I made a custom import for minibb.

    Cool πŸ™‚

I just did my first test import and it took like 12 hours to finish.

How big is your forum? (i.e. number of topics and replies)

Now I want to know if it’s possible to import only the latest post, topics etc instead of doing a complete import when I want to go live?

No it is not, my suggestion would be to copy your database and then cut it down to only the topics & replies you want to import directly with MySQL

And here is my ‘work in progress’ bbPress miniBB.php importer πŸ™‚ https://gist.github.com/ntwb/7889409 πŸ™‚

EDIT: I should add that mine has a few issues and I know it doesn’t quite work πŸ™
If you have some tips to fix mine up that would be great as we could then include it in bbPress.

I’d suggest you create yourself a test user and go from there:

Do this with all your plugins disabled except bbPress, BuddyPress and bbPress Advanced Capabilities, I’m also presuming you are not also using S2/Members or any other plugin of this type.

    * Sign up as a new user just as a new user would
    * Now as ‘admin’ check the user role & caps via bbPress Advanced Capabilities (Should be none)
    * Logout & Login as this new user
    * Now as ‘admin’ check the user role & caps via bbPress Advanced Capabilities(Should now be Participant)

    Hi

I posted here last week, but for some reason my post didn’t appear, so trying again.

I am running bbpress 2.5.1 Buddypress 1.8.1 and WordPress 3.7.1 and having problems finding documentation to support getting my forums (or are they now called groups) to work at http://www.thehouseofdog.co.uk/groups/

No one seems able to post a new topic, not even me. The forums are not clear, you have to select the forums tab to get them up (and then they’re empty because no one can create a new topic) and I just need to know where I can find a manual to set this all up.

I spent 3 hours last Friday trying to find out why the ‘forums’ tab wasn’t displaying in my dashboard, only to discover I’d been looking for something which obviously doesn’t show in the latest bbpress version (but the documentation says it does).

Can someone please help me? I’ve never used wordpress, buddypress or bbpress before and I really need a manual which is up to date!

    Thanks

Hello – new to this forum.

I have just started using bbPress (WordPress plugin), and I see that the ‘Freshness’ is incorrect for my test forum (localhost). The topic and post dates are in fact correct (when you go to the post, look at WP Admin, the post dates are accurate), but ‘Freshness’ is completely incorrect.

For now, I am developing my own Freshness algorithm, and will include it via theme compatability. I just wanted to add feedback that there seems to be a problem w ‘Freshness’ that would benefit from a fix.

    Thanks. –Bill

When I go to post as anonymous, in the field where you put your website address I see: Array. Check pick Below:

I’m using the latest bbPress. I’m not sure, but I think this started after the last update.

So I’ve been trying to debug this problem for about a month and finally decided to try and get some extra help. Here’s a summary of what’s going on.

When a user clicks Edit, they are brought to a page that’s showing the excerpt for the reply, with a Continue Reading button. No editing can be done. Regular topics can be edited as expected, but replies are pulling from my post loop it seems.

Here’s what the topic looks like: http://imm.io/1lH2h

Here’s what happens when I try to edit my first post / topic post: http://imm.io/1lH2t

Here’s what happens if I try to edit a reply: http://imm.io/1lH2y

The website is lootpalace.com – I’ve got a dev clone readily available for testing ideas out on.

Does anyone know where to begin looking for something like this? The theme’s creator is MIA (Huddle theme from Themeforest), and if I knew which files to begin digging through, I might be able to fix it on my own.

    I’m using WordPress 3.7.1
    I’m using BuddyPress 1.8.1
    I’m using bbPress 2.4.1

I can provide more information upon request, would appreciate any help or general finger pointing to get me in the right direction. Thanks!

I just jumped on this forum thread since it’s asking of a feature I’d like to use and the voices has to go (sorry developers) but none works but moves the other columns around and hidden doesn’t do anything on my live site (on the contrary with my test site) which should have been live again three hours ago but now is not launchable in it’s full due to this glitch

I open up this topic. I used the code snippet above and it worked like a charm on my test site but now on my live site it’s either ugly line up – which I guess is the reason for @elpju to change from none to hidden in the first place.

