    This past weekend we spoke with John James Jacoby on our WordPress Weekly podcast. John is the lead developer for both the bbPress and BuddyPress plugins. We had the pleasure of chatting with him about his new job at 10up as well as everything that’s going on with bbPress and BuddyPress these days.

    During our interview we asked John if he knew of any bbPress or BuddyCamp events in the works. He said that he didn’t know of any coming up but would love to see a bbPress camp organized, perhaps in a more central midwest location. The question is: Is there enough interest to warrant a bbPress event or perhaps combine it with a BuddyPress event?

    Head on over and read the full post and vote in the poll 🙂

    Is Anyone Interested In a bbPress Camp?

    You’d have to edit the standard bbPress loop to put preference in an upvoted/marked answer above the rest. Seeing how it’s a custom post type it’s quite easy to do.

    I totally agree, this is a much needed function and is included in the majority of forums software. I am constantly asked for this and I cannot do anything about it. I really hope this ships with bbpress2 in the near future and I hope that developers of this great software take my request and the OP’s request to heart. The proof is in the pudding so to speak, if you look at the votes on this page you will see most people voting for BBPM to be updated for bbpress http://nightgunner5.wordpress.com/2011/03/12/bbpm-plugin-plugin/

    this is a necessary update we all need.

    I’m not a website developer. I’m just a user of WP for two sites. I have a third site that I had a developer set up which is a forum and it is run with phpbb (he said this is what I should use).

    What frustrates me is the huge DIFFICULTY in installing a “mod.” I don’t want to have to contact my web developer to install a mod every time I need one. That’s why ALL my websites (except this forum one) are run on wordpress – I can install/change just about anything on it myself within seconds.

    What I’m wondering is, if I switch to bbpress is the installation of plugins just like wordpress? I don’t have any problem with that because it’s just click on a couple of buttons. Phpbb on the other hand, requires me to edit files and write code for a “mod” installation. It’s time-consuming and drives me nuts.

    My forum is http://www.ForumJudo.com if that matters to your recommendations. I just basically want a site where users can send/receive private messages, vote on posts, post video/audio files, start topics, mods can delete posts & ban users, etc., and possibly a chat feature in the future.

    I just know that phpbb is too difficult to install “mods.” I don’t want to learn code.

    Thanks for any advice on this!

    Is there a plugin or add-on that would enable voting on user-submitted posts? I was thinking of using Gravity Forms with custom post types to receive the user-submitted posts/ideas, and then publishing the excerpts on the main page. But, I need a voting plugin to allow users to “like” or “vote up” their favorite ideas. Suggestions?

    I’ve seen a lot of plugins out there, but I don’t know which ones are compatible with Buddypress.

    Perhaps some type of “Moderation” feature would be useful so that only certain top content could be voted?

    @limitx3m
    nope, and it’s not likely to be made either. Votes on our forum are applied much like on reddit: some “go gold” because they shared quality content, while some might’ve just cracked a good joke. We would need a different voting system altogether (for which there are long-term plans in place) to make such a thing valuable – i.e. for our purposes, “top posts” should be the informative ones, not the funny ones, as newcomers probably wouldn’t get most of the jokes anyhow.

    Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find anything useful (working, stable, supported, up-to-date ..) in order to add a rating/vote up/reputation feature to my bbpress installation so far. Therefore I’m about to use something like wpanswers for my Q&A site but I’d prefer to use bbpress in order to promote the forum.

    Any ideas how to professionally integrate a voting up or rating feature into bbpress would be highly appreciated!

    Many thanks in advance!

    Cheers,

    I’ve installed bbpress via Buddypress, by adding the sitewide forums.
    I’ve also installed the plugin Vote-it-up.

    To use this plugin, i need to edit some of the bbpress files. I need to find the file that lists all the topics and the single forum topic file.

    I am using the Standard buddypress theme, but how can I access the bbpress files?

    Versions:
    Wordpress: 3.4.2
    bbpress: 2.1.2
    buddypress: 1.6.1

    Since you’ve recommended the vote plugin, maybe this question is appropriate here.

