I completely agree things could be improved.

I’m just not sure how much of that is on bbPress and how much of that is on Akismet.

On bbPress.org one of the major problems we run into is the majority of the spam is from human spammers – so no matter what reCaptcha/human test (etc) is in place they will get around this.

Some of the plugins (such as https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bbpressmoderation/) try to get around this where a user must have a previously approved post before their posts show up.

You’re doing it exactly backwards to accomplish what you want to do.

You do *not* “need” a page with the slug “forum” or “forums” to make your forums appear. They will just work, based on the slug you set in Settings > Forums.

If you want the index of your “forums” to show “forums” then it’s slug needs to be “forums” and not “forum”

If a WordPress page has the same slug as something else (“forums”), the page wins.

(If your forum archive slug in Settings > Forums is “forums” but you have a page with the slug “forums” then the page will appear and it will be whatever the_content of that page is.)

You can have an unlimited number of permutations on the forums to look and work. It comes with the most obvious (and working) settings out of the box.

You can include slashes in your archive slugs, so hierarchical pages work, too.

This part is not broken, it is not a bug. It’s two settings that you need to make match, and you’re in control of both of them on your own to operate however you want your site to operate.

I’m the author of bbP Genesis Extend and bbP Custom CSS.

For bbP Custom CSS, you will need to create the CSS it will use.

    https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bbpress-custom-css-file/installation/

Unfortunately re-ordering the columns would require creating a custom theme, it’s not something that can be done with a CSS solution.

In reply to: BBpress will continue?

bbPress is very much under active development. You can see that in the trac timeline – https://bbpress.trac.wordpress.org/timeline.

The spam periodically gets to a high level on the forums because

    1) There are only a handful of moderators at the moment

    2) The spam is human generated and most of it does not get caught by akismet

    Hope that helps :)

Hi everyone! I’m new to BBPress and I’m quite the technology newbie, so please be as simple and specific as possible when answering my question otherwise I’m liable to not get it :)

Here goes: I have WordPress and installed BBPress. I have the Piano Black theme. My site is called Pro Football Chick (profootballchick.com/forums if you want to see what I’m talking about). Anyhow, I want the forums to have a tab on my front page at the top — like the About, Home, and Contact pages. I also noticed that there’s no way for someone to add a topic — how can I fix that?

    Thank you SO much! :)

@jaredatch I already have recaptcha set up on registration. I’ll check to see if there are other plugins that will assist, but SPAMMERs are actually using humans to do the registration part these days. They’re tenacious.

    @John James Jacoby

It just seems very odd that I’ve had such a huge spike in missed SPAM since switching from the standalone to the plugin.

I was hoping this ticket would make it into 2.1 and help with the issue

What are your hosts using as web hosting control panels? cPanel, vDeck or something else?

Take me as an example (I’m using vDeck 4), in your control panel, navigate to “File Manager” (or similar name). If your install your website in root directory, then navigate to /wp-content/plugins/ and upload your bbPress zip file there. For sub-directory, navigate to /”sub-directory”/wp-content/plugins/ and upload it there. Uncompress the zip file.

In your wordpress dashboard, go to Plugin section. You should see the bbPress in your plugin list. Activate it and you’re done.

Actually there’s an easier way to do this. Navigate to Plugin > Add New. Search for bbPress and click “install now” and activate it.

Do you all know that spammer like to target website with these words (or similar)?

    “Proudly powered by WordPress”

“Proudly powered by WordPress and BuddyPress”

    “Proudly powered by bbPress.”

Just try this in google search: “inurl:/register/ Account Details Proudly powered by WordPress and BuddyPress” and see it for yourself. There’s lot of it.

Yes we’re so “proud” of it until our site is flooded with spammers.

So you may want to remove those words from your footer, etc. You may also want to change the /register/ (in BuddyPress) to something like /gimmeanaccount/.

My site was once flooded by spammers especially from China with the @126.com before I make those changes and I’m pretty amazed with the result.

I don’t think so. The default bbPress works differently compared to BuddyPress Group Forums, (it’s not like bbPress to SimplePress or vice versa) so it would be troublesome to migrate it from one to another one, and I don’t see a reason to create a plugin for that.

You say “hidden forums” don’t work. Can you describe it?

And it’s unfair to say that the bbPress developers stopped updating their plugins. FYI they are currently developing bbPress 2.1 which is still under development and bbPress project is still alive.

You can see it for yourself:

    In reply to: Deleting sidebar

Looks like you ask in the inappropriate place. You should ask this in WordPress or BuddyPress Support Forums.

You’ll need to create a custom page template for those pages, but there’s no easy way to do this unless you have some knowledge about PHP.

