It’s live with quite a few plug-ins installed. Fully integrated with WordPress. Still some kinks to work out, but otherwise live and functional.
I started playing with WordPress on December 25th. ApocalypticTomorrow was born on the next day. On that same day, I discovered bbPress and it was then integrated with WP. At the mement it has the included default “blue” theme and not many plugins but as the days go by, I will be modifying it and adding plugins as well as changing the look and feel.
Check it out at http://apocalyptictomorrow.com/bbpress (feel free to join and be one of the first ones in the newly-made community!)
By the way, you can shameless self-promote your personal website at:

I think that site naviation really depends on how much traffic your forum has, how much you want it to have, and in what route you want your traffic to reach its destination.
The typical forum layout comes from catering to new visitors that want descriptions of each category, and from repeat visitors wanting to check if there are updates to that category without having to click into that category.
Tags don’t offer either of these options inherently.
If tags could visually signify if there are new posts for the visitor inside of them, maybe with emphasis or italics or reordering them to the front of the cloud, that would be a neat idea.
bbPress tends to take a different approach on forum/topic importance, by emphasising on the most recently replied to topics right on the front page. I consider this more of a feature of a slow moving bulletin board more than for a large one. I know some large technical forums that would show 20 different posts on every page refresh with this type of last reply based concept.
Tags are interesting because they are user editable and provide a wiki-esque style of topic organization. 99% of users will obey this, but it still requires a bit of moderation and attention. Using categories that users cannot edit allows for you to legitimately categorize your data, rather than have it free flowing any and everywhere. Also, how do you compensate for the “New Topic” screen where there is a category drop-down? If your authors aren’t familiar with the concept and meaning of your forums categories, yet they are forced to choose one, this will result in topics being put into the database almost at random, making it difficult for you to moderate them.
I see how this idea can be appealing, and I see how it could work in some instances, but I think this type of idea is more suitable for a WordPress type blog/CMS than for a forum.
I’m finishing my new forum (latest was made with SMF). I’m using bbPress 1.0 alpha 4 with the default theme (in blue and customized) and several plugins (a lot):
– Akismet
– Attachments
– Favourites notification
– Registration notification
– Temporal Ban
– bbcode buttons
– smileys buttons
– Related topics
– Signatures
– bbcode lite
– bbvideo
– post count plus
– support forum
– mass edit
– hidden forums
– active users
– bbpress karma
– terms of service
– human test
I’ve made the translation of bbPress 1.0 to spanish ( http://ayudawordpress.com/bbpress-espanol-alpha-104/ ) and the forum URL is …
htp://foro.ayudawordpress.com
I’m using the popular iNove theme for both bbPress and WordPress here…

What versions of bbPress and WordPress are installed?
did you check to see if your wordpress is integrated properly? (the secure auth keys, logged in keys, etc… in bb_config should match the ones in wp_config)
I’ve been installing a copy of bbpress for a new site launch for a few weeks now. Mostly it’s been going pretty smooth, but tonight I realized I’m not able to change any of my member profile settings as an admin.
My install is tied into WordPress, and I can change user settings from the admin panel there, but from bbpress I cannot edit any settings for any users but myself. It almost looks as if some required field isn’t being entered when I attempt to change anything. I get no error messages.
I’ve been wracking my brain for an hour on this and am totally stumped. I disabled all of my plugins but the problem persisted.
I need to be able to edit users! Halp!
@bryan
It appears to me like you didn’t integrate your user registrations or user accounts. I can login to the forums, but cannot login to WordPress. Can you check out your database and make sure you only have wp_user and wp_usermeta user tables, and do not have any that start with bb_?
So I’m reading this blog post, all about bbPress and WordPress and I realize something. You can link on the WP forums to their wiki.
3. Link to Codex article by using the wiki code of two beginning and ending brackets. Template Hierarchy will create a link to that article in Codex.
I have bbPress. I have a MediaWiki. How did they do that!? I’d like to implement that!
Hi all,
I recently installed the bbpress forum (http://www.holysh1t.net/forum) on the one month old gaming blog http://www.holysh1t.net. The integration with wordpress went nearly flawless, the speed is amazing even on shared hosting and I find many joy in all the plugins! I am definitely amazed at all the work _ck_ has put in to them… he seems to have created atleast half of all the plugins available… kudos
What this post is about is a request to have a custom field in registration, which could be edited in the profile and published as a seperate field in the user info, next to each post. I’ve been looking if such a plugin exists, but could not immediately find it!
Would be great if it could be a feature to be considered, or if someone could show how it could be done (if it’s not too much time of course).
Either way, I love bbpress! Thank you for this great piece of software!
Happy holidays,
Greetings,
Nico

