    Topic: Theme Packages

    in forum Themes

I installed bbPress 2.1.3 on WordPress 3.4.2. In the settings page, I see the following:

    Theme Packages

How your forum content is displayed within your existing theme.
    Current Package
    – bbPress Default (bbp-theme-compat)
    – Twenty-ten bbPress

If I select the 1st option, forum page comes up nicely, none of the existing forums show up. If I select the 2nd options, existing forums show up, but the layout is completely broken.

I am using custom WordPress theme. What am I doing wrong?

I have tried many times to use the migration plug in and I cannot get it to work. So I have put an ad up on oDesk if anyone is interested in helping me out.

    An aside:

I will save my long rant about how poor the documentation for this process is because frankly I am exhausted and exasperated. You guys work so hard and do such good work, but you drop the ball on the simple issue of documentation, so people’s experience with your amazing product (I’ve been using it for 5 years) is one of frustration and anger.

If you create a tool/wizard to help non-web developers use your complicated product you cannot assume they are web developers. Spell things out provide details.

For example: Don’t say “Database Server: Leave as ‘localhost’ unless your hosting provider requires you to use an IP address.”

Instead say something like “Database Server: This is the name of the database server where your OLD data base is located, normally it is “localhost” (no quotes), but sometimes it has a different name or you must provide the IP address of the server. This varies based on how the company where you host your website has things set up.”

Notice the details that a developer probably does not need, but the average user you created the wizard for will need and will get tripped up by.

I am a data scientists. I program all day and I have sent 4 or 5 hours trying to get the migration to work and still no dice.

BBPress Message Board Migration: Step 1 upgrade database
Fixed Price Project – Est. Budget $20.00 – Posted 13 minutes ago

    Job Description
I have a site that is currently using bbPress 1.1-alpha-2539 and I need to finally move to the latest plug-in wordpress version. I need help with the entire process, but this ad is for step 1, migrating the database.

What I want from you is a detailed step by step set of instructions for migrating my database to the new format. I am a programer and data scientist, but have no experience with the tech BBpress is built on, I have played around with the wizards found here:

    http://codex.bbpress.org/import-forums/

I am obviously missing something because they do not work for me. I will provide you with whatever you need so you can work out what the steps are, and I want you to provide for me:

    1) First things first, before you start anything I want you to provide me with a back up of my existing database. If it makes sense to do this in multiple formats then lets do the top 3.

    2) Start with the step by step instructions found here:

    http://codex.bbpress.org/import-forums/

This is not detailed enough because I cannot follow it a get it to work. So you are to add to these step-by-step instructions so that I can do the migration myself when the time comes.

You are free to create new databases as you test out the migration methods, but once you are done I want you to clean up after yourself leaving none of the new databases on my server.

Qualifications: You must know BBpress and WordPress very well, I want someone who can help me with this and other steps in the process (They will be posted to oDesk as new jobs, but I would like to work with the same person throughout the process.). I need someone who can customize or build plug-ins for BBPress if we discover there is a need for a functionality that is not available. You must also be good with databases and able to tell me how to purge certain records based on given criteria. I am also interested in integrating a Wiki with the message board, so your thoughts on that would be helpful too.

In your application please tell me about your experience with BBpress.

    Thanks,

Hi, I’m trying to figure out what am I doing wrong. It is a fresh install of latest BBpress and wordpress. Installation went just fine. It is possible to enter a specific forum, but when i’m trying to access the forum root it shows me this 1 line instead of the list of the forums:
    > סנטור › Forums Forum Topics Posts Freshness b mn 0 0 No Topics
    Link the site: santur.co.il/forums
I got this feeling that its some small tick in a configuration file but i’m quite clueless on how to approach it. Any help would be most welcome. Thanks, Daniel

If you use the default WordPress theme twentyten, or twentyeleven, you will see that bbPress lines up perfectly with the sidebars. There is no way that bbPress can work perfectly with all themes on the market as everyone builds themes differently.

That is up to the theme developer to get straightened out For the most part it is usually just a few css tweaks and very easy to do. So I would ask the author who built the theme. If he/she is unable/unwilling to fix it, then post a link to your site here and maybe someone will find the time to help out. There is NO WAY for anyone to help without seeing your actual site.

That ability is not built in, it is plugin territory, sounds more like a trouble ticket scenario than a forum setup. While the logic is not included within the templates, the logic does exist within WordPress itself, so it is possible to build yourself. You have all the needed filters and action hooks to pull it off.

I’m sorry you feel that way. bbPress has come a long way and does a lot of things quite well. The code itself is a perfect example of exactly how to build a WordPress plugin as it follows all standards. The new trunk vs. is also a huge improvement over the current 2.1x release, so there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes.

I am aware of a number of fairly large and well known websites currently running bbpress and very happy with it, so to each his own.

There are no ‘themes’ for bbPress per say. Basically bbPress is a plugin that you install onto your WordPress site. It uses whatever theme your site uses. Of course just like your site templates you can build your own custom bbPress templates if you are good enough to do that. There are a few commercial bbPress themes available, search google and you can find a few, there are not many though as the theme is really your website theme.

WordPress.com = software that they run and allow you to have a blog
WordPress.org = download software that you install onto your own web server and manage yourself
bbPress.org = plugin for WordPress.org that you install onto your web server once you have WordPress installed and running.

The 2 WordPress sites have virtually nothing to do with each other, other than the fact that they run the same software. One is a hosted service, and one is software that you run.

If this part is foreign to you, then yes, sadly you are out of your league and need to do a lot of reading. If you want forums, then there are companies out there that host WordPress sites for you that you can upload your own plugins to such as bbPress. You are pretty much on your own there.

