bbPress 2.1 includes a conversion tool to import forums/topics/replies/users from some of the popular forum packages eg. bbPress or phpBB

There is an ‘example’ file also included as a ‘reference template’ that if Mingle is using a SQL database then you could easily modify this to be a custom importer by matching the correct database tables/fields etc

The file is called ‘example.php’ and is located in /wp-content/plugins/bbpress/bbp-admin/converters

If you look at converting Mingle it would be great if contributed this back to bbPress for other Mingle users https://bbpress.trac.wordpress.org/

In the example you came up with, you seem to have come up with your own structure. As far as I can tell, Bbpress’ structure is Forums > Topics > Posts.

So the current hierarchy eliminates the possibility of the duplicate URL in your example. If you had a forum “General Chat” and two separate topics called “chat” they’d have to be in separate forums.

EXAMPLE:

Preferred:

http://www.domain.com/general-chat/topic-one/chat

http://www.domain.com/general-chat/topic-two/chat

Current:

1. http://www.domain.com/forums

changes to

2. http://www.domain.com/forums/forum/general-chat/

when you click a forum, and then changes to

3. http://www.domain.com/forums/topic/topic-one

I appreciate your response, and I’ve seen some very helpful posts by you in these forums. Thanks. In this instance, however, are missing our point. In my example above, you can see that the URLs look nothing like wordpress permalinks. End users (and our visitors) are not concerned with how the back end might be similar. We only see that the URLs look silly and lack continuity (specifically switching from forums to forum to topic). They do not reflect the simple forum > topic > post hierarchy. When I said ‘useless,’ I was, of course, speaking in terms of end users and our visitors. I get that bbpress developers use it. I also get that it’d be possible to change (especially since wordpress is already doing what we want).

If wordpress URLs looked like bbpress URLs, I suspect they’d look something like:

http://www.domain.com/posts/post/post-one OR

http://www.domain.com/page/page-one

My guess is that this isn’t something that’s going to be possible with bbpress’ plugin unless someone develops it on the side (as you suggested), but please try to at least understand our inquiry instead of pretending like we simply don’t know what we’re talking about.

If anyone has any helpful hints on where one might get started on changing the url structure, it would be greatly appreciated. I see this being an issue that many, many more wordpress users will seek a solution for.

For SEO, and for advertising purposes, it’s much better to remove unnecessary /word/words/more-words-that-dont-help-identify-page-content/ from URLs.

You’d miss basically everything, because since 2.0 bbPress is dependent on WordPress. You can’t install it as a stand alone application anymore.

A ‘Forum’ will contain topics, whereas a ‘Category’ contains forums.

You might have a category ‘Open Source Software’ and then have forums ‘WordPress’ and ‘bbPress’ in that category.

Status – Yes, a ‘closed’ topic is still visable just no more replies can be posted to that topic.

Visibilty:

Public – Anyone can see these forums

Private: Only logged in registered users can see these forums

Hidden: Only Moderators/Admins can see these forums

As Anointed points out bbConverter is no longer being maintained but the code was used as the base for the freshly pressed bbPress v2.1 with many improvements to the conversion process.

Hey there! Just as the topic says

I’m looking for a plugin for WordPress or bbPress that will allow my forum users to create an image showcase.

I feel like they’re going to use it a good bit, as the site in question is all about collections of glass art.

Is there anything out there that will serve my needs? Does anyone know? I know that vBulletin has an addon that allows users to do this, and I believe phpBB does as well.

The sequence to tag bbPress to the WordPress plugins repo is a bit wonky, so you probably got an out-of-date zip.

I just tested it now, and it appears to be fine.

3. A dashboard widget – Right Now in Forums – which shows recent bbPress-related activity. Use the widget to quickly monitor your forums.

I see items 1 and 2. But where might I find item 3? I don’t see it in my dashboard anywhere. I do see a few bbpress-related widgets available though.

I’m using WordPress 3.4.1. and bbPress 2.0.3. I have two small issues. The first one is when someone signs up to the forum, the link in the email is to the admin wordpress control panel and I can’t figure out how to change it. The other one is that when a user puts in the wrong username/password it redirects them to the wordpress admin control panel also, which can cause a lot of issues. I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix these problems? Thank you.

It was a dumb mistake – but I thought I would post this if anyone is ever in my same spot.

This was very helpful:

However – since I had already turned all my plugins off I was out of luck for backing them up first!

What I did was phpmyadmin into one of my other sites running bbPress and copied its active_topics tab le contents – then pasted into the site that was not working. It was enough to get me back into admin and reactive my plugins.

This felt like a bug to me, either in bbPress or some other thing, so I created a ticket and fixed it right away for bbPress 2.1.

Users with accounts should almost always have the ‘read’ capability. If they lost it somehow, it seems like it’s because something interfered with it.

I have a clean WordPress install and the bbPress plugin.. I’ve created a new forum and topic.. But I want this forum to be my whole site.. Like I want my pages to be different pages of the forum.. How do I go about doing this?