@biscut
Delete ALL tables in the database that start with your bb_ prefix, and try again.
@bryan
I can assure you that following Sam’s video PERFECTLY yields perfect results. I’ve done it at least 10 times. Can you rewatch the video and take notes on what in your particular case may be different? Like directory location, server settings, unique WordPress plugins or setup, anything like that?
I joined your forum, but then realized that your WordPress login page isn’t the traditional wp-login.php. I get redirected when I try to access it. Also, same goes for your admin area. It looks like you’ve got WP logins pretty well hidden from view. Care to let me in?
Hey Sam, all the buzz about BuddyPress got me back on the forums here. Everyone seems to say “that’s a good idea for like, three years from now” when I suggest something. I’m either flattered to be thinking ahead or embarrassed to be so disconnected from present reality.
In any event, thanks for the great down-to-earth response to my pipe-dream post from 8 months ago!
It would appear that ease of integration has greatly improved since then!
I wonder if it’s because of the integration between themes or with WordPress functions conflicting with bbPress functions? These versions are not *supposed* to work when integrated; maybe this is one of the problems.
If you have access to the database, look at the bb_topics table for a field called topic_open which should be 1 for open or 0 for closed. I’m curious what the value is for the first topic.
I created a separate database for bbPress with separate users.
You somehow changed your wordpress settings to look at the users in the new, blank, bbpress install. Therefore noone can login. The wrong cookies aren’t helping.
You need to delete bbpress and change your wordpress wp-config.php to point back to the user table in the old wordpress database.
Did you try what Trent suggested?
Also, WordPress 2.7 does not integrate with bbPress 0.9.*
I’m using bbPress 0.9.0.2. Yes it is integrated with my WordPress 2.7 blog. No active plugins at the moment.
I wish it was mentioned in one of the steps of installation process. What can I do now to fix my WordPress?
None of the authors and administrators can login to their account. The admin area is completely inaccessible.
WordPress 2.6 does not integrate with 0.9.0.3.
https://bbpress.org/forums/topic/wordpress-and-bbpress-integration-101
Do NOT try to integrate WordPress 2.6 with bbPress 0.9 – only use WP 2.5.1 – the reason for this is simple – WordPress has radically changed the way cookies are used.
Are you using any plugins?
What version bbPress did you install? Is it integrated with your WordPress 2.7 installation (user logins I mean)?
I am trying to integrate bbPress into my WP-operated website. My WordPress is 2.6. I installed bbPress “Brubeck” (version 0.9.0.3) in a subdirectory titled “forum”. I chose the integration option. I created a separate database for bbPress with separate users. Everything went well but at the end I got this message:
“>>> WordPress cookie secret key not set.
>>>>>> Your “bb-config.php” file was not writable.
>>>>>> You will need to manually define the “BB_SECRET_KEY” in your “bb-config.php” file.”
I was able to login at first but later I opened the “bb-config.php” file and entered a secret code there. Then I tried to login again but I got this message:
“Too many redirects occurred trying to open “http://thepublicsphere.com/forum/bb-login.php”. This might occur if you open a page that is redirected to open another page which then is redirected to open the original page.”
I tried to login to my WordPress admin but none of my user names and passwords worked. I tried to reset the passwords but the emails I receive do not contain any new password, neither the link they provide leads to any reset page.
What should I do?
I downloaded bbPress into my wordpress directory, as I am planning on integrating bbPress into my wordpress site, and I go to http://www.mysitename/bbpress and the installer comes up. I put in what should be my database “name, user, and password” and I get the errors:
Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Can’t connect to local MySQL server through socket ‘/usr/local/mysql-5.0/data/mysql.sock’ (2) in /home/content/m/y/g/mygreensprout/html/bbpress/bb-includes/backpress/class.bpdb.php on line 123
and
! There was a problem connecting to the database you specified.
Please check the settings, then try again.
Any suggestions?
