I’ve set up a forum, by making a page, and for some reason the bbpress sidebar isn’t showing up. My pages sidebar is coming up. How can I fix this?

any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks 🙂

    Hello,

I’m struggling to get a new subscriber user I created to test functionality and found that they are unable to upload pictures / files. I understand that only users who are able to upload media will be able to add new media but I’ve edited the access rights to allow subscribers to upload their own media.

    I’m using:
    Wordpress: Version 3.9.1
    bbPress: Version 2.5.3
bbPress Enable TinyMCE Visual Tab: Version 1.0.1 –

I’ve setup a fresh install of wordpress and I’m running a minimum of plugins, user switching, bbpress, bbpress genesis and the bbPress Enable TinyMCE Visual Tab plugin. I’m also using a plugin by WP-Types called Access to that I’ve used to make a subscriber able to read, edit, delete and publish their own media files.

How do I get the basic subscriber user to be able to:

    • create a topic
    • reply to topics
    • be able to upload media as a forum participant

I’ve got the settings > forum > set to ‘Automatically give registered visitors the Participant forum role’. What else do I need to do?

    Thanks
    Cathie.

FYI: If it helps, here’s the versions of all stuff currently running:

    Core:
    WordPress version: 3.9.1
Configuration setup for multisite. Currently, only one site installed and running (but with the intention to add ‘micro’ sites at a later date).

    Plugins:
    bbP Private Groups version: 1.6
    bbPress version: 2.5.3

    Theme:
    Twenty Fourteen version 1.1

Nope, I’ve not touched the Twenty fourteen theme since I added it. It’s been updated whenever required anyway though (I don’t like the seeing the update icon in the admin, so I tend to always keep things on the latest version whether I’m using it or not).

This is a multisite install of WordPress though – Would that affect the $wpdb->get_col() visibility?

I’m working on a test wordpress site for a car club and I’ve tried to add a Forum…

    http://thesaabenthusiasts.co.uk/Forum/forum/forum/

Is there anyway of showing the Forum (and it’s topics) on the Forum page, rather than having to click on ‘Forum’ in the Menu, then click on Forum again?

Just to be clear on two things, first this is awesome the plugins you are writing and supporting Robin 🙂

    Second https://codex.wordpress.org/Forum_Welcome#The_Bad_Stuff

    * Forum members should not post their email addresses, ask others to post their email or solicit contacting people off of the forums.
    * Plugin and theme authors may post their contact URL or even their email address in their own support sub-forum, but that should be a last resort thing.
    * Forum members, including plugin and theme authors, should never ask for admin or FTP access to a server, MySQL, or WordPress installation.

Thus far in this thread, nothing is ‘out of order’, these rules are designed to protect both user and supporter, if something does go horribly wrong and the ‘supporter’ breaks things really badly or the ‘user’ has a change of heart and accuses the ‘supporter’ of breaking their site things get ugly very quickly and neither party will be very happy.

These rules are designed to safeguard all parties and the vast majority of time things can be explained using just the forums, just take your time and explain it clearly so the other party can reproduce the issue, step by step with the resulting outcome and what you’d expect the outcome to be.

Edit: So carry on doing what your doing, I just thought I should point this out and probably should add this to our ‘create new topic form’ as a reminder…

I considered that the content could at least be imported, then the admin would do whatever he wants to with that content. But maybe the groups ownership and membership will be impossible to mimick at bbPress level solely, so it’s better to avoid importing rather than making public content that was private to begin with…?

    – Groups forums (either drop topics, leave them as parentless, or create hidden forums as per the group name)

I don’t think leaving them parentless is the best way to go, maybe creating a hidden forum might be the way to go. Let’s leave this out for now, we can revisit this in the future easily enough and get v1 out and revisit this for v2.

I’m adding a Users section to your own version of the converter module (based on other converters available). If we want to import user-related settings, like forums/topics subscriptions and favorites, is this possible ? WPS uses usermeta, and I would assume bbPress does so…?

    – user meta (forum subscriptions, favorites)

Yes, mainly, I haven’t looked at importing subscriptions or favorites yet in any of the importers, will get there one day.

What you have added looks fine via your latest commit here.

WordPress database error: [Table ‘xxx.wp_bp_groups_groupmeta’ doesn’t exist]

You only get this error if you don’t have BuddyPress installed and activated, I need to add some inline docs for this and help docs.

How do you access a parentless topic in bbPress ? Could these be used for WP Symposium groups forum topics ?

You will see them in the topic list in the backend, you won’t see them on the front end unless you make them a sticky or know the url but they will be publicly accessible. Finding them in the backend is not so easy unless you know the title of the topic. Not the best experience, but also was never really planned for, it was just never enforced that a topic must have a forum either.

