I knew bbPress for a while, but didn’t do anything with it until a few weeks ago. I needed bbPress for some projects to embed it in already running WordPress installations. At first I installed bbPress from the WordPress plugin repository and activated it. So far easy as every other plugin.

But how do I show this thing a WordPress site? I created a page called ‘Forum’ and inserted the shortcode [bbp-forum-index] into it. Published the page and everything was visible. But now? Why do I need more shortcodes if this is working?

You can copy bbPress template files into your own custom theme folder. This is a way to change some look and feel together with CSS changes. My first question was ‘why are there so many template files?’ As an experienced WordPress theme developer I would say you only need a few. Like forums.php, topics.php and replies.php. I lost my way. Which template is used for which page?

As long as everything works, it’s okay. But then I ran into problems. I am totally lost. I don’t know what is the right way to embed bbPress into WordPress. Just by creating a page? Or add the template files to my custom theme? Both ways got me into the same problems.

I love WordPress, I love to be active in translating and contributing to various projects, I love to help organizing my local WordCamp, but I don’t love to be lost. In my opinion bbPress should work as easy as any other theme file in WordPress. Where you can construct your own page using functions, which are available in a Codex.

Have you tried saving the permalinks again? Is debugging turned on for the whole WordPress install? Is there any debug output?

I should also add that I have deactivated all my plugins and switched to the default wordpress theme, still no luck.

Yup, it worked.

The problem is the plugin is not very tolerant (version numbers had to be added to make it work) and not very communicative (doesn’t show a message when import is completed). But it worked.

I’m curious to know how well bbpress scales. As it stands right now, I’m beginning to think that WordPress is a bit of a dog despite being good for a number of things, relatively speaking. I haven’t seen many using bbpress other for simple support type sites – does anyone use it on a larger scale?

How Sean_A say, WangGuard is a WordPress Plugin but works with bbPress 2.x

Install WangGuard is as simple as going to Plugins tab -> Add New -> search for WangGuard and install it.

Ones you install WangGuard, you will need an API Key.

Hi Pkiula,

WangGuard actually will ONLY work with 2.x versions of bbPress, so you’ll be fine to use it. It won’t work with the standalone versions.

To install it you would just install it as though you were doing any other WordPress plugins, go to your admin panel, plugins section, and install.

The plugin directory overhere is pretty much outdated. They were made for the original version of bbPress.

Newer plugins can be found in the WordPress plugin directory:

Will WangGuard work with the “BB WordPress Plugin” version? (Not the standalone version of BBPress). I am using 2.0.2 Plugin.

If yes, then where should I install this plugin? Which folder?

Even changing the roles to “Forum moderator” and installing the “Members” plugin (https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/members/) did not change anything (working on the same issue)

Installed it, but still doesn’t work for me. As admin I have created Topics in the forum and as a Forum Participant I get “Oh bother! No topics were found here!” and do not see any topics.

Hi,

I installed bbPress 2.0.2 on WordPress 3.3.1. Embedded it in the site of a customer. There are some forums created. All are Forum, Open and Public. Some topics are added by an Administrator. So far everything ok.

When a user with role Forum Participant logs in, it can access the forum, but no topics are shown:

This forum contains 4 topics and 0 replies, and was last updated by xxx 1 min ago.

Oh bother! No topics were found here!

Administrators do see the topics. What is happening here?

as basic integration you can duplicate your index.php file in your theme direcotry and name it bbpress.php. then make changes in that file. it is wrapper file that bbpress will use. bbpress checks for wrapper file in given order: ‘bbpress.php’, ‘forum.php’, ‘page.php’, ‘single.php’, ‘index.php’

If you want custom sidebar for bbpress pages then use “bbPress WP Tweaks” plugin from wordpress plugin repository.

If you want different sidebar to be displayed instead of blog sidebar in your theme then you can use this plugin that replaces your blog sidebar with forum specific sidebar.

On forum sidebar you can list forums, login box or login and register links, latest topics. While on blog you would list latest posts, categories, pages etc.

Also you can select default forum wrapper using this plugin.

Also you can use it to display login link for not logged in user. usually bbpress will say you need to login and not display link or form for login.

bbpress checks for ‘bbpress.php’, ‘forum.php’, ‘page.php’, ‘single.php’, ‘index.php’ files in your theme directory. uses first file that exists in this order.

You can copy your index.php as bbpress.php and make changes on it.

I don’t want to have anything to do with all the theme files mixed up with the plugin, there is just way to much going on there that I don’t want in my theme.

Is there anyway to just add two little files to your existing theme, one that lists (paginated) all threads, and then obviously the single thread page? I don’t want it to automatically add any links, breadcrumbs, post date, tags, or anything else. If I don’t add it myself, I don’t want it to be on the page, just the way WordPress itself works.

I just installed the bbpress plugin and it seems to work great. I am working on stylizing it to match my site. How do I get it to use a specific page template for the forums? Can I make the forums pull into a specific page that I create and then set a page template?

Hi Begis,

Your 1) solution isn’t really an option. The automatic updating mechanism from WordPress will overwrite the whole plugin’s folder. And trading automatic update for manual… well, it’s likely that some time someone will run the automatic by mistake.

The 2) solution sounds good, but I guess it involves quite some work to develop the plugin ?

Does anyone knows if the WordPress team has some guidelines, I’m too new to plugin development to know, and I didn’t seem to find anything.

Is there anybody who can clarify whether there is a method of installing and/or setting up the bbPress plugin to access the blog and forum separately via virtual /blog and /forum subfolders respectively, having physically installed WordPress files in domain.com/wp subfolder?