However hidden does not respond for my code πŸ™ None does and that’s where they ugly breaking up of layout shows and with hidden there’s absolutely nothing happening.

    Hi

Having never used bbpress before and being relatively new to wordpress, I’m struggling to get the forums on my site up and running.

Having spent 3 hours today just looking for the ‘forums’ tab, I eventually worked out that the reason I couldn’t find it was because in the latest version of buddypress (or bbpress?) there is no ‘forums’ tab – it is named ‘Groups’ instead! It seems the documentation on here is outdated and this has caused me no end of agro today aggggh!

Now I finally worked that out, and the forums option magically somehow appeared in my individual ‘groups’, I’m now unable to make a post in any groups, even when logged in as a keymaster!

Can anyone help me with this? I don’t even know where to find up to date documentation for this plugin now, everything I’ve read is outdated and has confused me. Can anyone point me in the direction of a place to find documentation for bbpress 2.5.1, when running with buddypress 1.8.1 on wordpress 3.7.1? Or just help me to get these forums useable!

Also, is there a way to allow forum users to add photos to their posts?

    Thanks

    Hi,

I do have a similar issue, probably related, maybe clears things up for testing.
I also have the .even class every where.

A new reply from a user/participant goes directly under the original first post/topic,
even when there are already replies made, which I guess happens when using the bottom reply form, since that is there to reply to the original post.
When the admin edits that reply it goes to the bottom.

When anybody (user or admin) uses the reply link in a post/reply the reply goes directly under the post replied to and stays there even after an admin edit.
Issue I have with that is it is not clear it was a reply to a reply, maybe should go to the right a bit or something or change backgroundcolor or add ‘REPLY TO: at the top of the reply.

I just installed this plugin and I went through these steps

Step by step guide to setting up a bbPress forum – Part 1

and I can’t get the list of forums to show up on the forum page.

I named the page forum and then I also tried adding the extra code as outlined in step 2 [bbp-forum-index] but neither create a list of the forums that I have created. I have two set up.

    http://massagepracticebuilder.com/forums/

This is one of the forums I set up just to test. http://massagepracticebuilder.com/forums/forum/diy-websites/

And why does that have the address forums/forum ??

I just went and followed the directions to set up a forum.
    thanks

Help! I’ve been at this for hours and am going out of my mind…

I have the latest of everything, bbpress, buddypress and have deactivated all plugins except for buddypress, bbpress, members and akismet. I actually even deleted and reinstalled buddypress, bbpress and members. I deactivated my theme and am using the default buddypress one.

The site is visually a mess: http://www.tafaforum.com/

I am the only one who can post on the forums. Everything was fine until yesterday when several plugins updated, including bbpress. I had also been mucking around with trying to get a tinymce plugin to work for the forums.

If I disable everything and just have bbpress, I can post (as a fake member). Add buddypress, and I get a “You cannot reply to this topic” message at the bottom.

I messed around with roles and have enabled everything possible that could contribute to this, but the one thing that I notice is that the members all have an author role for their wordpress roles (as I want them to post on our blog), and even though they all show participant for their forum roles on the Users Page, when I go into the settings for the roles, I only see the author role as having any users, not the participant one.

Yes, this could be a buddypress or members issue, but bbpress is the one that had the latest update, so I figure that the problem starts here. If not, please send me where I need to go….

Akismet was the culprit for me. My test topics were called “Test 1,” “Test 2” etc and I guess it didn’t like that. I disabled the “Allow Akismet to actively prevent forum spam” option and Voila, notifications returned. Strangely, the topics still posted. Seems Akismet just keboshed the notifications. I also tested the subforum notifications and they worked also. I’ll post more if I find that other factors exist, but for right now looks like it works.

Hi 3tonine/Rachel – As a followup, make sure to have the latest version of the bbPress Enable TinyMCE Visual Tab plugin. I’m using WP 3.7.1, bbPress 2.5.1 with TinyMCE Advanced 3.5.9. I had to use bbPress Enable TinyMCE Visual Tab 1.0.1 in order for it work properly, and this doesn’t appear to be available yet from the WordPress Plugin Directory.

    More info: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/not-working-in-bbpress-24

Regardless, thanks for the pointers to all the bits/bobs, once I got the correct versions it works great.