    I have a buddypress install and added bbpress via buddypress. Where do I have to add the code for the vote plugin? I know it’s in the single forum file, but I can’t find that in the standard buddypress theme.

    Sure thing.

    The boxes are CSS and our own design but you can use the Vote It Up plugin for votes, although it hasn’t been updated in ages.

    You’ll need to customise and theme it. BTW, we are using BBPress 2.0.2 and not the latest but it should work.

    Good Luck…

    Hey Roni!
    Awesome work. Can you please guide me regarding the insertion of Vote/Replies Boxes.

    @JJJ Seeing as how short you are on development resources for bbPress, I was wondering if you have considered participating in GSoC. Sure, you’ll probably need to devote a fair bit of your time mentoring instead of coding, but bbPress might gain some features or plugins, and who knows, maybe some long-term contributors…

    The following might help you as a checklist to narrow down and find the best groupon clone script available today in market with all the latest versions and features for different platforms. Today after so many innovations in the web and mobile applications development, it is difficult to achieve business amidst the growing competition, with just an efficient group buying website.

    The latest additives that provided by competitors who are striving to provide the best clone script are:

    Facebook App For Group Buying: Facebook is the best tool for viral marketing of your business today. The foremost advantage is that it helps to market every single deal pretty faster than we could do with a separate website. Hardly one or two providers have released a dedicated script to launch your group buying business as a complete, end-end Facebook app which possesses all the essential features to facilitate the viewing and buying of deals without the necessity to log into the actual website.

    The tremendous rise in the users’ population of smartphones has

    led the new steppers to demand for the best groupon clone script

    Ads by Google

    for smartphones too.

    Iphone app: The most reputed Apple iPhone has attracted a very significant population in the smart phone sector and hence it is an inevitable idea to launch your deal site as a iPhone app.

    Android app: This successful OS is one of the top competitors today which threatens the other smart phone OS in scoring. A few quality group business scripts have been released for the Android OS such as this one:

    Extension for internet browser (chrome)

    This is a very cool additive that almost any good quality group buying clone script would have, which can be easily installed in the chrome browser and with which users could easily view the latest deals, in just a drop down box. In fact this comes as a free download from this link:

    Barcode scanning This traditional retail method is currently the much spoken about special feature in the apps. For the customers who buy deals from your website, you can give a unique QR code which they can show to the merchant and by scanning it the merchant can access the status of the coupon.

    Refer A Friend – In all business models this ‘Refer A Friend’ option has been a very successful strategy since it almost doubles the probability of gaining a new customer (through an already existing customer).

    Merchant Login – This lets the merchants who use your group buy website to post deals and achieve business, to have a separate login for themselves through which they could modify vital settings, add photos or video to each deal, history of deals, etc.

    And most of the new steppers are turning towards Contus Support: since they are considered to be one of the providers for best group buy site script with the advantages of: flexibility, big list of essential features, different packages, post sales support and their pioneering into mobile apps for group buying .

    Making money on Facebook is literally the talk of the town. Since people have discovered that Facebook is not only a place for entertainment but also a killer business platform, there’s ain’t no rest for the developers. But how in the world is it possible to earn money on FB? People hang out there to have some fun, not to spend some bucks after all… This fact turns making money on Facebook into a very hectic task.

    Lots of Facebook apps were created within the last several years. All of them use some tricky idea that is targeted on attracting users’ attention and thus making money. Facebook Voting Engine is probably one of the most efficient scripts among the latest Facebook solutions. This script will help you to monetize the most popular social networking website. Voting Engine proposes users to vote for something or someone by liking it.

