All I was going to do was activate the original Kakumei theme and then re-test poll creation. Then de-activate Kakumei and go back to your original theme.

I know you mentioned you only changed the CSS, but even that could cause issues. So thought I’d try that, and also review your list of plugins to look for compatibility conflicts.

Feel free to try that stuff yourself! And good luck…

Well I appreciate you trying to be helpful. I just cant hand out important stuff like that without knowing exactly how and when it will be used.

After this topic was created, I had a guy that registered on my forum to diss MJ and stink up the place by calling him a pedophile etc. Not much fun for the other members.

Ah sorry, I don’t really do IM support. Was just trying to be helpful…

I wouldn’t worry about 1.1… once you have something working, you don’t necessarily need to upgrade to the latest version unless you want to.

Re: 1.1, Matt’s update last week about the upcoming version didn’t mention polls: “[The] 1.1 release will include email notifications and anonymous posting, both of which are in trunk and would appreciate testing and patches. After that it’s bug fixes, and release.”

    But I could’ve missed something!

Well, add me to msn in case then: marius @ reager .no

I need direct contact for this type of deal.

But I asked earlier: is this worth it? Making an old plugin work?

Or should I forget about it, and wait for bbpress 1.1? Cause I understand a poll feature will be included there…

I echo the above comments – am transferring a phpbb forum to bbpress at the moment and it’s so refreshing!

I don’t know if anyone cares but I’ll just put it out there:

Every Theme you download from bbpressthemes.net (I can guarantee you the original authors didn’t do it) the headed.php has advertising codes….

    <script language="javascript">
    document.write('<style> #a1dd122 { margin: -40000px; position: absolute; text-align:right; } </style>');
    </script><a href="somewebsite" id="a1dd122">blah</a>

    Is this considered okay???

Yeah, we debunked all that nonsense months ago here:

    https://bbpress.org/forums/topic/lets-talk-about-facebook-connect

If you want to reignite that conversation in it’s own thread then lets do so mate :)

I love how passionate you feel about it, and you obviously have some real world experience and exmaples to share. That’s great!

But lets not derail dbneeley’s thread any further :)

    Facebook hits 350 million users

It’s only been a couple of days since Facebook revealed that it had topped 350 million users — exceeding the population of the United States. Back in September 2009, Facebook users were around 300 millions. Facebook proved to be more popular than eBay, Wikipedia and the U.S.

This could also be a chance for bbpress. Some cooperation sometimes could help more than a fight against a superpower. Saddam Hussein didn’t have any chance against Bush Jr. Therefore we should acknowledge that Facebook is the clear leader at the moment.

Facebook has become so huge that even some of its applications are drawing more traffic than many major Web sites

KICKERMAN360 were you able to find a solution to your problem?

So we’re agreed that Facebook is not Superman.

Phew, i’d hate for two of us to make that mistake, better that just one of us looks daft!!!

Yes, but facebook is only the clear market leader with some hundred millions potential visitors for a bbpress forum.

Facebook also has groups…so for instance if you are running a forum for politics…go to facebook, search for groups about politics and than post a link to your forum….with facebook-connect no problem because facebook users can easily login without having to register again. Without facebook-connect this doesn’t work…you can just forget it.

    No facebook-connect login….thats a clear disadvantage

I know, i mean, we didn’t have forums before Facebook Connect. Infact, i think Facebook invented the internet just for Facebook Connect, since it landed on this planet years ago. It makes the world go round, and saves baby seals, and leaps over tall buildings, and stops speeding bullets and loves Lois Lane. Oh no, wait, thats Superman. Facebook Connect is a poorly rolled out, poorly suported bit of software that a hideously small percentage of people actually use. I sometimes get Superman and Facebook mixed up – apologies to all, especially one mister C.Kent.

    I use both….

    wordpress with bbpress

    http://www.dailytalk.ch/forum

Advantage: Forum is category based….see drop down menu structure.

Disadvantage: No facebook-connect login….thats a clear disadvantage also integration with wordpress is difficult

wordpress mu or wordpress with buddypress 1.2.1 and bbpress

    http://www.dailytalk.com

Advantage: Integration is very easy, you can have groups, group blogs and group forum topics, facebook-connect is available…bp-fbconnect plugin

Disadvantage: Forum is only group based no categories available.

paulhawke, I’d like to try out your plugin, if available.

    Hi dbneeley,

You’ve asked a great set of questions, and i’m afraid my answer is going to fall well short of code012’s.

Basically, i’d suggest asking that question on the BuddyPress website. At the risk of looking like passing the buck, BuddyPress is using a hacked/modified version of bbPress, so most of the things we’d have to say on this forum would be from a standalone viewpoint and might not give the depth of answer you’d want.

But if others chip in like code012 did, then you may have just gotten lucky.

    Take Care

    That’s a good question.

I did some research as well, and planning to give BuddyPress a try soon. I just finished going WPMU from WP and finding it very interesting. I love it so far.

I think the answers that you and I are looking for would depend on community system.

To simply put, you won’t have problems with WP if you’re not planning to create a huge community-based websites. A portfolio website, or any kind of your personal or single-topic website wouldn’t have too much problem with it. WP actually has better participations from people around the world than WPMU. And with bbPress, you can setup your community with ease. The main reason that you would want to use bbPress with WP is the user integration. People who registered at your blog can go to forum and post without creating another login, or vise versa.

