Well, I’d like to install this in a directory rather than a subdomain. The installation says I need to upload the files to my server but where do I upload them to on the server? It says that once I do, I should enter the URL of the intended space and the installation should proceed.
Being a self-hosted WordPress site, I created a new page and that’s in it’s own directory, so where would i go from here to upload the files to that particular directory?
Okay I’m pretty sure there are some fundamental misunderstandings I seem to have developed. I’m very new to hosting my own website so please be a little patient.
Let’s say I have a WordPress site. I don’t want it to be http://www.example.com/wordpress/ – maybe I want it at http://www.example.com or maybe http://www.example.com/blog/. Making WordPress the root of your site is easy, and I think you’ve already done that.
To mask bbpress, just rename the folder to something other than the default when it’s unzipped of bbpress. Call it ‘forums’ or ‘discussions’. If you rename the bbpress folder before you start, you don’t need to change anything later. If you’ve already installed it, then there are a couple config hoops to jump through to move it.
You could also do a subdomain installation, like forums.example.com and not even show that it’s in a subdirectory at all. Then just map that subdomain to the directory where you’ve installed bbPress on the server. No need for directories at all in the URI/URL.
Masking is pretty silly, since one look at the source (if you even need to go that far, for WordPress and bbPress) will give away the secret (wp- and bb- anyone?) If you’re just trying to remain application-neutral, then I agree that this is worth doing (i.e. let’s say you want to use punBB or something later. If you used /forums for your bbPress installation, you can retain /forums and just install punBB in there.)
QuickD – what version of bbPress are you using, and are you integrated with WordPress?
I used smi1ey method worked nice, thanks for explanation buddy
What plugin are you talking about and is it a WordPress or bbPress plugin? Are you integrated with WordPress or WPMU? Maybe you are using an incompatible or unnecessary plugin.
> I’m sorry mate but deep integration doesn’t slow anything down.
I think there would be many here who disagree with you. What sort of empirical evidence do you have that it does NOT slow anything down? Loading all of WordPress has to take some amount of time.
https://bbpress.org/documentation/integration-with-wordpress/#func
Doing this will add quite a lot of weight to your bbPress installation as it will cause WordPress to load in it’s entirety. Your best option is to try to emulate the functionality you require inside a bbPress plugin.
Tony did this the right way to get the functionality he needed.
Hi,
I’m an old school computer person and feel it is very sloppy to display application subdirectories on your host site.
I’ve succesfully masked the URI of my WordPress 2.2 site to remove the ./wordpress/ subdirectory. I would like to be able to do the same thing with bbPress.
Is there a way to mask the bbpress subdirectory?
Thanks,
Amy
Hi,
I’m looking for a way to prevent direct access to the bbPress system from the outside. I have some user communities and I would like to have the users sign onto the WordPress site, then access the BBS only from there. This way, the users would be forced to undergo SSL authentication and then access the BBS as a new window from a Page entry at the top of the site. (PS. I’m trying to do the same thing with phpFreeChat as well.)
Once they are logged on, they don’t need to keep their WP session alive (at least for now).
Is this something that is possible?
Thanks,
Amy
I agree. Deep Integration is the way to go. See my site: http://wpmu.zyrot.com/forums/

Hi smf, I tested Simple forums (I also tested Joomla with Kunena and ccborad, and phbb, and Vanilla).
In the end, I am settling for bbPress for forums because I need single-user sign on with my content system, and I settled on wordpress for that (Joomla was too slow and I wanted a very fast, responsive site).
So if you need forum integration with something, you have more factors to consider than just the forum software itself.
Simple Forums does provide single-user signon with WordPress, but it’s UGLY and there are no good-looking themes. That said, simpleForums is a highly functional forum system and seamless integration with both user and menu-system.
Just found this thread, and wanted to say I am using WP 2.8x and bbPress 1.01 succesfully together now; user integration is just what I wanted. Only catch remains the style (user interface) integration, which I’m hoping to sort out eventually (hard when I don’t know CSS at all).
You got the integration plugin installed? It specifically fixes cookies both ways.
Hey.
I was clearing my test forums on my bbPress install, I deleted all forums and when I try to load my forums I get this message;
Oh dear!
Please complete your installation before attempting to include WordPress within bbPress
bbPress is already installed.
Perhaps you meant to run the upgrade script instead?
What on earth has gone wrong? All I have done is deleted forums?
Thanks.
Hi all,
I followed all directions I have been able to find on the web but I still have a problem: logging in to bbPress logs me out of WordPress and vice versa. All settings and config files look ok.
The site is at http://www.stereostokey.com, and the forums are at http://www.stereostokey.com/forums
Any ideas? Could it have to do with the theme modifications I have made?
Cheers,
Tom