    – Could you clarify what a forum and a category refer to, in bbPress terminology ? Is a category a subforum, which has necessarily a parent forum, while a forum has no parent ? In such a case, there should be a test over symposium_cats.cat_parent in callback_forum_type(), otherwise it can be simply disregarded…

Both a forum and a category can have sub forums or sub categories, forums can have topics, categories cannot have topics.

Thus symposium_cats.cat_parent is already being used with _bbp_forum_parent_id and this is how we get the forums, sub-forums, categories etc all ordered correctly in their correct nested levels.

I think we are good, I’ll grab the latest shortly and the patch to bbPress Trac Ticket #2603 and I’ll take it for a test drive then commit it and it will be part of bbPress v2.6.

@robin-w I’m using a customised version of the Roots theme (http://roots.io/).
The site is in development at the moment, but I’ll send you a personal email with a login to the beta site. I’ll also set you up as a wordpress admin and forum keymaster so you can take a look around. Thanks for your help on this by the way – I’ll be sure to make a donation once I get paid myself 🙂

New version 1.6 available from wp-plugins

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/bbp-private-groups/

    or my site

    bbp Private Groups

This version fixes the [bbp-topic-form] shortcode so that it only displays allowed forums (previously it showed all forums, but only allowed posting in authorised).

It is not a bug, we removed the default behaviour to have both editors enabled by default in 2.3.1, switching between editor types would more often than not change the content of the users topics or replies.

Now that TinyMCE v4 has shipped with WordPress v3.9.x once we have a few more architectural fixes in bbPress we can take another look, it is far from a small bug, quite complex to be honest.

Hey guys. So Ive been wondering this for a long time, and I just dont understand. Why is bbPress’ editor so bad? Everything uses lame tags and is very primitive. WordPress already has color and bold and italic and linking and everything integrated, so why doesn’t bbPress add this?

No one can actually tell me that bbPress is meant to be this way? Is there something stopping the devs from just importing the full editor over…?

    Very curious…

The image is coming from your images folder, /images/header_bg.png. If this is a wordpress install then it will be something like http://saveourgrace.com/wp-content/theme/advantage/images/header_bg.png. Once you have identified this you could either swap it with another image called bg.png that’s just white, or you could delve into the CSS (is there an option to add your own custom CSS in your theme?) and hide the background with .background img {visibility:hidden;}.

Chrome Inspector or Firefox Firebug are useful tools, if you’re that way inclined. They will help identify elements in the page and where images are coming from.

I want the users to get email alerts every time their forum role changes to a specific role.

Namely, I have to notify them only if their role has changed from Spectator to Participant.

I found a way to do this with standard WordPress roles, but it doesn’t work with bbPress roles.

    http://clicknathan.com/web-design/notify-a-wordpress-user-when-their-role-has-been-changed-to-a-specific-role/

I tried changing if ($new_role == 'contributor') to if ($new_role == 'participant') and even to this if ($new_role == 'bbp_participant') – nothing worked.

    Perhaps someone knows the solution?

I forgot to mention that while “repairing missong information”, I got the following error message several times, not sure where it comes from:
WordPress database error: [Table ‘xxx.wp_bp_groups_groupmeta’ doesn’t exist]

Other than that, as of tonight the WPS > bbP converter / importer works for the following:
    – WPS categories, parent / child
    – topics, sticky topics
    – replies
    – users

    Yet to be done:
    – Groups forums (either drop topics, leave them as parentless, or create hidden forums as per the group name)
    – user meta (forum subscriptions, favorites)
    Anything else ?

It is possible when combining buddypress/bbpress and wordpress.

I have (after long hard work) found a workaround/hack to do that, have a look to see if this is what you meant at: http://www.cultivators-forum.com/activity

    This is regarding http://saveourgrace.com/forums/

I believe I followed all the instructions properly. However, initially, my WordPress “Page” with link above was blank. I found advice at http://bbpress.org/forums/topic/bbpress-forum-blank-pages/ that it may be a theme issue, so I simply added the short code [bbp-forum-index].

This got the page working as you can see it now. It properly shows the “Fundraising” forum. However, the number of topics is listed as 0, and when I click on the forum name, I get the otherwise blank page at http://saveourgrace.com/forums/forum/fundraising/ .

I did add a topic per the instructions, and confirmed on the topics list page that my topic belongs to the fundraising forum.

I am using the theme “Academica” version 1.2.2. I changed to “Twenty Thirteen” temporarily, and things seemed much better. I could see and get into the topic. If I figure out how to make the topic show with “Academica”, am I nevertheless going to find myself fighting an endless battle with this theme? Or should one more fix take care of it? (Of course, if it is just one more fix, what might that fix be?)

