In reply to: How many more ALPHA’s before BETA?
I was dumb enough to install an alpha version on a running website.
What are the odds that I will be able to keep all my topics and accounts by the time bbpress hits 1.0 stable?
In reply to: Google doesn’t like my forum!Obviously I’m not sure, I’m just wondering
In reply to: important notice about bbPress 1.0 and _ck_ pluginsThat sounds like very good news!
Always found the url.com/forum/forum/ a bit wicked
Sounds marvelous.
My pages probably need some recrawling before it turns up though.
In reply to: important notice about bbPress 1.0 and _ck_ pluginsThanks for the headsup ck! Pretty glad with what I can do in alpha 1.06 so I personally don’t need any immediate change.
Take all the time you need for my part.
In reply to: Let ask again …Great post _ck_. Very inspiring and insightful for nitwits like me who are avid users but don’t know the big picture yet.
In reply to: New WP Posts to create new BBPress TopicNot recommended for SEO though. Duplicate content is a nono for google.
Just tried the plugin,
Would be great if Sam made a “noindex” or “noarchive” option just for those topics in the forum. It would then show the topics in the forum, add comments to the blog when replied in the forum, and just index the wordpress post.
Having said that,
It doesn’t list the latest topics if I try the widget, even after having set the forum url in the settings and such. Using alpha 1.06 bbpress and WP 2.7. The plugins (xmpp?) in bbpress are also activated.
In reply to: Google doesn’t like my forum!pagerank is only updated every several months.
In reply to: ColumbusUnderground.comSeems the change of your blog got quite some negative review
http://www.columbusunderground.com/forums/topic/very-very-frustrated-with-the-new-board
How do you feel about that?
In reply to: Google doesn’t like my forum! From what I’ve noticed I would say it’s indexing TOO much.
Having profile pages indexed, doesn’t that devaluate once’s website/forum rankings?
Just guessing.
Google indexes my forum nicely here. I rank first for the phrase “Quake Live invites” in google. Decent linkbacks and crawlability are what makes a page rank good in the search engines.
In reply to: Using Sticky PostI would like to bring up this topic again. In the alpha 1.06 version this is still a problem. I don’t understand why stickies only work when they are on the frontpage.
Stickying a post to a subforum makes the topic disappear from the subforums, yet they remain visible on the frontpage topic list (not in the form of a sticky, though).
eg.
Stickied to frontpage (works half decent)
http://www.holysh1t.net/forum/topic/quake-live-invites is stickied to the frontpage (it shows up there, but not in the subforum. Ok can at least live with that).
But then this topic sticked to a subforum (broken)
http://www.holysh1t.net/forum/topic/beta-invite
I stickied (not on frontpage) and it just disappears from the subforum and doesnt have any trace of stickyness on the frontpage.
In reply to: Dreampush.comNice!
You have inspired me to make my theme a little more flashy as well :]
Unfortunately I lack the skills :o(
Sound interesting eclipsenow
You can backup bbpress using a wordpress backup tool. If integrated, bbpress and wordpress use the same databases anyway. The plugin I use sends a backup of the whole blog & forum to my mail every week, day, month or whatever you want).
I use this plugin: http://www.blogtrafficexchange.com/wordpress-backup/
Though this seems the most popular: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-db-backup/
If you customize your template you should manually take a backup of that template as well, though. It’s just one folder you should get from your webserver whenever you change the template. If you don’t change the template (which I think is probably the case for you), then backing up your template folder is not of your concern yet.

(I’m sure the experts in this forum can tell you a lot more about general backup through cpanel and such. I’m just a guy learning through tutorials & trial and error just like you:p )
Well, I used Joomla intensively for several months. It lacked serious category/site structure management (no tags, archives,… ), the seo urls were not implemented standard, decent comment functionality had to be paid for (jomcomment), limited feed management , no pingback…
WordPress has just so many plugins! Joomla you’ve seem them all pretty quickly, if I recall right. In wordpress I keep discovering new awesome stuff all the time. Just a few minutes ago I discovered you could make post templates, which is awesome for me because I report in the same style over and over again (events).
I know each CMS has its own function, but for me wordpress answered my needs a lot better.
I’ve done Joomla. Glad I got rid of that.
If you don’t understand something in a guide, just look up another guide for the thing you don’t understand. Also, there’s a huge topic somewhere around this forum _ck_ wrote with a lot of details about the installation. Would be surprised if it wasn’t a sticky.
In reply to: forums within the site?I integrated it in my site by editing the bbpress template.
Looks like this now http://www.holysh1t.net/forum
Requires some basic css/html knowledge or puzzling skills though…
No idea if I could actually integrate the sidebars as well, but thats not really important to me.
In reply to: bbPress 1.0-alpha-6 releasedI spoke too soon. My private message plugin turns up a 404 page now.
In reply to: bbPress 1.0-alpha-6 releasedI risked the upgrade because I got sick of having to manually set the roles everytime someone registered. It works perfectly now. Seems like the plugins dont cause any problem either, and I use quite some of them.
Little problems I encountered during installation:
- The trunk files from the backpress linked in this topic were incomplete (http://backpress.automattic.com/changeset/190/trunk?old_path=%2F&format=zip). Had to download the official download link on this website.
- I used the upgrade guide on this website. But I also deleted my htaccess files following those steps. As a result I couldn’t go to any link without getting a 404 and I had no idea what caused this. Luckily I read something about permanent urls in the backend and having to edit the htaccess, so I managed to fix it pretty fast (considering I know very little about programming and stuff).
- I had the same cookie problem as SteveDrum. It sufficied to open both the wp-config and bb-config and just copy the auth keys from wp-config to bb-config. In the backend it seems like they were filled in, but they weren’t. The installation / upgrade didnt ask for them either.
Besides that everything looks great! :] thank you.
In reply to: Show off your Forum !!http://www.holysh1t.net/forum/
Spent nearly a half day trying to get the same look as my main blog template. I’m nearly there, just some minor tweaks to get it exactly the same
Besides that I several other plugins.
In reply to: Using Sticky PostEven if I sticky to the frontpage, it doesn’t show up in the subforums either. Should do that though if I want it (eg. forum rules).
In reply to: Using Sticky PostYea I have a similar problem. A sticky in a subforum (not sticky to front) makes the topic disappear from the subforum. It does still show up in the latest discussion on the frontpage. Can’t sticky posts in individual subforums though.