For a quick start, you can refer:

    https://codex.wordpress.org/Pages

    To create a page template:

Hi — I’m trying to add BBPress to my WordPress blog. I’m currently running Genesis, Prose theme (although that may change soon). My BBPress version is 2.21+, and I’m also trying to use Genesis Extend (I think successfully) and, at the author’s suggestion, I am trying to use the bbPress Custom CSS File. The immediate thing that I’m trying to do is to rearrange and remove some of the forum column headings. The default is:

    Topic / Voices / Posts / Freshness

I’d like to change that to

    Topic / Posts / Author

And include information in the Topic column about what category it’s in, as well as include Freshness data in the Author column.

Is there an easy way to do this, or is this all CSS Styling? (Or should I try to find a bbPress theme I like?)

The NEXT question then becomes, um… does anyone know where the bbPress Custom CSS File is? I poked around a bit in FTP and couldn’t find it. Do I have to generate it myself and upload it? Do I stick the file in the Prose theme folder, the Genesis theme folder, or the bbPress folder? Or the bbPress Custom CSS File plugin folder?

    Many thanks in advance!

    Hi Guys,

I need help resolving small issue that I have with my installation and I am ready to pay for the time of whoever knows (or can find out) the answer.

To see the problem go: http://www.ibikiniwax.com/forum/topic/jannet and scroll to the bottom of page.

<b>The replies show at below the reply box.</b>

I run bbpress plugin 2.0.2 on one of Template Monster premium themes. WordPress 3.3.2.

I did not do any modifications to bbpress themes (To be honest, I don’t quite understand it) I just installed the plugin, activated it, setup and voila – everything works but this one issue. I suppose it uses the themes css – I like the simplicity of it and I’d rather keep it this way.

So there you go. Please help. Let me know your price before hand. If you feel more comfortable, we can do it through freelancer of elance.

    Thanks

    Hi Sam,

I had a hard time looking for the archive-forums.php, until I found it in the bbp-twentyten theme folder in bbp-themes folder. From my understanding I’m not using this theme for bbPress (or am I?)

I made the changes as you described and nothing takes effect. I’ve tried moving about the archive-forums.php into different areas, my main theme folder, the bbPress includes folder and others to see if I could find the right spot it needed to be in order to be called, but without luck.

Where do I need to place this file in order to have it activated or used by bbPress?

I also tried creating a new ‘theme’ for bbPress following the direction here.. https://codex.bbpress.org/legacy/themes-and-templating/

But it seems to call in my bbPress theme into my main WordPress theme area, and I don’t want to change th WP theme, I just want bbPress to use this file to generate it’s <h1> Title.

Any help would be awesome. Thanks for your time!

Look through the WP.org repo (https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/search.php?q=bbpress) – there are a few plugins that should help with this depending on what method you want to use (such as recaptcha etc).

Does BBpress work with the default wordpress user registration? so if a user is all ready registered to my blog they can use the forum?

    #113386

Do you mean you want a wysiwyg editor in bbpress such as TinyMCE? (Which include bold, italic, etc)

bbPress 2.0 does not comes with a wysiwyg editor. bbPress 2.1 do have a TinyMCE editor, although it’s still under development.

You can try this plugin Rich Text Editor For Comments or Basic Comment Quicktags

The breadcrumb trail at the top of our forums look like this:

About us › Forums › Privat: Our association

“About us” being the title of the page set as our start page in WordPress. Shouldn’t this be the website title instead? How can we change it?

I wonder if anyone can assist me with this problem. I have seen a few posts on the topic suggesting PHP issue like old version. My hosting provider is using 5.3.3, but wordpress says this is fine. Anyway, the issue is I am using the standard RSS feed and getting this message “no items”. When I run via my localhost with the same feed it works just fine? Any ideas? Website is http://www.just-templates.com – RSS feed is in widget on RHS below slider.Cheers in advance for any support.

    Installing Group and Sitewide Forums

Hi, I’m a real wordpress noob. I followed the above instructions step-for-step only to come across this message in the middle of the instructions…

“[Note: You will have to create the link to your sitewide forums page in your custom menu or main navigation. The menu links in the image below were created prior to setting up this tutorial.]”

Now, I need instruction to create the link to my site wide forums page in my custom menu or main navigation.

    Hi…

I’ve added bbpress forums to my WordPress account without any problems, but I want to use a different image header for the forums than for the rest of the site. In which file does bbpress pull the header from my site, and is it simply possible just to plug in a different image into the code instead of it finding my regular header?

    Forums are at http://ovcball.net/forums/

    Thanks!