Hello! FIrst I really love bbPress and the way it looks on my site. Second, I am a complete and total newbie at this. That being said, I have a wordpress site (using wordpress 3.4.2) and I have a bbPress forum on it (am running version 2.1.3). I can login and access my site fine and I am labeled as a “key master” on my forum. The problem comes in where my users are concerned.

When my users log in they get the “you do not have sufficient permissions to access this page” and it says in the URL: “http://www.mysitesname.com/wp-admin/plugins.php?plugin_status=all&loggedout=true.”

Now the weird thing is when they delete all the stuff after the “.com” and refresh, it shows them as logged in and they can leave comments on the site and interact with the forum. It’s just the logging in and being redirected to the site that seems to be the issue. My users when they sign up are given the role of “forum participant.”

There are plugins I am using (well some of them) are:

    • bbPress Mark as Read
    • bbPress2 BBCode
    • bbPress Like Button
    • bbPress Post Toolbar
    • bbP Signature
    • GD bbPress Attachments
    • Members
    • Simple Local Avatars
    • User Role Editor

I have a couple of other plugins as well, but these were the ones that I installed to have users interact and customize their forum experience.

I am not sure what the issue is and since all my users are mostly concerned about being able to log in and have access to the forum, I figured I would try here first.

Thanks so much in advance for your time!

I found the ForumConvertor. It says that version is not compatible with the newer WordPress 3.4.2 that I have. But I decided to try it anyways since you recommended it. I have no attachments or avatars, so I left those fields blank. Everything else was filled out. Then when I initiated conversion, it said Conversion failed. Conversion not support.Stumped. I guess I have to wait till this Forum Convertor is updated?

I have installed bbPress, and I have search the forum everywhere and I have no such things as User Title in Edit Profile, neither in Profile, in Users in WordPress.

My question is, how can I change the Custom Title of different users, or of all. From “Key Master” to something else.

Also I have installed the “Add custom usergroups” plugin that’s somewhere here on the forums, but don’t have the slightest ideea where to select a group to a user.

    Thanks.

Hi there – We just started using bbPress, so I’m still learning all the in’s and out’s.

    Two questions…

1.) One of our members accidentally posted in the wrong forum. How can I move his post to the correct one?

2.) Our forum doesn’t seem to have this cool preview window that I’m seeing as I type this. How can I activate it?

We’re using WordPress v3.4.2 and bbPress v2.1.2 — Our site is a membership site, so if I post a link, it won’t be helpful because the content is locked.

    Thanks in advance!
    Cynthia

You have a couple of options. There is a plugin on the wp depository called demo-data-creator https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/demo-data-creator/ or you could (if you haven’t already) check out Spence’s link at the top of the page to http://labzip.com/the-definitive-guide-to-buddypress-bbpress-configuration/

He has a very generous freebie located there as well as some solid buddypress/bbpress training.

    Hope that helps, Dave

    WordPress version – 3.4.2
    bbPress version – 2.1.3
    Website – kidbusinessowners.wordpress.com/

Alright I am, well, almost completely clueless on how all of this stuff works. I downloaded the WordPress today and the bbPress. My main reason for trying WordPress is because I want to have a forum. I don’t understand, I’ve created a user with both WordPress.com and WordPress.org and I can make my blog with the .com but I downloaded the stuff on the .org. How do I link up the download with my website? Does it require an extensive knowledge of scripting codes (which, as you can tell, I’m not extremely good at)? Thank you!

Afraid I’ll need more information to be helpful then; the only time I’ve seen this is with Jetpack 2.0 installed. It’s possible some other plugin or theme is causing a similar issue, but it’s still a WordPress core bug at the core.

I wasn’t using jetpack, and the error occured after I updated bbpress to 2.1.3
I rerun a backup, where bbpress is 2.1.2 again and the issue is gone.
The insert media button within wordpress works again and the fancy editor shows all buttons normally.
No clue if the update really caused it not too fond to find out either haha.

    #119796

@robertfudge – unlikely, though it depends how that plugin adds fields. WordPress only provides one hook for adding extra profile fields, and it’s not robust enough to do very much with.

    #119794

Version 2.1.3 does everything it can to suppress the issue in Jetpack 2.0. Jetpack 2.0.1 will come with its own fix. It’s actually a WordPress core issue causing this; see: https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/22413

Or maybe: How to “promote” bbPress forum topic to WordPress blog post?

Hi, does anyone know how to display latest topics on front page? To be more specific I want them to appear just like normal wordpress posts do. New topics are shown just like new posts. Does anyone know a aplugin that does that or any other suggestions? I don’t need another sidebar widget for bbpress plugin. I can do styling on my own but can’t handle with coding.
    please help

I have just created a ticket in trac https://bbpress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/2021 and we will look into this as soon as we can.

Using Twenty Tweleve wordpress theme, the default compat theme the html and visual tabs are to the left and if clicked they create and tags, there’s no background behind the toolbar. If I click the link button, the popup shows up but it looks as if all the CSS for it is missing and I see constant loading icons. If I disable the “fancy” toolbar, I don’t see a toolbar or buttons at all. If I switch to Twenty Ten forum theme, then the toolbar shows.

** Update, looks like a conflict with Jetpack, works fine if I disable it.

I am trying to repro it now… Not having much luck though!

What themes activated do you see this problem?

What themes activated do you NOT see this problem?

Do you see the correct toolbar on bbPress ‘Create Topic’ & ‘Create Reply’ regardless of the activated theme?

And is it the same behaviour with WordPress posts and pages?
