2.5 replies and there are probably a couple of options available if you wanted to retrospectively apply this to your pre 2.5 replies either with a custom PHP repair tool or directly in phpMyAdmin to grab each reply and copy it’s post ID to the post_name field in the wp_posts table.

EDIT: If you want to see the code and ticket background on this change see this and this

    103	        'wp_embed_handler_youku' );

So as you should be able to have this in WordPress posts and pages etc that ‘should’ flow on down to bbPress to allow you to use youku 🙂

BBPress is integrated with Buddypress, and it creates the forum, and shows the forum perfectly. Including ‘Last updated by *user name* 13 hours ago. BUT once you actually enter the topic, it shows the topic creator’s postbit(avatar/role/time posted) fine, meanwhile showing all replies as ‘participant’ or ‘anonymous’ with no information shown. It shows their reply, but there’s no way of seeing who it is that replied.

@a42 I have decided to move to a different type of forum as I have realised by reading past threads that questions and issues raised are not well addressed, and in some cases not answered at all. I assume bbPress needs to updated to be compatible to the new version of WordPress.

    @vinaunder
It is going blank due to the plugin causing issues with the new version of WordPress. Go to your FTP manager, and save the plugin on your computer and then delete the plugin on ther server. You will be able to login into the dashboard. That was my issue in any case…

Thanks, John. I’d like for the page to show two buttons before visitors register or log in. The first button is a post button. The second button would give visitors the option of being updated about new posts and edits by email. These two buttons would direct visitors, who aren’t logged in, to a register or log in screen. Is this possible to do without creating new code?

@maecana I just updated the original post on what works and what doesn’t.

Categories adds another layer to the importer in general and it just doesn’t support this just yet, I hope to in the future though.

‘Typically’ most forums don’t have to many categories so recreating these categories in bbPress manually and then moving the forums under these categories works quite well.

    #144523

This started dues to an issue when importing from phpBB. If a user had depeted their own account on a phpBB forum, phpBB didn’t reattribute the post author to a different author, rather just removed the account from being able to login etc. phpBB stores the author name alongside each topic and reply so once said author has been deleted you have the option to also not delete the users topics or replies and when viewing said topic the original author’s name will still be attributed to the topic or reply.

The goal was then to bbPress support this as when you import from a phpBB if the user doesn’t exist then we wouldn’t create a new user and as seen above if the user doesn’t exist then each topic and reply is attributed to the ‘Anonymous’ user.

Over in bbPress Trac Ticket #2347 we came up with a solution.

If you take a look at the patch I currently have sitting there (Keep in mind the current ‘Example.php’ customised importer you are using)

    https://bbpress.trac.wordpress.org/attachment/ticket/2347/2347.diff

The first part in the phpBB.php section I added parts to import the topics user name, the replies username and then added a flag on the user that was being imported _bbp_phpbb_user_type. That gets enough of the data that we need into the WordPress database to enable us to manipulate that once the data has been imported.

So at the moment if your Lotus DB has these details already attached to the topics and replies then adding this to your custom import would be the first step.

Firstly in regards to Anonymous users in bbPress, an anonymous user CAN have a username and/or display and this is stored in wp_postmeta table as _bbp_anonymous_name and is what my comments in my previous reply were alluding to.

Next up I added a new Repair Tool to basically post process this imported data, I create a query that joins all the topics data from wp_posts and wp_postmeta along with the topics old phpBB stored username. Once all that is in a SQL result table each topic that is by an ‘anonymous’ author is then updated to change the _bbp_anonymous_name associated with that particular topics store phpBB topic author name. Then the same process is repeated for each reply.

So now we have deleted, closed, spammed users that were deleted or deactivated in some way form the legacy phpBB forum but the topics and replies were never deleted to keep the context of the original discussions.

These are now all anonymous users in WordPress/bbPress but actually have the original display name/ user name keeping that same original context.

So that is my theory I was getting to, make each of your imported Lotus users an anonymous user using their old original user/display name to keep that context of conversation.

Now this is why you don’t need to worry about email addresses nor passwords as the accounts are not actual accounts just placeholders of the names from the original discussion.

The next part of the puzzle is when your users now sign up to reactivate and participate in the new bbPress they are free to create there account, choose their username, customise their profile, pick a password, use any email address they choose etc etc.

And the final part is now ‘Joe Blogs’ has created a new account on your site we just need a tool that will reattribute the posts currently under the anonymous user account ‘Joe Blogs’ to the now active user ‘Joe Blogs’ and the job is done. You can currently do just that with the standard WordPress User administration to delete a user and then reattribute that users posts to another user during the delete process. We just go and tweak that process to also allow/mimic/recreate that process to be able to reattribute the anonymous ‘Joe Blogs’ topics and replies to now active user ‘Joe Blogs’.

So how’s all that sound? Clear as mud?

I wrote another ‘post import’ repair tool yesterday that I had planned on integrating with the above tool today but time got away from me so hopefully I’ll have time in the morning to do this and will keep the scenario I outlined above in mind so it can be used for more than just imported phpBB forums and can be extended for other imported forums and custom imports.

I seem to have issue with front end site refresh/caching? every time I updated the forum, new forum/topic/reply or even installed new plugin etc. It doesn’t seem to refresh the front end site immediately. I have to manually refresh the page in order to see the updated changes. Is this an issue on my bbPress site? settings or hosting server? Thanks anyone.

This primarily fixes forum subscriptions to be compatible with bbPress v2.5.3 and v2.6alpha

    * Removes ie.css that was a theme CSS file and not a bbPress CSS file
    * Updated CSS including RTL and minified versions
    * Adds user profile forums subscription management
    * Updated bbpress-functions.php to be compatable with bbPress v2.5.3 and v2.6alpha

I have tested this with bbPress v2.5.3 and v2.6alpha and the Twenty Thirteen and Twenty Fourteen themes.

Note: In the CSS I have added the responsive CSS changes via bbPress #1933 but I have kept the ‘epicwebs’ CSS after these changes so they will override any of the media queries that were introduced. This will need to be tested and tweaked so that eventually the CSS’ media queries are the last section of CSS.

You can see the ‘Pull Request’ I have submitted for @Lynq here:
    https://github.com/EpicWebs/bbPress-starter-theme-epicwebs/pull/5

Once he has had a chance to review it and merge it things will be good to go.

If you know your way around GitHub you can download that pull request and test it out.
(In other words I’m not going to be giving GitHub tutorials today 😉 )

    Hi,

I have WordPress 3.8.1 and BBPress 2.5.3. I am also using WP Members version 2.9.1. BBPress new topic notifications were working, up until about 2 weeks ago (all other system notifications are still working fine). The only recent plug-in update has been to WP Members, so there may be an issue with compatibility – but I can’t be sure that the problem didn’t in fact start before I updated WP Members.

I would really appreciate your advice, many thanks.

So I’m having a few issues here trying to customize stuff – specifically the font sizes through out the bbPress pages.

I’ve been using EM as a standard and it’s always worked well. I’ll give you a very specific example.

I’m trying to change .bbp-topic-permalink font size, but every time I get it the right size it’s bigger or smaller on another page. So the permalink on one forum subject will be small – I’ll increase it to the desired size and then on another forum it’s huge….not seeing how this happens but it’s happening to a lot of items and it’s horridly frustrating.