    The trick that underlies this script is very simple: people vote for something and automatically share the information about this voting with each and every friend on Facebook. So, you can buy this script and create your own votings. It’s not only a good way to make money out of Facebook, but also a lot of fun, especially if you have a healthy amount of criticism and able to create witty and funny contests. And people on FB don’t take it as spam, or annoying banners, or obnoxious hyping. For them it is just another funky stuff to kill time on Facebook. It takes them 1 minute to click “Like” button in the contest like Brad Pitt vs Johnny Depp, or Naruto vs Bleach. The more interesting contests you create the better your chances for success. A killer method!

    Ads by Google

    Download Google Chrome

    Searching is fast and easy with Google’s web browser.Google/Chrome

    So, you can grab such Voting script and make your own contests. You just should select the candidates (up to 4), create slogans, upload pictures, and send it outta web space. Every time someone votes, his or her friends on Facebook receive a message (a template generated by you like “I voted for … Now it’s your turn!”) that informs them of this contest. What comes around goes around, and you can make it really viral in as little as two weeks!

    Thus, making money on Facebook is not all about hard and tedious work. Making money and having fun can be the synonyms when it comes to good Facebook script. Facebook Voting Engine is the best way to promote your website, get more traffic, and thus showcase your product or service in a flash. Some people say it’s difficult to succeed on FB.

    Is FB Cash Blueprint a scam? I am sure that you are already using Facebook for the purpose of social networking. This network is growing exponentially larger and larger every day, with more and more users starting to join and using it as a quick way to connect with everyone that they know.

    2. What Have I Learned from this Facebook Money Making Course?

    I have learned how to effectively tap into this huge traffic source of Facebook that already has gathered more than four hundred million users today. Statistics show that about half of these people log in to their accounts every day, which means that I have the potential to get repeat visits every day without having to put in extra work.

    3. Do the Methods In this Facebook Marketing Blueprint Really Work in the Long Run?

    Even though there is a serious downturn in the economy, you should understand that it is having no effect on web marketing and online sales. In fact, online sales have increased and FB Cash Blueprint provides me with the strategies for tapping into these sales to earn a living for myself. I am also glad that I have gotten in early and would expect it to become much more competitive within the next 5 years.

    Well, do not buy anything until you read this review. It can be hard to figure out which software is the best for your needs with all the various options out there. That is why I took a detailed look at all the clone scripts that are available.

    The one script that has several good reviews and is very popular is PhpFox.

    Here are the features of PhpFox:

    It is easy to make money with, because the ability to add subscriptions, easy ads placement, and market place listings

    You can easily develop your own modules, so you can get it to do what you want with ease

    It is really ten plus website scripts in one. Is it the Facebook Clone available? Well in my opinion it is. The company has been in business since 2005. It is being used by several large businesses. Their support forum is active with thousands of members that are willing to help and share how they had success with the script. If you buy any kind of website script make sure they have an active forum, because it will help you greatly with any problems that may occur.

    Hi, I’m just stopping by, but I think I may be able to some help with coding.

    I can do some simple PHP, mostly without the classes/objects stuff (I’m currently in the process of learning PHP, so would really like some practical experience other than tweaking plugins).

    I’m better with MySQL. I can devote perhaps 2 to 3 hours a day.

    I’m located at the UTC+8 timezone (although I probably can’t get up at 5 AM to attend the dev meeting).

    Dave,

    I don’t think its a vote issue, just an opinion. I too would like to have bbpress as a forum, but seriously out of the box it is weak, very weak. It is geared towards ‘developers’ and “cake makers”

    As for the other “big” forums software you suggest, well I am sure they are great but why on earth would you want to do WP integration work. Thats like creating more work instead of the original folks doing the work.

    The simplicity of SimplePress is it is already a WP plugin! It comes out of the box with FULL features in less than 5 minutes.

    I would challenge anyone out there to do an install of bbpress and SimplePress and compare.

    @bollocks187

    I don’t agree here. SimplePress has do many features for a lot of users/use cases. Yes, it works, it’s active developed and maintained. I tested the new 5.0 beta two weeks ago and it’s still feature overload and a totally different user interface different from “normal” WP… And regarding translation they don’t go with WP standards here and so until they fix some things I could not get it into German. Old 4.x branch is no option because I need optimized code for a new project and also future-proof with WP 3.3+

    bbPress — I only mean the plugin version 2.x — on the other hand is really simple but has all I need. It works with almost any theme/framework and I could easily tweak it via CSS. This is a big advantage. Performance-wise it’s really leightweight and future-proof with WP because of custom post types for forum contents.

