    Hello everyone.

    I do realize that Nick’s question was topical more than 6 years ago, but still want to share one more way of moving phpBB content over to bbPress. Probably, someone will find it useful.

    I personally always try to avoid manual actions, because there’s a risk to miss something important, moreover, if a forum is scalable.

    That’s why I do suggest going the automated migration route and use forum migration service for that.
    Here’s what I found – https://cms2cms.com/cms/supported-cms/phpbb-to-bb-press-migration/. Quite naturally, that the migration will need some custom edits, but I do know that the cms2cms tech team can investigate any migration case and do some additional settings.

    According to the video tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sobBd64J_ro it really looks quite simple. At least, Free Demo is worth trying, I guess.

    Hello,

    Yes it will always be the same image.
    Members of my old phpBB forum that I am remaking on bbPress are familiar with this image that I want to reuse on my new bbPress forum.

    When the user clicks on the link it takes them to the last posted message, just as if they were clicking on the date and time.

    Hello all,
    I am in the process of migrating a phpbb forum to a bbpress forum.

    In my phpbb forum, I have a forum for each group of students. and only they can see that forum.
    (about 160 forums)
    also I have a group of admins who can see all forums.

    Is that possible in bbpress?

    Thanks
    Mickey

    Hello Robin,

    in another forum (based on phpBB) they have a very useful feature to keep spammers out: It is not allowed to place links before someone has made 30 postings.

    I suggest that the owner of this forum has made a script himself, because it does not work very good – the error message “Links not yet allowed” appears also when answers with quote are started. But I find the idea very good!

    Do you think that something like this might be implemented in bbPress?

    Best wishes
    Hannelore

    I originally migrated the forums from phpBB, but that was a over a year ago so I would think that would not be relevant anymore. I don’t know what the converter has to do with anything anymore.

    Maybe the ‘phpbb 3.2.9 fix bbpress import’ is broken? I get 404…

    I have some issue about phpBB 3.3.1 import, everything is okay, except the users, the users and password not imported… :/

    Hi,

    I experienced the same issue when I tried to import from latest phpBB forum, the users and the password didn’t come through the import… :/

    Maybe the user related tables changed in the 3.3.x phpBB?

    Bye,
    Gábor Auth

    Hi, I’m curious what plugin you are considering to switch to? I’ve purchased and tested several including trying to get “support” from commercial options, and have not found a very good/comprehensive forum solution with good support. The best forum for wp that I found was simple press but they were bought out a few years ago and since then the support is terrible. Any question will be answered with a pitch to get you to hire them to customize. Before that I tried wpforo but it is lacking a lot of features especially on the admin side and I had problems communicating with their support.

    There just does not seem to exist such a plugin for wordpress that has both good support (either commercial or community) and comprehensive features needed to run an active forum. (I’ve used a bunch of non wp forums such as vb, phpbb, smf etc)

    I’ve come to the conclusion that if you have to use WP and need a forum with comprehensive features and administration tools, then bbpress is the best option and you may need to hire a developer to get it to do what you need. The next option would be a non-wp forum that you could bridge. But again, if you have a legitimate WP forum plugin option to consider, I’d love to hear it.

    Importing from phpBB ver 3.3.1 into bbPress ver 2.6.5 –

    I get a “2. No users to import” warning.
    I also get a loop, “8. Converting anonymous topic authors (100 through 100 of 100)”

    Is anyone able to help? How much do you want?! I have deliberately not included the URL. If you can help I will provide it.

    4000 users will be eternally grateful… (they do exist!)

    Thanks,
    Stewart

    Hi Heroyouwi, I hope you are happy to answer this. I have tried your phpbb 3.2.9 fix bbpress import script and sadly it failed. I am using phpBB 331 and the latest bbPress. What is the likely issue?
    Many thanks.

    I need a little help with the BBpress converter. I am importing data (4000 users) from a phpBB (latest version) database in the locahost database. The converter consistently just goes straight to ‘Stopped’ no matter what I do.

    Where is the log for this utility so I can debug?

    Thanks,
    Stewart

    It is extremely disappointing not to have had any reply to this question. I have reached the point where I have upgraded phpBB to the latest version and moved the original phpBB data to the new server so I can run the import to and from the ‘localhost’, and still it fails. I am 100% confident that everything is correct.
    What really gets me is the lack of feedback. The application just says ‘Stopped’ every time I try something. Every time. Is there a log somewhere?

    If I don’t get some sort of help or guidance soon I will simply give up on BBPress and WordPress. Surely there is someone who knows what’s going on?

    Thank you in anticipation.

    When I run the import utility it immediately stops – I get no feedback or information in the Import Monitor so I have no idea what is failing.
    phpBB version 3.0.11. 10905 posts, 3738 users.
    Site is http://www.70mhz.org/forum.

    Any help or suggestions appreciated.

