  • First and foremost, I am very new to bbPress and fairly inexperienced at PHP. If the solution to my problem is simple, I apologize in advance.

I would like for the homepage to display full-text recent topics, but not all recent topics–only ones that I want there. I think I would like only topics with a specific tag to display on the homepage. Is that possible?

If not, I would be okay creating a single forum dedicated for this purpose, so that every topic created within that forum gets displayed on the homepage. If that is a simpler option, I would like to know how to implement it.

    Thank you greatly.

I am using WordPress 3.4.1, bbPress 2.1.2, and BuddyPress 1.6.1.

    Hello guys,

I’m new to wordpress and bbpress and started to learning it today. I recently installed wp which succeeded and added bbpress through the plugin tab on the admin page. I installed WP on my root page so how do i access my forums via typing in the linkbar in any browser?

I’ve browsed for a solution before i decided to make a topic and I’m very lost. Also the bbpress forums http://bbpress.org/forums/, how would I organize mine with the forum category on the left side and latest topics in the middle?

    Thanks very much in advance.

i have yet to test this, but it appears that the answer to my question above is ‘yes’…. with the plugin bbPress Topics for Posts by David Dean:

    very cool!

is there a way to transfer a standard wp blog to this? … iow, turn previous blog comments and comments threads into replies and a topic thread?

I’ve at least found a work around although I don’t understand the cause.

s2member has an option of “Alternative View Protection”. When I work with this option, the original post displays. I definitely don’t understand the relationship between s2m and bbpress on this (why this option hides the original post), but I’m glad the original posts are showing!
    Do share any thoughts!

I’ve seen numerous threads on this very subject for the last few years and JJJ has been posting the same response every time. It more or less says “This is the way it is. If you don’t like it, come up with your own solution.”

I understand his reasoning for saying that’s just the way it is, but IMO, I wouldn’t have released this product with the URLs in this format. How can a topic be considered part of a forum, yet the URL not represent that?

This is the logical structure. (assuming everything exists in a forums subdirectory):

    Viewing a Single Forum:

    domain.com/forums/forum-name/

    Viewing a Thread (or topic):

    domain.com/forums/forum-name/thread-name

With comments being this or something similar:

    domain.com/forums/forum-name/thread-name#comment-35

    .

This is what we actually get.

    Viewing a Single Forum:

    domain.com/forums/forum/forum-name

Then click on a Single Thread:

    domain.com/forums/topic/thread-name

You lose all acknowledgement that you were in a particular forum. It’s like the threads are just floating about aimlessly…not attached to anything in particular.

If BBPress operated like WordPress, Let’s say that “Forums” are “Categories” and “Topics” are “Posts”. Well, with WordPress, you can set your permalinks to read:

    domain.com/category-name/post-name/

So why not be able to do that with BBPress? The problem is that in order to get all of the various settings applied to both Forums and Topics, they have both been created as separate Custom Post Types. The individual Posts in Topics simply have a custom field that ties them to a specific Forum.

Now, I haven’t tested this at all, but in theory it may be possible to tap into some WordPress action and filter hooks and create our own rewrite rules to fix what I see as the biggest flaw with BBPress. I found a thread on another site recently where the user used a custom field value to generate the permalink for a custom post type. That seems to me would be exactly what we need to do here. If I can get some free time, I’ll see if I can get it working and maybe build a plugin to handle it.

    Hi,
We are having this same problem and I need your help!

wp 3.4.1, bbpress 2.1.2, Elegant Themes

When I’m logged in as admin, I can see all topics and all replies in the forum.

When I’m logged into the website (front-end) as a user of the website, I can ONLY see the second and on replies – the original entry/post is missing.

We have s2member, but this problem used to NOT exist, and there haven’t been any updates to s2member. I think the only thing I’ve done is update bbpress from 2.? to 2.1.1. I updated 2.1.1 to 2.1.2 today to see if it’d help and it didn’t. I hate that I can’t be more specific.

But basically, it seems to be when I’m logged in as a user of the website, I can only see replies and not the original post.
I’d greatly appreciate any help, I’m quit unsure what to try next!