    Note I’m using WordPress 3.9.1.

    Thanks very much,
    Helmut

bbpress bypasses the standard profile update of WordPress with its own form. So, none of the standard plug-ins are likely to do this. The function that needs to be modified is: bbp_edit_user_handler in wp-content\plugins\bbpress\includes\common\functions.php.

I added my own edit check (just before the caps check):

    $symbol = preg_quote('~!@#$%^&*()_+-=[]{}"|?<>.,|£’);
    if (strlen($_POST[‘pass1’])<12)
    {
    if(!preg_match(‘/^(?=.*\d)(?=.*[A-Z])(?=.*[a-z])(?=.*[‘ . $symbol . ‘])[0-9A-Za-z’ . $symbol . ‘]{6,16}$/’, $_POST[‘pass1’])) {

    bbp_add_error( ‘bbp_update_user_capability’, __( ‘ERROR: The password must be 6 or more characters with at least one uppercase, one lowercase, one digit and one symbol.’, ‘bbpress’ ) );
    return;
    }
    }`

It’s not really a check for “strong passwords” based on the WordPress meter, but it is better than nothing. I don’t really know enough about PHP/JavaScript etc. to do that. I also had the password generated modified to fit these rules, but the reality is that the generated password is already a “strong password”.

Yes this is possible, bbPress posts are the same as WordPress posts so you would be able to send an ID to an ajax function and then retrieve a topic by ID with replies and display it in the “Load topic here” area.

Good luck with your build! 🙂

Im trying plan our forum layout. I have purchased the Support Desk theme from Hero Themes, but I want to change some things to the forum. Most importantly i want to choose topics in a left pane, and have them load in the right pane. The idea is that people dont have to go back and forth.

    Mockup

Were going to post a project on freelancer.com or similar, but it would be nice to know a little bit more before we go ahead. Is this a simple matter of creating a wordpress template, or do i need a bbpress-expert? Is there a reason why i hardly see this layout on forums i dont know about?

Multiple user levels https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/bbp-private-groups plugin should do this
Capacity to see at a glance live updated list of who has commented – could be coded but is not in the current version.
Is there a way to integrate Dropbox – not that I know
He would like a tag cloud also. – yes that’s there

    Hello

I am quite a newbie in regards to web design/development, especially wordpress and bbpress are quite tricky to learn when not knowing anything about php etc.

For about 5 months i have been hacking away and pasting existing code to create what I hope to be a nice allround bbpress/buddypress theme.

It is still being worked on but I would love some feedback on my progress.

One of my main motivators of continuing with BBPress is Tamriels foundry, one of the few examples that show that it is possible to create a forum similar to that of premium forums, with the added bonus of having wordpress/bbpress and budypress with their helpful communities.

You guys rock and thanks to looking at your code I am able to create my own community site.

‘You can pass wp_query args into bb_has_topics(), but I can only only come up with code that shows topics from one forum – not multiple forums.’

I’m afraid I don’t have time at the moment to do lots of coding for others, but take a look at this plugin

    bbp Private Groups

Look at includes/topics.php for how I did this for private groups – called pg_has_topics, it may give you some help – I used ‘post__in’ to create a list of topics to display

So you could do a coupe of loops to create this list and the pass that to the bbp_has_topics function.

    ‘post__in’ is realy, useful sometimes

About the second issue, here is the scenario I used as I remember it:
    1. create a topic in forum A
    2. edit the topic (WordPress editor, not “modify button”) and change the forum for this topic to forum B
    3. from the WordPress dashboard, go to Topics/All Topics
    4. move the topic to Trash
    5. go to Trash, recover the topic
Expected result: the topic is recovered
Actual result: a new page popped up asking me if I really wanted to do that with a retry link. Hitting retry didn’t actually recover the post. The post never got recovered

    Btw found another issue today:
    prerequisites:
    – BuddyPress must be installed and a menu must be available to show the site-wide activity
    – forum A is public, forum B is hidden
    – user 1 has access to forum A only
    – user Admin has access to forum A and B

    1. with user 1, create a topic into forum A which is a public forum
    2. with user Admin, click Modify button on the topic, and change the forum of the topic to forum B which is a hidden forum
    3. go to the BuddyPress Activity page of the site and observe

Expected result: activity of user 1 posting a topic into forum A is not present
Actual result: activity of user 1 posting a topic into forum A is present. This is a security issue as users can see publicly a post that has been moved into a hidden forum.

I have tried various repair options for this one but that didn’t fix the problem and the topic still shows up into the Activity page.