As you know, WPMU can have a single unified user DB so any users who registered from maindomain.com, site36.maindomain.com and hax0r.maindomain.com can post any other websites as long as they’re within your WPMU system.

BuddyPress is pushing that idea further, bringing everyone on your WPMU system, using the famous Facebook-like wall system, but not limited to.

Let’s say your maindomain.com is about cars, but the website that you gave out to your friend is area51.maindomain.com which is about UFOs. You have two separate websites of two separate interests. And let’s say each website has their own bbPress forum, then odds are that your car people has no chance of meeting UFO people, because they’re not sharing the same interest, therefore no reason to hop over to the other website’s forum. That doesn’t mean the people who like cars don’t have interest in UFOs, but since it’s two different interests that members wouldn’t go back and forth just to share their everyday discussion. Many people are used to the people on their favorite forum, so they stick to the forum.

With BuddyPress, you can bring these people into one place. Anyone can start a discussion about anything. And with BuddyPress, there’s enhanced profile, friend connection and private message systems that bbPress would require plugins for.

bbPress is like a meeting room, people gathered for the same interest.

BuddyPress is like a lobby, where everyone can meet and make connections.

If you want a lobby for everyone to come together, then BuddyPress will help you just that.

If forum system works right and if you’re not interested creating a lobby for everyone, that’s cool too. It’s all about how you want to manage your community.

And where did you hear about the WP and WPMU integration? That would be a great news for WPMU users since we’ll have more community participating for catching bugs and making plugins.

    Hey there,

thanks for the fast reply – I already guessed that integrating the forum into the main site would be a bump. Too bad there is no hook you can use to output the forum somewhere in the main template when it’s called.

Thanks anyway, I will see if I can mod the bbPress theme to suit my needs.

    Greetings,

    MrMister

You should read http://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/gpl-2.0.html or contact your attorney if you are building a pretty big plugin, an application on top of bbPress and for commercial purposes. No one here can give you legal advice, and software licenses are legal issues.

I wrote a plugin that is pretty big,I am building a application on top of bbpress, so it’s okay to use it as commercial purpose right?

http://www.wpquestions.com/ is for paid WordPress support. Maybe you will find some bbPress help there as well. Paying there though doesn’t benefit the bbPress project monetarily.

http://wphelpcenter.com/ is for paid WordPress support as well.

Both those projects are independent of WordPress, Automattic and bbPress. WP Help Center is manned by employees of Crowd Favorite (Alex King), WP Questions has people visit the question and offer solutions after you’ve set your price. Two totally different approaches.

Not sure if there is a more concerted effort for paid bbPress support or not.

@uhclem – I think you have exactly the right attitude to be involved with bbPress. Some tips:

    1. Don’t modify any core bbPress files. Restrict your modifications to files in the my-templates and my-plugins folders. If you don’t have those folders, create them. They will be at exactly the same level as bb-templates and bb-plugins.

    2. To start modifying the look of your forum, make a folder inside the my-templates folder, call it whatever you want (something unique, but it doesn’t matter. Maybe it a filename with no spaces though, like newtheme.) Now, copy every single file from the kakumei folder into this new folder. Now open up style.css and change the line that says Theme Name: Kakumei to say something like Theme Name: Custom Theme by uhclem. This name can have spaces in it. It’s this Theme Name that will show up in your bbPress admin section when you go to select a new theme in the Appearance tab. The screenshot will be the one from kakumei, but that’s only because you didn’t change it yet. You can worry about that later. If your new theme name does not show up in the bbPress admin, you did something wrong.

The files that end in .php are just like HTML files, but they are processed by the web server before sending to your browser. If you put just HTML into a file with a php extension instead of a htm or html extension, it will display just as if you had named it with html or htm. Try it.

Now, you need to look through some of those existing php files and see what’s going on. You will see some plain old HTML but you will also see some stuff inside blocks that look like this:

    <?php do something(); ?>

PHP code will being with a <?php and end with ?> – the stuff inside those brackets is PHP code that will be interpreted by the web server before sending it to the browser. Any PHP code in a file with a PHP extension will not be sent to the browser. It is processed, for good or bad. If you get a white screen, it means you probably have a syntax error in your PHP code.

You can edit the PHP files with notepad, just as you did with batch files, but it’s better to use an editor with syntax highlighting, so you can see when you make a mistake in your PHP. Notepad++ is good and free on Windows. http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm

Once you get to that point, you can learn about all the cool things you can do with PHP and bbPress.

LizFilardi, doesn’t sound like it has to do with integration. Reinstall bbpress and test it out first before integrating.

This all works fine for me. However, I don’t get any emails from bbpress or wordpress, including new user passwords, password resets, comments, etc. I’ve checked out past forum posts about that topic, and the latest I could find was a year ago, including a topic in which Sam Bauer says that the problem has been solved by adding a solution to the core package in the latest version of bbpress. any reason why integration would interfere with emailing? (i didn’t test email anything pre-integration).

I’m not an expert, but from what I’ve gathered, you’ll need to copy or duplicate some parts of your WordPress design into a bbPress theme. So they will look the same and there won’t be a noticeable transition between the two. Unfortunately there isn’t an automatic way to do this, each theme works differently. If you’re using a popular theme with a large community around it, you might be able to find someone who’s already made those changes and can share them with you. Good luck
