Using Gravity Forms and bbPress, I am attempting to create a new topic, within a specific forum, upon form submission.

I have tried to incorporate the Gravity Forms Custom Post Type add-on to accomplish this, but, presumably due to the non-heirarchial structure of bbPress forums, I only seem able to either:

A) Create a new FORUM with the submitted data
or
B) Create a new TOPIC that goes unassigned to any forum

So, basically, unless a topic can be created as a child of a forum, I’m not sure there’s a way to get this working with that add-on.

Is there any way I can force the topic to be created within a specified forum using php? Any other thoughts or alternatives? Maybe a workaround that forces all topics created via Gravity Forms submission to default to a specified forum?

For what it’s worth, I am using Gravity Forms for users to submit event proposals. My idea is to then have the submission data routed into a forum like bbPress where the powers that be may vote on and discuss each proposal.

I have a couple of questions related to the default emails that get sent when people post to forums, follow topics, etc.

1. These emails show up as being sent from our admin email address, with the name Avaiya Media. I’d like to edit the name and the email address sending the emails. Do you know how I can do that?

2. These emails send a notification to the person who subscribed to that forum post, but they also
automatically send an email to noreply@avaiya.com. This is bouncing. How can I remove this email address when these emails are sent?

sorry but this is getting beyond free help. bbpress just uses wordpress registration, so this is not really a bbpress issue, rather a wordpress one.

I’d like to have a notifications “bell” on the upper right menu bar of our membership site,
such that people see the # of notifications they have. These would be notifications from bbPress like when someone comments on a forum they are subscribed to, etc. These are the same notifications they will receive via email as well.

I’d also like it to integrate with BuddyPress and for it to show notifications from BuddyPress like when they get a friend request, a private message, etc.

Thoughts on how to do this?

bbPress is using standard WordPress functions for user registration, so this is not strictly bbPress related. In most of the cases it’s because of a security plugin or something in your theme. So the above steps from @robin-w should help you troubleshoot.

It seems I could not link properly to the images.

Let I describe the issue.

I have checked SMTP and WordPress email address.
Although both are GMAIL addresses, the WP SMTP plugin accepts it.
That’s why, I guess, I could send the test mail from the contact form.
I confirmed, these test emails from contact form are coming via the domain which I have created for SMTP plugin.
After registration of dummy account, I receive the message stating verification mail send.
However, no such registration/activation mail gets received for dummy account.
After registration I receive message stating verification mail send.
The dummy account gets listed on the WordPress backend user list.
The check email plugin sends the test mail to the Gmail address in general settings of the WordPress.
However, it fails to send the test mail to another Gmail address.
Kindly suggest.

If you want that functionality you will need to modify the plugin I linked to, you could set it so that it is only enabled on specific forums, or specific topics, that’s up to you.

It is not a bug in bbPress, it is by design, just as you can install plugins for WordPress, in this case, bbPress, you can install and customise bbPress by further installing bbPress plugins, it allows for the flexibility of each user to customise bbPress to their personal needs without imposing on others who do not want that functionality.

your smtp service will be expecting the correct email address

what is set is

dashboard>settings>general>email address

and does it match your smtp?

1. You should be aware that many spam filters strip messages that do not come from the correct address. So if your site is mysite.com and your email address in wordpress settings>general is fred@gmail.comthen it is likely that messages will be dumped in transit. You need to set up email to come from your site eg fred@mysite.com, your hosting provider can help if needed.
2. Just bbpress?
Then you need to see if this is wordpress wide or just bbpress.

It wasn’t until I started googling this that I notice it is a recurring issue with bbpress sites using smtp, and hasn’t got a definitive answer.

As far as I can see two things seem to help.