I have written a function I call bb_list_pages() and I’ve added it & some support code to a functions.php file in my bbPress theme’s folder. This does NOT work using the WordPress wp_list_pages() logic. Rather, it attempts to output the same results as that function. There are things that wp_list_pages() does that this function can’t do, but it works for my site. If folks are interested, I’ll post the functions.php file after I finish getting it debugged.
I just have one question. How can I determine what the current page’s URI is? I need this to highlight the page on the menu.
Thanks
Tony
Did you install WordPress and bbPress in the same directory? You shouldn’t have any problem like this just from installing or integrating bbPress.
Has anything changed with with the steps for setting up Pretty Permalinks on bbPress 1.0.1?
I have tried the methods in the FAQ, without success, on two different webhosts (Media Temple & Bluehost).
Adding a .htaccess file with “Options +MultiViews” results in an error message when I try to load any page in the forum. When I try to visit “/bb-admin/rewrite-rules.php”, it redirects to the permalink settings page, and I do not see any code being generated that I could add to my .htaccess file instead.
I have bbPress installed in a subdirectory with WordPress in the root directory. I have Pretty Permalinks functioning just fine in WordPress.
Have I missed anything obvious here?
I have used PHPBB and that is a pretty robust service. But I liked having something integrated. BBPress works okay for now.
I am looking for a plugin that will allow someone to share posts on my forum via social networking sites. WordPress has tons of them. Anyone found one for BBPress yet?
I am using bbpress 1.0 and wordpress 2.8.2. After the bbpress installation, I went back into wordpress and came to the site where all the pages were missing showing “Not Found. Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn’t here.”
When I try to login in to the site admin, “You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.”
I can login to bbpress, but not to wordpress. Any ideas? I went into the mysql and data is still there.
Hi,
I’m running a heavy metal forum, which has band sections, event sections etc. I would love to know if there is a way to link certain words with their destined pages.
e.g.:
I have a band page about “Linkin Park” on page x. So whenever someone mentions Linkin park, it should be auto-linked to page x.
Is this doable? And how? Any ideas?
Here you have a similar for WordPress-plugin for that:

Thank you/
OK, I’m working on integrating my WordPress & bbPress themes. I’m doing the work in the bbPress theme files.
What I did was I copied the style.css from my WordPress theme into the new bbPress theme directory. Now I’m working on the header.php file, figuring the best place to start would be at the top of every page.
The navigation bar from my WordPress theme uses a javascript file which is included in the scripts/ folder under the directory where the theme lives.
I’m calling bb_get_active_theme_directory() to get the directory name, but this is not returning anything. The Appearance page in the admin console for bbPress is using the theme I’m editing, and viewing the page source shows the wrong value for the script file name.
A couple of lines earlier in the header.php file, it calls bb_stylesheet_uri() & that returns the full URI of the stylesheet. I want everything that’s in there minus the “style.css”. How do I get it?
Tony
Thanks. I’ve been reading a little about deep integration & I’m not sure I want the overhead. This is a new site with only about 45 pages or so of static content, to date, and the amount of content will grow over time. Getting bbPress to load WordPress, too, sounds like it will slow everything down, especially as content grows.
As the pages are all contained in the database, and bbPress is already storing its data in the same database as WordPress, I was just looking for a function that would work like wp_list_pages() only using bbPress variables.
I guess I’m going to have to go spelunking through the WordPress & bbPress code.
Tony