Hi I am using wp 3.4.1 and using bbpress plugin for the forum. However I am trying to install a new theme but dunno how to start. I have already downloaded a new theme [derleth-bright] , just need a little bit of nudge on my head how to implement this.

And also as I am using the wordpress plugin for the bbpress forum , can someone tell me how to make it full-width page. Its by default coming as a post which includes also the author name, creation time etc. which I also dont want.

    Can someone help me?

I’m not fingering that particular Dev4Press script, mind. For one thing, it doesn’t directly manipulate content other than to copy selected text for quoting purposes.

I’m just suggesting this might be an issue with a plugin, or with the interaction of two or more plugins — and you do have a few active. 😉

I can’t replicate the behaviour using WP 3.4.1 and BBPress 2.1.2 with a TwentyTen child theme, but then I don’t run any of the plugins you do.

Thanks 🙂 I look forward to hearing the results. If it doesn’t work for any reason, just let me know and I’ll look into it for you. In principle it should work, but I’ve done very little testing so it’s possible I’ve missed something on the bbPress implementation.

Viewing your page source shows the first paragraph in each reply is missing the opening <p> tag.

An embedded javascript on your page is performing a regular expression replacement of some elements, including paragraphs; the term ‘gdbbPressTools’ in the script suggests this may be part of a Dev4Press plugin.

    Ring any bells?

I’m sure I did something stupid, but after installing bbpress, I only see Forum in Settings. From the documentation, I would be seeing more than just that I think.

If you have your theme take control of the bbpress templates using the theme-compatibility settings you can change the header names in the various loops, specifically loop-forums.php and loop-single-forum.php

    Hello,

I am a total bbPress / php newb, apologies.

    WP v 3.4.1 bbPress v 2.1.2

I am trying to tweak the forum to look more like a repository for educational lesson plans, curriculum, etc. and so would like to change the wording from Forum, for example, to “Content Areas” and so on… any thoughts on how best to do this?

    THANKS,

Using WordPress 3.4.1, bbPress 2.1.2, TwentyEleven 1.4 (unmodified theme).

Widgets are correctly placed on non-bbPress forum pages (See screenshot)

But on any bbPress forum page, the widgets appear below the forum content (See screenshot)

What’s wrong? How can I fix this?

I am looking for a way to allow users to upload profile pictures on their bbPress profiles. Currently, even as admin, I see no option to upload an image to display my profile. I thought that uploading a user profile image would be a feature that is built in to bbPress, or that a standard bbPress plugin could be found to enable this functionality, but have not been able to find such a plugin.

Any guidance would be MUCH appreciated, and I thank you, the amazing bbPress community, in advance for your care and direction.

Yep, never found the solution. I deleted the plugin. I posted the problem on the developer’s website through their support portal and got no response. Great service, they have.

We are currently working on integrating the cubepoints into our forums to help show community influence.

If you’re looking for something like cubepoints, this link might help you: http://cubepoints.com/forums/topic/module-bbpress-2-0/

    Best.

    I would disagree.
there are certain features of old / traditional forums that users like or need
for example, one omission in current bbpress is “number of views”

it does influence and show how popular certain topics are.

we have a large forum, where categories are necessity,.. because in category has 10 or more ‘forums’
and if they were laid out like traditional forums, it would make it easier for the members to see the whole structure of the forums.. as it is, I had to manually create a table with all the categories/ forums

(having said that, we are still using buddy press forums.. and hoping to migrate to bbpress as soon as the converter becomes available..

    Hi,

It seems that bbpress is not recalculating reply positions after you move them to trash, which causes wrong reply urls.

For example, if you delete a reply somewhere in the beginning of a topic, url of every last reply in a topic page leads to the next one and url of the most recent reply in a topic can lead to a page that doesn’t exist at all.

In addition, it would be very nice to have a tool for recalculating reply positions.

    @Andre
Tried to deactivate all plugins, then tried to switch for buddypress default theme and the result is the same. No forums updates at activity stream.

By the way, are you using group forums or site wideforums, or eventually both enabled but using only one of them?

I have the bbpress forum on my website, all up to date and working well.

However, the first paragraph on every thread, reply has a smaller default text than the rest of the thread/reply.

Please can you help me correct this.
