Hi Matt, I think you could learn a lot from simplepressforum.com

If you could make BBpress as easy to use as that, everyone would use it. Make BBpress a plugin with full integration into the control panel and 1 click installation.

Right now, it’s like frankencoding trying to get all these things, BBpress, WordPress MU and Buddypress to all work together.

Make BBpress and Buddypress an already built-in option in the wordpress control panel that we simply have to check off to activate and everyone would use it.

Also, when is buddypress coming to single member wordpress installations?

Yeah don’t want to use an iFrame. I can get it to call the header but nothing else. It’s not calling my stylesheet. I’m only using header, footer, front-page, style.css. WordPress theme wasn’t that bad as i have good knowledge of html and css but no php knowledge until now. BBpress is giving me a fit and I want it to work because I like it, don’t want to revert to a forum plugin….All the info I read is changing the default theme or using these simple files from the wordpress theme to start. Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Best place to start:

    https://bbpress.org/forums/tags/integration

You will be copying the WordPress styles and using them in your bbPress theme to approximate the look of your WordPress site in bbPress.

Some people have also put bbPress in a iFrame inside a WordPress page (which I think is a horrible solution):

Alright I have my site at pickledpc.com and the forums at pickledpc.com/forums/

I’m trying to apply my wordpress theme to the forums to make it all look the same. I haven’t the slightest idea of where to start. I have tinkered with the style.css but can’t get anywhere. Any pointers? A good place to start?

    Thanks

    1. If your website is in public_html, then I would put the folder inside that folder, so you would have this:

    /public_html/bbpress/

    or

    /public_html/forums/

    or

    /public_html/discussions/

When you unzip bbPress, it will create a folder called bbpress. Rename that folder to whatever you want before you upload it.

Uncompress it on your desktop, then rename it, then upload the whole thing to public_html.

    4. Well, if /public_html resolves to your domain at http://www.example.com/ and you renamed your bbpress folder to discussions, you would visit http://www.example.com/discussions/ and start the installation.

If you want a link to the forum in your WordPress menu, you will need to create a Page with a slug that is identical to your folder name. So, if you called your folder discussions, create a Page called Discussions with a slug of discussions and if you’re using permalinks in WordPress, that menu item will serve up the bbPress installation.

There are also plugins that will allow you to redirect a page to another URL. You might need to do something like that.

    Custom Field Redirect: http://www.nathanrice.net/plugins/

    Page Links To: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/page-links-to/

There are ways to do it in a page template as well, but you might not need any of that. Create a page with the slug named the same as your forum folder, and it should ‘just work’.

Sure, and i’ll definitely use it. Im just a little scared about support or having to fix things that are beyond my reach.

So, as much as i Will test it. I don’t think im using it in production enivonment yet.

But, my concept of a forum, the way I am conceiving it, designin it, and targeting it, REQUIRES this feature. I won’t use it right now but I’m sure the lack of it will almost fully stop the growth of the site.

Simple as is, mi site “¿Cómo diablos.. ?” is targeted to solve basic questions to tech newbies in spanish, you can imagine there are a LOT of people, and grownups how are just getting to know a computer. And the process of registering, in a separate page, activating through email, and then asking some really basic question, it just really doesn’t work.

What we’ve been using until now is a WordPress site, with reply to coment mail notification enabled. So they just ask, and get the answer to their mails. It’s working ok. But we really think the right way of doing it is using a forum. Auto-creating an account when the user signs up could be incredibly useful for getting recurent visitors and building local support communities in common language.

Sorry for writing so much in such a bad english :P hope you understand.

I have two noob questions re: the installation instructions here: http://bbpress.org/documentation/installation/

    > 2. Upload the uncompressed files to your server

Where on the server? Do I upload the files to /public_html? to /public_html/wp-admin? etc.

I’ve read elsewhere that you should upload the uncompressed *folder* (i.e., “bbpress”) and its files. But the #2 says to upload the files? Which is it? I’ve also read elsewhere that you might want to rename the folder “bbpress” to something like “forum,” because this will determine the URL to your forum. Is that still the case? The author’s instructions don’t mention this, but it seems important.

    > 4. Visit the intended URL of the bbPress site

How do I create the intended URL? Do I need to create a new WordPress page and call it something like “Forum”?

You’re in luck! Try this script to see which bbPress plugins are slow:

    https://bbpress.org/plugins/topic/bb-benchmark/

This should do the trick on the WordPress side of things:

    https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/debug-queries/

    Good luck!

