What makes you think it was integrated correctly? Did it ever work right?
Maybe bbPress (bb_) got installed into the WordPress (wp_) tables?
@r-a-y
I hope it will turn out to be just how you say. I’ve been deciding for a while now whether to use bbPress or another forum/board software, and can can finally be sure that bbPress is the way to go.
I’ve tried out SMF and phpBB and those two are so complicated and un-user-friendly, there’s no comparison.
I really hope Automattic doesn’t abandon but rather invests its might and power into bbPress.
“Yeah but u can’t have standalone forums in BuddyPress 1.2
They are limited to groups only.”
You can install a standalone bbPress forum and share user database and cookies with BuddyPress quite easy… Just fill the bb-config.php before running the setup.
Ah that’s good!
That means you only need meta information for each Topic… that’s a lot easier to pull off than having meta information for each Post. At least, that was true in 0.9… I think bbPress 1.0 has changed how it handles meta data.
Anyway, you should be able to pretty easily commission a plugin to add an extra field to Topic Meta… it’s definitely technically possible, but a plugin to do this doesn’t yet exist.
Yeah but u can’t have standalone forums in BuddyPress 1.2
They are limited to groups only. Some find it a problem.
Just write the code how you want bbPress to handle passwords (the way your app does) and then put it in functions.php to override the function defined in pluggable file
Thanks for the advice Sam
I think the advice you’ve been given is wrong. Public computers are all setup differently, but very few will have cookies disabled.
If you are worried about peoples security, you can disable the “remember me” checkbox on the login form by just removing it from the theme.
This is in bb-templates/kakumei/login-form.php
In any case, moving from cookies to sessions would be difficult as most of the non-login cookie usage is not setup to be pluggable.
Hi,
Is there a way to to shift bbpress to sessions (temporary cookies) instead of true cookies?
I need the forum to allow people to login on public computers where there are restrictions on cookies and I’ve been told that moving over to sessions will allow this.
Thanks for any advise
Hi everyone
We are starting a weddingforum at our danish site, based on bbpress 1.0 and I would like to hear if any know about a pluging that makes it possible to use smiley`s and allow users to post images into the posts ?
Yup, you can definitely repost derivative works. Oh and also – if you click the “subscribe to topic” link at the top of the page, that should give you email alerts!
I would love to help you test… just let me know! One of my main goals is to figure out how to turn off TinyMCE in mobile browsers… so my users can comment from their iPhones and Android browsers.
Sorry guys this forum really needs a notify on reply via Email function.
So GPL derivative means I can repost derivative works? Its not that crazy different from his code but hacked up quite a bit to compensate for the differences between BBPress and WP.
I will try to clean up the plugin a little bit before release since it has some serious custom code that I need ot cut out since it wont work on another site. The template is up to you to edit away but you will need to know a little bit about how BBPress templates work.
I will try to get something for you guys soon. Anybody want to volunteer to test it out?
Is there a file called config.php in the bbpress directory or one directory UP? Either of those two things will stop the installer. If you find one, temporarily rename that file and start the installation again.
I’m thinking about using bbpress, however, I would need an additional field when posting a message. There is the Title field, the post box to type your message, and a tags box to type tags/keywords, but I also want to have an additional, custom field. Is there a plug in for this, or would this be easy to add? How would it be done? I want the extra field to all a user to enter in a URL.
Well, I’ve been using phpbb for some time, and as WordPress is so good, I’ve decided to give bbPress a try. And as phpbb is full of spams I just can’t handle… well…
I’ve read the installation instruction, and check if it has the requirements… and it has. So uploaded the bbPress to my directory and when try to run the installer:
“An old config.php file has been detected in your installation. You should remove it and run the installer again. You can use the same database connection details if you do.”
What I’ve tried to to:
Delete the “bb-config-sample.php”
Rename the “bb-config-sampl.phpe” to “bb-config.php”
Nothing happens. Still the same message. Does anyone know how to help me?
Thank you,
Newton Uzeda
Hi John,
Uploading a fresh WP install along with BuddyPress, thanks for the tip.
Gene
It might be fixed, but I wouldn’t wait for that day to make the search better on your site.
I turned off the search on one of my forums because it was so bad and frequently irrelevant. I wonder if a Google CSE would be a better fit if your forum relies heavily on search?
http://www.google.com/cse/
For searching this forum here, I usually search google like site:bbpress.org/forums/ whatever – but that relies on the content already having been indexed by Google. I’m not usually trying to find something from the past few days; usually it’s something I remember specifically but can’t remember who wrote it or when. If I search for these forums for the phrase, with Google, I typically find it.
Sorry, forgot to mention that it’s a bbPress install integrated with WP (no “deep” integration).
Thanks for the link, it seems to be a common problem, I wonder if it’ll be fixed in a future release…
Cheers,
Gene
As for the bbPress canonical plugin, I think that is a ways away.
But I just checked, and the latest version of BuddyPress does actually work with WordPress 2.9!
https://buddypress.org/blog/news/introducing-buddypress-1-2/
“the BuddyPress team has added the ability to install bbPress from inside of WordPress”
I wish that Automattic would have done the same for the stand-alone version of WP 2.9, after all, there are more single installs of WP than there is of BuddyPress and MU.
I saw that there’s a bbPress canonical plugin in the works but I wonder what the ETA is…
Gene
Is this for BuddyPress or bbPress?
For bbPress, search is a weak point.

Thanks gerikg!
I’ve been struggling with this aspect since I lost my WordPress virginity 3 weeks ago.
Wp 2.9.2
bb 1.0.2
PHP 5
all www’s removed
I had tried everything I could find in the forum and new I was getting close when I could log on to Wp but not BB and vice versa. Then I found this thread followed gerikg’s instructions and could then log on to Wp and go into Dashboard, but when I visited the site, it showed me as logged off Wp and logged on to BB.
I then moved define( ‘COOKIEPATH’, ‘/blog/’ ); from BELOW define cookies to LINE 16 and still the same. Finally I changed cookie path to define( ‘COOKIEPATH’, ‘/’ ); and now I can log in or out of either Wp or BB and it logs me in/out of the other so I am very happy to have resolved finally but will proceed with caution when the next upgrade comes along.
It should be noted that bbPress Integration suggested define( ‘COOKIEPATH’, ‘/blog/’ );
Also note that I couldn’t get the keys to lock as described in gerikg’s notes but all keys definately the same in both xx-config.php’s
Finally, it was a nightmare and almost gave up but as someone already said I did learn a lot. Thanks
