I turned everything off and then started reactivating one at a time and checking. It was the ProfileGrid BBpress plugin making it so that we couldn’t add topics, so I just turned it off. Hopefully that solves it. Thank you SO MUCH for your help. I try to stick with very simple websites and this one has definitely wandered off that track. 🙂

ok no idea where that is and without a clear ‘click this, press that’ not really able to help on that aspect, and may well be an additional plugin which may be the cause.

so I’d suggest

As a test switch to a default theme such as twentytwenty, and see if this fixes.

If that doesn’t work, also deactivate all plugins apart from bbpress and see if this fixes. if it does, re-enable one at a time to see which is causing the error.

If you cannot do this to your site (say because it is live) then use the ‘troubleshooting’ features of this plugin to let you test without affecting other users

I’m experiencing some really odd behaviour when trying to change the slug for my Buddypress group directory (under which all my BBpress forums are housed) and redirect traffic.

My set-up is: BP 9.1.1; BBp 2.6.6, WP 5.8.1

Short explanation:

• traffic to a pre-change (/[old]/[groupname]) group url is being redirected to (/[new]/[groupname]/forum)
• This happens regardless of whether:
  • There is a specific redirect in place
  • There is a regex redirect in place (/[old]/(.*) to /[new]/$1/)
  • There is no redirect at all
• My redirect provider – Rank Math – can’t explain this.

I’ve not modified my hta, and the only other redirect rules in page on the site relate to post-login behaviour. It seems there’s something deep within Buddypress, BBpress or WordPress which is driving this, but I have no idea what.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this abd how to address it? I dare not make this change on my live site without resolving and having a clear idea what’s behind it.

I’d start by working out why emails are not arriving.

bbpress just uses the wordpress registration so start with

Hi,

I just installed BBpress and tried to register. The email does not arrive. It seems that this is a common problem. I looked at the competitor forum plug in support forum and same problem with that plug in.

A poster wrote that he solved the problem by having the registration without email. How do I set that up? I have the BBpress tweaks plug in.

Alternatively is there a way of sending the email through mailchimp or similar? I have a mailchimp account.

I recently had an attack on my forum where almost 14,000 posts were made in rapid succession, all with oriental characters. This wasn’t my main forum, but a secondary forum, so the contents isn’t super-important, although I’d like to preserve it if possible.

I’ve tried sending the offending topics to trash, but there are at this point 11,000 of them, and every time I try to delete even 100 using the Bulk actions, I get a Resource limit message with a 503 or 505 error. I can’t possibly delete the topics one at a time! I’ve tried sending the entire forum to trash, but I get the same thing.

In addition, I don’t understand how there could be topics started by Anonymous, when in my forum settings I have that ability UNchecked. After the attack, I upped the flood control settings to 90 seconds, and closed that forum, but I still don’t understand how they got in to do all that!

I’m on bbPress 2.6.6, WordPress 5.8.1, and the site is http://bluebirdnut.com/forums/. The forum where the bogus posts are located is the second one listed, Soup to Nuts forum.

Everything was working just fine, until over the weekend. Suddenly started getting an error saying “you do not have permission to start a new topic” for all users except admins. (Every member has participant role for forums)

Looked here and found a tip to remap my users, said that would fix the problem. Remapped users.

Message changed to “you cannot create new topics” for everyone except admin.

Where do I set the permission for all participants to be able to create new topics?

I have a wordpress account, which I use to try to log in. After that it takes me to a jetpack and wordpress site, which Makes me put in my info again. sorry, just re-read this properly, and you are falling between 2 stools. It is not a bbpress issue, bbpress uses translations to display the correct names in languages. That the other plugin developer has decided not to is not really a bbpress issue.

I’m guessing the answer is no, but I’m wondering if anyone knows of a plugin, etc, that would give users a notification on the website that they had a reply to one of their replies. This is a fairly common feature of internet forums. From what I can tell bbPress only has the posibility for email notifications. Personally I like email, but for the project I’m working on now, they aren’t a good communication method.

I’ve looked through the plugin repository and haven’t found anything. It seems like this is something more along the lines of BuddyPress, but I wanted to ask here before I go down that rabbit hole. I really don’t want any of the social aspects of BP, so if that was the only solution I would have to end up disabling most of the features (which would be fine if it got me what I needed).

As an aside, I wanted to acknowledge all the folks who are continuously active on this forum and work to support the project. I imagine there is lots of traffic from users like me who are trying to get things setup for their specific project and need to make lots of requests for features that just aren’t a part of the core plugin and likely never will be. But without the support of the core forum members, there would be little success with the plugin at all. So thank you!

I am using a plugin that displays my forum statistics, and after talking to the developer about a translation that is not showing as expected, he replied “My plugin get’s roles from bbPress, it has no influence on the translations for them, and if the bbPress function sends them without translation, there is not much I can do about it.”
Does anyone have any idea how bbpress can “send a function WITH translation”?

I’m going on the assumption that http requests for bbpress content returns a url with a path that has ‘forums’ in that position.

What are the ways that non-members can access content outside of that condition?

When I start forums, topics and reply, however, my email is being shown, not my username.

This doesn’t seem to be the case with other people who have registered and posted.

Is this typical and can this be changed so my username shows up?

How can I restrict all forum content to members only?
I know that this is an oft-discussed topic, but I have yet to find a satisfactory solution.

I want to have a website that has public content and a private forum.
All posts and pages will be private – except for all forum content.

‘bbPress Members Only’is a great and mature solution, but it bars access to all posts and pages except for a few defaults.

Many membership plugins exist, including free ones. I could use one of those, but they not designed for this specific purpose. As such they require configuration for this specific case. This could work, but there are risks to privacy when configuring and updating a general-purpose plugin.

I found a plugin (sorry, can’t remember the name) that does most of what I want, but it leaves topic archives exposed. I think the point of that was that it allows a forum to advertise its content. This is the opposite of what I want.

The approach that I’m about to experiment with will be a programmatic one:
In PHP I will parse the URL. If the URL contains the string ‘forums’, then I’ll redirect the request to a gatekeeping page.

In the meantime, if anyone can tell me about an approach or a plugin that I’ve missed, then please let me know.