No idea what ‘watpocom’ is, but I assume it’s something to do with my hosting provider.

I did find out the slow executing scripts might be a plugin that tries to pull in a feeds or aggregators? They apparently take up a lot of CPU.

I have WordPress installed on the server as well and both installs have quite a few plugins between the two of them. Does anyone know if there’s a little tool where you can see how long / which script holds up the process?

A bit like http://tools.pingdom.com, but for PHP scripts?

This doesn’t seem to be working for me, all users seem to be assigned a default profile from my wordpress sync plugin. They are assessed as anonymous for some reason and given a specific profile from that plugin.

Sign out. Then log in from your forum instead of logging in from wordpress.

You might want to check my other thread about this. (I had the same problem)

Hello everyone. I am working on integrating a forum with my WordPress blog, and everything was going fine. Until I finished the install, and started working on the integration settings in the admin panel. In the section where it asks you to input the WordPress database prefix (I think it was to get the proper user tables), I put wp_ which is the prefix for my WordPress blog. Now, it doesn’t matter which account I log in with, I still cannot find the Admin link in the header. I’ve logged in both with my WordPress blog admin account, and my bbPress account. I’ve checked in the mySQL database, and my bbPress account still has the permission to access the admin panel, but I cannot see a link. It simply shows “Welcome, Legacyblade | Log Out”

Normally in these situations, I’d just uninstall and reinstall, but I’m not sure what Word Press tables were modified, and don’t want to mess up my blog. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

All comments should run through Akismet, as long as it’s active… it’s probably similar to how WordPress filters spam, which is to say it’s pretty good but not perfect.

So both Alekseo and Kawauso can both log in on the bbPress side and it’s fine, the problem exists only when logged in at WordPress?

Don’t put it in the same folder. It doesn’t work well. The subdomain solution is fine.

I just realized another easy solution (not that pimpin tho, sadly) when viewing the thread where people show off their forums. To install the forum on a subdomain. then it would look like http://forums.hi.com/forum/off-topic.

Is it possible to install bbPress in the same folder as WordPress or have anyone tried? I have seen alot of people trying to remove the extra /forum url that appears in bbPress. This really seems like the obvious solution and like it’s what it’s coded for initially. I only fear that it’s too easy and straight forward that it won’t work =)

I recently installed bbpress by extending buddypress 1.1 with wordpress mu 2.8.4. While everything is ok on the buddypress end, the forum does not have a “Add New Topic” link displayed…. I tried adding topics and posts through the database too, but same result! :( You can find the link to the forum here – http://smartlearnwebtv.com/iitjee/forums. I’d appreciate any help from you guys.

Note: The forum under the “Groups” category seems to work fine – not sure if this has got anything to do with the problem am facing.

Thanks for the replies. I intend to share WordPress user accounts so I’ll go with the same database.

    Thanks again.

It will integrate users with WordPress, if you want that.

It’s easiest to just use the WordPress database – just be sure the table prefix is different for WordPress and bbPress. WordPress uses wp_ by default and bbPress uses bb_ by default. Just be sure they are different, or bbPress will mess up your WordPress installation. Like this:

    Hi, iltdevunit

That really depends what you are going to do with you wordpress and bbPress installations.

Using one table (but differenct prefixes) will allow you to make better use of MySQL features as integration will be seamless.

As for bbPress – it could completely integrate into WordPress and could be standalone: so really it depends on you!

    Hi,

    I’m about to install bbPress.

For the database information in installation step 1, do I put in the WordPress db settings or am I supposed to create a new database and put its details i?

I’m not sure if bbPress integrates into WordPress or if it is a completely stone-alone bb that just happens to be by the same people that brought us WordPress.

    Cheers

ok so i uploaded fine, set-up fine, did the integration but did NOT set User Roles (BAD IDEA). Now the admin page has been removed because of the install, even un-installed the wordpress plugin. So I can’t fix it, tried to delete the forum folder and re-upload but the install is still there and still works just like it did, broke.

I can’t figure out how to correct the issue or even better a complete uninstall so I can follow the great tutorial here: http://bbpress.org/forums/topic/basic-integration-screencast

I’m guessing it has something to do with the sql tables but I’m lost at this point. pickledpc.com

what is the best way to correct the issue? and how can I ensure a complete reset so that i can do a fresh install?
