Yah, chrishajer nailed it!

One of the weirdest adjustments for me using bbPress was figuring out the difference between posts and topics:

* A topic is what bbPress calls the entire thread/discussion.

* A post is what bbPress calls each individual piece of content in the topic – whether it be the first post creating the thread, or a comment on it.

So for example, a newly created thread would count as one topic and one post. If someone comments on it, then it becomes one topic with two posts.

If you ever want to calculate the number of comments per topic, you have to subtract out the first post from the number of posts. So for example, suppose a thread/topic had 12 posts. That actually means that it has one post that started it off, and 11 comments.

At least, that’s how I parse all of this! Good luck with the translations!

Here’s my take on it, but I’m no guru.

• A topic is a collection of posts.
• A post is a single entry related to a topic. A post is also referred to as a reply.
• A discussion is a topic (I believe the two are synonymous.)
• A thread on some boards is a topic on bbPress.
• A forum is a collection of topics related to a subject.
• A bbPress installation can be a group of forums.

I’ve started to translate bbPress into Swedish, using existing translations from previous versions (pre 0.9.0.3) and found that it is more difficult than expected to find exact translations for some very commonly used forum keywords.

The fact that I’ve been on the web since Mosaic 0.9 did – surprisingly not – make this easier…I’ve searched the web but couldn’t find any generic definitions of these words that tell the actual difference between i.e a post, a discussion and a thread. And what also surprises me is that not any translators (or regular forum members) seem to have asked this before.

I’d appreciate if you (bbPress) forum gurus could clearly define what is actually meant with each keyword above. I included the keyword “thread”, although it isn’t used in bbPress.

I realize that a the keywords represent a certain generic forum hierarchy but the definitions would really help me out to finish off the work I’ve started.

There’s a good overview of bbPress’ translation framework (with links to existing translations and to useful posts) on bbshowcase.org:

According to that, bbPress uses the same translation approach as WordPress:

The approach seems to be:

1) You download the POT file, which has all the English strings in it.

2) You translate the strings into your language (Greek) and save the file as a .po file

3) You optimize the .po file into a machine readable .mo file

Oh, I checked my webserver’s log and found that my rather obsolete German translation is still downloaded frequently. So I decided to rework it for the latest stable bbPress 0.9.0.4.

i found several mistakes and missing translations in that file.

To edit a .mo file you first need to have the .po version of it.

Then you can edit it with POEDIT

If you don’t have any of those things, first get POEDIT

If you only have a .mo file and not the .po but wish to add/edit the translations, you can “decompile” or reverse the .mo file into a .po file from the command line with poedit , ie.

START -> RUN

/program files/poedit/bin/msgunfmt ab_AB.mo > ab_AB.po

So I’ve been digging all through the forums here and I can’t seem to find anything that will work (most threads on the subject are years old)

Anyway, I got everything worked out properly and set the permission translation to give both Editors and Admins in WP Keymaster access.

This isn’t working for whatever reason. I am able to log into bbPress with the account created through WP and set to the proper rights, but it doesn’t give me keymaster access.

Any thoughts before I continue with the next reinstall?

Also note that you edit the es_ES.po file which then makes the new es_ES.mo file when you save the changed in poedit.

The program you need is poedit. http://www.poedit.net/

WordPress has pretty good instructions for doing it, and the process is similar with bbPress:

But now i have another question… how can i edit some words like: “Maestro de las llaves”… ? in the .mo file so i can change some translation words?.

What program should i use?

Poedit will automatically re-save the .mo file when you edit and save the .po file by default unless you’ve changed the default settings.

Bad news… the problem persist…

its the same…

In Ayudawordpress i have found just the .po file… but not the .mo…

so maybe i really have to edit the .mo file… how can i do that? with what program could i edit it ? because notepad or dreamweaver is not reading it good!

bruinfelix, your bbpress install looks very good and matches your wordpress side – I don’t understand why you don’t like the theme, it works well.

It would be nice if you released the .mo file – all the other bbPress installs that I can find in your country have “hard coded” their templates directly with the translations which is not good.

You’d be helping many other people and giving back to the community. I noticed you are using several of my plugins so it’s good to give back. The more people use bbPress, the more people will convert other WordPress themes.

I see that you completed this, did you want to share the nl-NL.mo file?

There are about two dozen other Dutch bbPress sites but it looks like they hard-coded their template translations which is a shame.

I’ve translated bbPress in to the Dutch language, no problem at all. I just found a old translation file, and edited a bit. So, evry thing just works just fine

Silly question but did you rebuild the .mo file?

The po/mo on the automattic svn is very outdated and is from 0.8

Try this version which has many more stings, even thought it’s for 1.0 it might work well on 0.9

Hi!

i am installing a bbpress forum for my website… Eveything is right but the translation to spanish its not running good. Some words are translated and some others no. I have modified the es_ES.po so to have all the english words translated to the spanish. But… some words are running and some others no… why could be that? What do i have to do so to fix it up? Do i have to touch all the theme file´s so to put each word directly to spanish or it is another way i am not seeing?… please HELP!