    Hello,
    I’m trying to migrate an old phpbb 3.0.2 based forum to new bbPress based forum. The default importer gave me errors like “no forums to import” and “no users to import”. I found this importer fix: https://gist.github.com/TheRobotFactory/e8ac4b3dea7920d69f1a959d216f92a3 and it fixed the user import, but still the other stuff (except posts) fail: forums, topics, etc.
    Any known importer fix to be able to import from phpbb 3.0.2?

    @heroyouwi’s fix no longer works. It still picks up the users correctly but no longer imports any topics or forums.

    The phpbb.php file included with 2.6.5 does pick up the topic and forums but misses the users so I merged them.

    here is a version that works with phpBB 3.1.3 and bbPress 2.6.5

    Hello.

    Is it possible to change the appearance of BBPress more towards forum systems like SMF, MyBB, phpBB etc.?
    The appearance of BBPress is very unergonomic compared to these forum scripts.
    Narrow column in the middle, forum preview in the root without separation in lines, font too small etc. etc. etc.

    I would like to use BBPress because it would be integrated in WP.

    Hello.

    I have installed WordPress.

    For testing, also MyBB in /forum.
    I ask myself the question, is BBpress an alternative to extra forum scripts now?
    A few years ago, BBPress was quite rudimentary, wasn’t it? Did this change?
    Can BBpress keep up with all available plugins in the range of functions with forum scripts such as SMF, MyBB, phpBB etc.

    Is there a good clear list of all plugins for BBPress?
    Possibly with usage ranking. There will be a reason if certain plugins are used very often.
    But also curated recommendations.
    The plugin list here is very “simple”.
    21 pages with 10 plugins each, not sortable, no recommendations or rating based on usage (not quality rating) …
    I saw user avatars. But there may be different plugins for the purpose.
    Or a map with the members.
    I don’t know where to start.
    And doesn’t want to try out hundreds of plugins.
    E.g. such an insignificant little thing as using homemade forum icons.

    I currently have many bbPress plugins, and they can add wide range of features that other forum software (like phpBB or similar forums) already have. Check out my other plugins for more information.

    @Milan, thanks for that link. That’s exactly what I’m looking for. The plugin I had was billed as making your site look like phpbb 🙂

    Could someone point me to the plugin link for that plugin that adds the forum stats box that goes on the bottom of the forum, just like most other forums? I know its out there, i just cant remember the name of it. It makes your forum look more like PHPBB or smf.

    Thanks, Richard

    There must be some documentation about how the import works but I can not find any. I’m finding a lot of fixes to scripts but no instructions about where they should go. If anyone can point me in the right direction I’d appreciate it.

    At this point I’m getting the following when I start the import.
    Stopped
    Starting Import…
    Ready to go.

    Thank you

    I’m using WPMultisite 5.4.2 and phpBB 3.2.2
    I’m migrating from withoutsanctuary.org/forum to withoutsanctuary.com
    Theme is twenty-twenty

    BUMP!

    (yes I know this is an almost nine year old thread ;))

    Years ago (before this thread was created) I asked Sam Bauers about how bbPress 0.9 compared to phpBB and he said that bbPress was slower by default, but as soon as you hooked up an object caching backend, that bbPress wooped phpBB quite easily.

    But does anyone have an idea of how the “new” bbPress plugin compares to say phpBB performance wise? Logged out users are easily handled by caching, but what about the logged in folk? With some aggressive object caching, we can tank the number of queries to a minimum and it will run a ton faster, but I have no idea how this compares to the more “standard” forum tools.

    And are there any tricks to making bbPress handle huge forums?

    Let’s say it’s not in the Topic Types section – is there any other plug-in or concept that would allow me to somehow denote specific topics to get a different class? That’s all I’m looking for. We used to do it all the time on regular forums like phpbb – I’m just hoping there is something on this bbpress to mimic that response.

    you can use this code :
    */
    class phpBB extends BBP_Converter_Base {

    /**
    * Main Constructor
    *
    */
    public function __construct() {
    parent::__construct();
    }

    /**
    * Sets up the field mappings
    */
    public function setup_globals() {

    // Setup smiley URL & path
    $this->bbcode_parser_properties = array(
    ‘smiley_url’ => false,
    ‘smiley_dir’ => false
    );

    /** Forum Section *****************************************************/

    // Old forum id (Stored in postmeta)
    $this->field_map[] = array(
    ‘from_tablename’ => ‘forums’,
    ‘from_fieldname’ => ‘forum_id’,
    ‘to_type’ => ‘forum’,
    ‘to_fieldname’ => ‘_bbp_old_forum_id’
    );

    // Forum parent id (If no parent, then 0, Stored in postmeta)
    $this->field_map[] = array(
    ‘from_tablename’ => ‘forums’,
    ‘from_fieldname’ => ‘parent_id’,

    ‘from_fieldname’ => ‘forum_topics’,

    i have a heavy phpbb forum : 16 forums, 3000 topics, 95000 posts, 3000 users, all successfully imported in bbpress 2.5