I agree that a fully-functioning visual editor with feature parity to WordPress would be great to see. In fact, I would like to see it be made a very high priority as forum users certainly have come to expect a WYSIWYG editor. To me, this feature trumps any other as it has the greatest effect on users and their ability to post.

Either the problem is difficult to fix or the main developers do not agree a great visual editor is very important because it has been disabled by default since April, which surprises me a bit. When it initially was disabled I figured it would be a temporary thing and would be back for 2.4, and now work is being done on 2.6 without mention of this. :/

    Holly,

bbPress will work out of the box for most implementations. How much you then customise it is up to you.

Typically you might want to change a little of the styling – that depends on how much styling your existing site has – There wasn’t a link to your existing site in your original post.

Then you might wish to alter some layout – although the default is pretty standard

    The documentation

    Codex

will show you what you need to do to set up, and if you already have wordpress, then you could see how well bbPress would suit you in a couple of hours by following the set up guide and creating some test forums.

Hello, I installed the plugin bbpress, adding a forum page, inserted the shortcode, but my forum is a vertical list, I would like to appear as a horizontal blocking like normal forums. Anyone know how to do this? I use the responsive theme, but i tested with other themes and it does the same exact thing. a little assistance would be cool, for i am thoroughly frustrated.
    My website = places2bee.com

I’m not sure but I’m guessing this is not an intended effect or am I wrong? The voice count works as expected until one uses the forum repair tool and performs a Count voices in each topic which then excludes the guest topics and replies from the voice count. Also tested on a new bbPress install with other plugins disabled.

    I’m using WordPress 3.7.1. and bbPress 2.5
I’m not sure but I think this only came up around the time I upgraded to bbPress 2.5

Thanks Steve! Here’s my latest reply on that same thread: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/anyone-supporting-this-plugin-help-w-discussions?replies=28#post-4951643. Giving up on the migration and sending the client to GROU.PS in the meantime since they will migrate Ning data (including forums). Then start 100% fresh with our beloved bbPress and BuddyPress.

    Two things:

    1. At this stage Moderators will NOT be able to see the ‘forums’ section in the backend eg. /wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=forum no matter what you try, this is the known bug.
    2. The ONLY way moderators can create new forums is by filling out the fields and clicking submit using the shortcode [bbp-forum-form]
    3. So no matter what you/we do a moderator will not see the forums in the backend.

That said your moderator user should have had no problems creating forums via the [bbp-forum-form] form.

As I said I tested this myself before posting above. Can you create a new user, login as that user, logout and log back in is admin (or via separate browsers etc).

Did this user get the role ‘participant’ assigned to them after they logged in the first time?

Now promote the user to a ‘Moderator’ and visit the page you created with the shortcode ‘[bbp-forum-form]‘ and fill in and submit the form.

      How’d wee go?

    Hello again Stephen,

    so here is what happens…

    SHORTCODE SOLUTION
I inserted the [bbp-forum-form] shortcode and can see a forum creation form while logged is as KeyMaster. However, once logged in as “Moderator” I only get the following message

    You cannot create new forums.

    PLUGIN APPROACH
I installed the suggested plugin (which is very straight forward and easy to use BTW) Advanced user capability editing for bbPress.

Even though options are all set appropriately, the “Forum” menu will not display as long as the user is a “moderator”.

In order to be as thorough as possible, here are the tests I ran :

    • Changed moderator’s WP user role to each available option (subscriber -> admin) and tested every time
    • Used plugin’s reset to defaults button (essentially disabled everything)
    • Added options to enable creating and editing forums

What i noticed is that the “Topics” and “Replies” menus react to BBpress user-role settings whereas the “Forum” menu does not. This might seem logical, but in my mind it validates the fact that BBpress roles are not entirely overridden or broken.

I am currently using GoDaddy hosting for another site, which allows for 1GB of a mySQL database but I am not sure if that will be enough

That indeed will be more than enough, if you needed 100 times your requirements then maybe some more accurate testing would be required.

Typically with web hosts when you find you are nearing your file and/or database storage limits you will receive a notification from them which would typically include details on how to seamlessly upgrade your site with increased storage for the relevant file or db storage.
