I have not at any time here solicited people to leave bbPress, and 99% of my conversations about this topic have taken place away from this forum, and for the most part, over the last 2-2.5 months.

I refute entirely the statement that I’m attempting to “fragment the already small community” or do anything in “bad taste”. While I’m a vocal son-of-a-gun at times, I think my record for attempting to support bbPress, this forum, and it’s community over the last 2 years will stand up to some scrutiny.

In fact, my initial post was simply a link to another website on which the discussion could take place. I had, and have, no intention of parking the discussion here. I did take time to reply to people as a courtesy. To me, it’s just being mannerly, but I apologise if it’s been wrongly viewed in a different way.

I never intended this thread to cause any issues, I included a link to a website for people that might be interested, and I’ve only replied to folks who have commented here of their own volition (never having sought their comments in these forums). I’ve tried to be courteous and succinct, though I have failings at both, directly e-mailing people whose contact details have been available so that I could keep the chatter here down.

Could I ask if a moderator would be as kind as to lock this thread?

Update: Just emptied out http://bbdevel.wordpress.com and moved everything to http://bbpdevel.wordpress.com. No sense in having two development blogs. The prior should eventually be deleted.

Re: Legacy plugins – It’s low on the list, but I think it’s important there be /some/ level of support. Would really be a shame to lose 100% of that time and effort.

@tonicarr – Nothing will be changing soon, so no worry there. Eventually the goal is to give bbPress users the option of migrating their existing installations into something more tightly integrated with WordPress as a plugin, instead of as a bridged (deeply integrated) stand-alone installation.

I think you’ve hit a key point christofius:

Some of the proposed plugins should be integrated in the core. Report user, user roles, quotes, SEO, stickies, improved moderation, Pivate Messages: all of that I consider essential to a good forum script

Many would agree, many wouldn’t.

Thats one of the goals, to ensure that you only had what was essential to run a forum.

I’ve been lucky enough to be on the internet for almost 20 years (and on “forums” since the bulletin-board/guestbook era), and i’ve never once used “private messaging”. That is, unless [you] call E-mail private messaging.

…while there is nothing wrong with making them into a plugin, it would be much more convenient for new users not to have to install a bunch of stuff to get those features.

The same could be said for people uninstalling them.

My viewpoint is this, and I may be totally wrong, but if you include ‘core plugins’ turned off by default, users get a light-weight active and working forum right out of the box, and all they have to click is “activate” to get the desire feature working.

This is how WordPress does it just now with the likes of Akismet, and there are very few complaints that I know of.

As a side note, if you wish to integrate with WordPress, my advice is you upload the files into a sub-directory called “forum” within the WordPress directory.

Our programmer merged BB press and wordpress, now when i log into bbpress admin area using the admin account, in the dashboard

i just see ,forums, topics, posts, users. I don’t see setup or plugins for example.

I have not been following the progress of this new update to bbPress. Will the plugin replace the bbpress I am currently running? Which I think is a stand alone along side wordpress. Where can I go for more information? I am thrilled that there is energy being put into bbPress. Thank you Thank you. One of my biggest issues is getting emails when someone posts.

I also have the same problem, and the installation documentation is not detailed enough.

“Step 4.Visit the intended URL of the bbPress site” – does that mean the page on my WordPress site that I intend to use the bbPress forum or do I need to create some other page somewhere (if so, where?)?

And where is this mysterious istaller I was expecting to see in step 5: “5.You will be greeted with the bbPress installer”

I did have a little nose around before posting this. I couldn’t find a definitive answer or guide.

I have no plugins (apart from Askimet which I only JUST activated now)

The main thing is the WordPress integration that’s causing the problems I think.

I get what someone referred to as the “white screen of death”. I think that’s a cookie problem. And I couldn’t access the admin panel. Maybe that’s a file permissions problem….

I don’t know. It’s aggravation. Looks like I’m stuck with 0.9.0.4. Until it gets hacked that is.

I know there’s a few threads on WordPress integration, whereby WP and bbPress share users in the database. But I was thinking of doing it another way, prior to launching my site, and wondered if others had done it.

Basically, I would turn off registration for WordPress. No users can register using WordPress, ever. Instead, the registration process is just handled by bbPress.

What I would then need to do, is have a bbPress login in the header of my WP blog. The comments for a post in WP would be handled by bbPress. I would probably have to create a bbPress thread manually, then link to it from the WP post, or somehow integrate it into the WP post.

Is it possible to include a bbPress thread in a WP post, if you know the thread id? I would probably tie the thread id to the relevant post using a custom field in WP, then grab it in my WP template.

Does this make sense? I hope so.

I hope you can help. I’m not great with bbPress

I have bbPress integrated with WP. I’m running WP 3.01 and bbPress 9.04. I’m using the “Root Cookie” plugin (from what I remember) to make them integrate.

I set this up a year ago so I don’t really remember what I did completely to start with.

I’m trying to pull posts out into a widget with a WP plugin but it’s not working which is why I want to upgrade.

I first of all I tried a straight upgrade to 1.0.2. The forum was accessible, but you couldn’t log in. If I visited /bb-admin I got a 404.

So I tried going from 9.0.4 to 9.0.6 to see if an incremental upgrade would work. This just completely broke and I was getting a function error.

Can anyone help me with a method to upgrade to 1.0.2 without breaking integration with WordPress?

Would appreciate any help.

Integration with WordPress, or any other external software, will not be something we’ll be aiming for in the core.

The plan is to allow classes and functions to be overwritten/extended so that anyone that interested can write a plug-in to handle such features. That’s more to do with OOP data mapping versus hard-coding, than an attempt to so anything with WordPress specifically.

Here is the process for getting bbPress info to show in WordPress. You would use a similar process, in reverse, to show WordPress data in your bbPress installation.

Widgets, and easy theming, are definitely points I would like to discuss in detail further down the line. I absolutely believe that the theme should just deal with simple presentation, and this ties in with that nicely.

Custom post types is actually very simple, and has already been factored in to a certain extent.
