In reply to: bbPress Facebook page

Well, I’m not missing the point of final products, but WordPress is at version 2.7 and isn’t quite a final product either. The result of the community driven open source product is that pre 1.0 alpha/beta software isn’t really any more or less stable than the next “stable” version, because even if development stops for a moment to celebrate the next milestone, there is still more to do.

I also get how bbPress was introduced and how the developers have chosen to support it. I just disagree with promoting a product before it’s even usable. I guess I take more pride in my product than that. I run the trunk version of both WP and BBP on a relatively small website. I update them nightly. It’s really the best way for me to stay involved and report back problems. I just feel this integration issue is way more important than the attention it gets. It just seems to me like it’s never really worked right ever. :/

And I also choose personally to not believe that just because a product is graciously delivered to someone for free, that there aren’t certain expectations placed on the quality of that product. I could give someone a cookie, but if it’s stale or poisoned doesn’t really make me a good friend.

Also, the last thing I want to do is bite the hand that feeds me. I really love bbPress and WordPress, promise. I just find the development cycle frustrating some days.

(Off topic: We’ve called animal control, the police, and the condo association. The police say they can’t give her a ticket if she isn’t home, and when she’s home the dog doesn’t bark so they can’t ticket her then either. They’re useless. Animal control told me that if I do not have proof of cruelty in terms of the dog not having adequate food and water, they will not pursue the owner. The condo association is writing her their third letter asking her to correct the issue. Writing a letter is less effective than posting on a forum. ;) )

I have no use for facebook myself but johnjamesjacoby I think you are missing the point that bbPress is not even a 1.0 final product yet and should not be used on projects if that can’t deal with bugs and problems. You should never install a pre-1.0, alpha or beta product unless you can handle bugs.

bbPress like WordPress was not developed for the heck of it to give out for free, it was written for WordPress.com and just happens to have free source available.

(and you need to call animal control if there’s a dog barking for that long, most towns have anti-noise ordinances to protect you from that kind of annoyance)

I believe it’s not a registered trademark. The small caps style is to match WordPress. I’m going to have to consult with Matt Thomas (Automattic Designer) at some stage.

I don’t think the the BB in bbPress should ever be small caps. Always lowercase. Looks better.

    +1

Looks worse this way, IMO. I like the little bb. Is bbPress a trademark like WordPress is (capitalization included)? If so, then there’s no question. It needs to be little bb.

I wonder if there is a WordPress.org theme make-over in the works to celebrate the new admin panel?

The new theme should match the WordPress.org theme but in dark greens so we have a common identity.

Currently I have a website, let’s say mydomain.com which is currently a WordPress site (for now, more on that in a sec). I have successfully installed and been running bbPress at a subdomain: forums.mydomain.com. So far everything is hunky dory. Except that now I want to dump the WP part of the site and replace it with something homegrown (I no longer have a need for a blog-based website). The website is going to be for a streaming radio station. What I would like to be able to do is integrate bbPress to leverage the users/logins, so that those who are registered can login and make requests.

Building the PHP/templates for the site isn’t the problem, but what would be the best way to get to the necessary bbPress objects/database/”stuff” so that I can 1) tell if the user is logged in and 2) who they are (so that I can track for request reasons). If I was integrating with WP, I’d use one the WP-integration options, but since I’m not, I’m not sure how to go about performing this. Actually that’s not entirely true… I guess what I really want to ask is, if my bbPress is in one folder linked to a subdomain, what do I need to include from another folder to get to bbPress user info from the main domain.

    I hope this made sense.

I’m now going through the WP and BB integration FAQ and it seems there is no option for BB in webroot and WP in a subdir listed there: https://bbpress.org/forums/topic/wordpress-and-bbpress-integration-101#post-17412

Could this be wrong? Something to do with cookies? But then the BB homepage gives these errors, so I’m not even trying to log in…

Oh, so true! So true! That’s what she keeps me around for ;) nice new Gravatar, BTW.

I’m afraid I do qualify for too many of the “Granny” points – large fonts, too many cats, health problems, etc. LOL!

But I bet your granny can’t write PHP or javascript so that makes me feel better somehow… ;-)

Changes are in trunk of WPMU to help sort out the cookie sharing problem there.

    https://trac.mu.wordpress.org/ticket/809

A lot of the use of config settings in all these solutions are a bit heavy handed, most of these settings are done automatically and you only need to copy them to your bb-config file once you are happy with them.

    #69587

Oh, eh, that’d do it! I flipped mine to Granny Mode (sorry, _ck_, it’s what I use for my gran with glaucoma) and I reproduced it. Huh. Better check my layout for that too!

Maybe it’s because I use the “large fonts” setting in Windows.

That makes my fonts like 10-20% bigger.

Deadpan110, your procedure worked perfectly for me. I have WordPress 2.6.5 and bbpress 1 alpha 2.

I didn’t know what to put into Secret_Key and Secret_Salt.. I assumed they referred to: Secret and Auth_Salt in WP 2.6.5

And it works great! Now let’s see what happens with 2.7!

I don’t see any ads (and I block them too).

Immelody, I would suggest making the border around the login info boxes (for name and password) darker. I almost missed where they were and wondered how people logged in :)

Are there ads or something like that holding the column in place? Because I block most ads and that might be it.

FF3 on XP looks perfectly fine for me too.

The state the trunk is in right now needs a great deal more bug reports – I find at least one new problem every time I try it because they keep changing chunks of code that are critical with backwards compatibility.

You don’t want to unleash it as a regular release in that state, even as an alpha, because despite my constant warnings and explanations, people use the alpha on live, active sites, usually because they absolutely have to use the very newest WordPress despite it’s bloat and bugs.

I’m fairly certain there will be another alpha release before the end of the year though.

If you know how to use SVN then you can help contribute with quality bug reports on TRAC.

In FF3 or IE7 it does not look like _ck_ saw at all. Looks fine to me.

@Nipon: I had that plug-in installed at one point also, but I’m not sure if it is the culprit or not. I actually installed it hoping that it would pick up on the bbPress roles but it didn’t.

If you integrate by modifying the config.php files, you won’t be able to access the bbPress admin regardless of where you login from.

If you don’t integrate the config.php files, you can access the bbPress admin by logging in ONLY through the forum/bb-login.php.

WordPress just isn’t aware of how to assign your session/role the forum admin rights. I am convinced this isn’t a cookie issue because all of us seem to have them pretty well synced up, and we’re able to login and stay logged in.

Are you using FF2 or 3? I’m on Flock, and my husband on FF3 and we’re not getting that. Also, what is your desktop resolution? I’ll try to recreate what you’re getting.

Edit: Actually, what is it that you’re seeing as floating? I’m confused.. I thought you were talking about the tags, but those don’t float in IE or Flock for me.

Have you tested it in Firefox on Windows?

The column float is not working correctly and pushes the middle down below the left.