1. amending the from address
2. not sending bulk emails

this plugin seems to address these two issues

also there is a code snippet that lets you change the from address that smtp may well need -I don’t think it is needed as the plugin does this I hope (I haven’t tested the plugin), but quoted just in case 🙂

However, something causes that in the forum post notifications the “From” is set back to the default <noreply@domain.com>, although it is set to different/custom address by the WP Mail SMTP plugin. My web hosting service blocks the PHP mails sent from unknown addresses, so that’s the reason why the e-mails are not delivered.

I’ve noticed there is a plugin that might do this, but “It may no longer be maintained or supported and may have compatibility issues when used with more recent versions of WordPress.”

I thought I posted this to the forum yesterday, but then I couldn’t find it anywhere so I’m posting again.

I am launching a membership site in 2 weeks, and members who sign up for our membership will be “Participants” as their role. I would like to assign some members the role of “Moderator” as these people will have some admin responsibilities. How do I do this?

We are using BBpress and Buddypress on our site Myhealthletter
Since wordpress mails were not functioning, we have activated SMTP with the help of WP Mail SMTP by WPForms.
Now, contact us mails are delivered to us, however bbpress new registration or verification mails are not delivered. Although we get user names and mails of new users in the wordpress user list.

Please help us to sort this issue.

bbpress using a custom post type and relies heavily on wordpress to then put these into the posts and post meta table.

So you would need to completely rewrite the core of bbpress, so in practise the answer is that you can’t.

Hi Robin W. – just want to say that thank you so much for all the responses and help you give to this community. Super inspiring.

I ended up just uploading the theme and putting up a little dummy content.

The two areas of note I mention, on the front page, http://jockjams.com, you can see below the blog post that what the shortcode out put on my page isn’t styled.

However, if you dig around at http://jockjams.com/forums/ or go to http://jockjams.com/forums/topic/do-the-nets-suck/, these look ok.

Another place where there is an issue is if you go to some of the lists on the profile page:

That is a good example. The list is THERE, you can see it when you inspect the page. Somehow the styling (or lack of) just pushed it way off to the side.

Both of these looked right in twenty fifteen, and I know for sure the shortcode worked on bbPress 2.5.14 from wordpress plugin repository, but not on bbPress 2.6 Release Candidate 5 that I downloaded from this form.

I guess those are all of the details. I would love to know why the styling worked on twenty fifteen, yet it doesn’t work on my theme, while the other two examples above are styled correctly along with my theme and are being properly targetted by bbpress css as well for the list styling.

Thoughts?

I’d still prefer to see the database schema, not data that’s already been parsed.

From what I can see you’ve got various issues with that WXR data:

• <wp:post_type><![CDATA[topic]]></wp:post_type> <- topic shouldn’t be wrapped in ![CDATA[ / ]], I’m not sure if that or any other instances apart from content will be affected by this.

• _wp_page_template shouldn’t be included, if the post_type was page, then yes, but topic post type shouldn’t have a _wp_page_template meta key, again, I’ve no idea what the resultant behaviour of this would be, maybe ok, maybe not.

• You have the following, which is correct: 1327 is the “forum ID”

• Closer to the top of your code you have <wp:post_parent>0</wp:post_parent>, this is where the post_parent should include that 1327 forum id.

I suspect if you can get 1327 into that last item above you’ll be all set, or at least progressed somewhat, I’m pretty sure the repair tools will be able to recalculate the topic meta once that is in, so that’s another option to repair any meta issues.

Also checkout https://bbpress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/2516, the file attached to that ticket is a pretty comprehensive WXR XML file of forum, topics, and replies layed out per the description in that ticket, it might be worth importing into a test site to help visualise the data when looking at the source of the XML file 🙂

Yes after installing bbpress your plugin works, but it is not quite doing what we want.

It has options to migrate all wordpress comments to bbpress but it does not open this migration under the individual posts.

we want the forum to replace the wordpress comment section, meaning the existing comments should be be replaced with bbpress forum under all the relevant post, so that next time the user wants to comment he has to comment using the bbpress box under the posts.

I hope you can arrange this facility in your plugin…then it will be just great!!