    YES, I know it has not so many features – a few could be added via plugin add-ons – and I assume a lot more will come in the next weeks or month.

    IMHO bbPress 2.x is best for small to middle-range communities, best for simple support forums and such. If I need a full packed forum solution with ALL the many and big features I almost always will use a third-party solution like Vanilla, IPB or new XenForo. These have clean style and great UI in frontend AND backend. And with some work of integrating could be work together with WordPress too. — Just look at the newly launched support forum by iThemes.com – they use IPB Forums and it’s great for such a big community.

    However, there are some great new bbPress forums out there, see at devpress.com, wpcandy.com, support.pippinsplugins.com, getshopped.com etc. So the bbPress plugin has already proven to manage such communities and they’re doing great.

    I vote for bbPress and at the same time have much respect for the work of the Simple:Press devs but just would not use their system!

    -Dave :)

    Hi all,

    I am looking into possible ways to rank forum topics via user ratings, ie, a feature request forum where users can vote on if they want the features suggested in each topic. I have been looking at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/rating-widget/screenshots/ which claims it has bbpress support, but I cannot find out how to set it up. Has anyone trued this before or know of other possible rating plugins

    hello,

    I try desperately to create some kind of widget for my blog with last forum entries .

    I think query_posts was indicated because it is simple and effective.

    here is the code I use to fully control the design of my widget.

    <div id=”lastreply”>

    <?php

    query_posts(“post_type=reply”);

    while (have_posts()) : the_post();

    ?>

    <div class=”post”>

    <div class=”thumb”><?php echo get_avatar( get_the_author_id() , 60 ); ?></div>

    <h4>” rel=”bookmark”><?php the_title(); ?></h4>

    <small>De <?php the_author_posts_link(); ?> <span class=”red”>♥</span> <span class=”tag”><?php the_tags(‘#’,’, #’); ?></span></small>

    <?php the_excerpt(); ?>

    </div><!– fin de post –>

    <?php endwhile; ?>

    </div><!– last reply–>

    I have 3 problems so that my poor php skills prevents me to solve.

    1 / the title is not good, it starts with “reply to” it would have been clearer to the title of the topic directly.

    2 / the link isn’t the link to topic but the link for the answer!

    3 / but it’s going to be warmer, I wish to join the last replies to the last comment into a single widget, except that query_posts doesn’t work with the comments ^ ^

    would you have a little time to devote to my request? Thank you in advance.

    Sure, this is an example of loop-topic.php:

    <?php while ( bbp_topics() ) : bbp_the_topic(); ?>

    (etc...)

    <div class="vote-count<?php rating_class($thumbs_number); ?>">
    <h4>
    <?php wp_gdsr_render_article_thumbs(); ?></h4><span><?php votes_text($thumbs_number); ?></span>
    </div><?php $replies_number = bbp_get_topic_reply_count(); ?>

    <div class="reply-count<?php reply_class($replies_number); ?>">
    <h4>
    <?php bbp_topic_reply_count(); ?></h4><span><?php reply_text($replies_number); ?></span>
    </div>

    <div class="freshness-count">
    <h4>
    <?php bbp_topic_freshness_link(); ?></h4><span><?php bbp_author_link( array( 'post_id' => bbp_get_topic_last_active_id(), 'size' => 14 ) ); ?></span>
    </div>

    (etc…)

    Basically, you just have to place the code that generates the rating inside the bbpress loop. You can place it in files like loop-topic.php, loop-replies.php, etc.

    Almost all voting and rating plugins work this way (I’m using gd star rating).

    The next step is to be able to sort the topics and replies according to their rating. But I’ve already spent one year trying that with no results.
