Twenty Eleven – sidebar missing?

Published on January 20th, 2013 by zanzaboonda

Hey everyone-

I know it’s probably been asked/answered before, but I honestly searched through the forums and couldn’t find a direct answer to this (or, at least, one that I could understand, lol).

I’m running:
WP 3.5
BP 1.6.3
BBP 2.2.3
Twenty Eleven (very basic child theme)

http://zwoodlebooks.com/forums/

So my forums page doesn’t show the sidebar, and I’m not sure why. Oddly, it is not showing as a full page width. It’s like the space is there; the sidebar just isn’t showing.

When you click on an individual forum (e.g., http://zwoodlebooks.com/forum/freebies-and-giveaways/kindle/), it goes full page. I’d really just like everything to have the sidebar.

I ran the BuddyPress Compatibility plugin and they seem to be fine now (e.g., http://zwoodlebooks.com/members/), but the forums are not.

Have I done something wrong? I’m not a programmer, but I’m also not a n00b. I feel like there is some simple or obvious step I’ve overlooked.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

Need to block ability to change password

Published on January 20th, 2013 by gswaim

Hi,

Setting up a WordPress membership site with bbPress. All is well except this site uses an external program for membership control and all email and password changes must be done in the external program.

I noticed that bbPress allows a user to edit their WP profile. I need to block this. I don’t need a forum program to give a user the ability to change their WP profile. Any help on how to remove the “Edit” link from the profile page would be greatly appreciated.

Use Latex in bbpress

Published on January 19th, 2013 by djstat

I saw some discusses about the usage of Latex in bbpress. I guess maybe the easiest way to enable Latex in bbpress is to use Mathjax.

Put the following script code into the block of the header.php in the theme. This will load the latest version of MathJax from the distributed server, and configure it to recognize mathematics in both TeX and MathML notation. For details, refer to http://docs.mathjax.org/en/latest/start.html#mathjax-cdn and http://www.ouruniv.com/topic.php?id=4

script
type=”text/javascript”
src=”http://cdn.mathjax.org/mathjax/latest/MathJax.js?config=TeX-AMS-MML_HTMLorMML”>
script

The above script is not the exactly one. The shape bracket is omitted since the code won’t be displayed with it. You could copy the right one at http://docs.mathjax.org/en/latest/start.html#mathjax-cdn

Digest/Email Notification of new posts

Published on January 19th, 2013 by clarkhaley

I’m putting together a forum site for a group of sailboat owners. We currently are using a Yahoo Group to share ideas/ask questions, etc., but it is difficult to search. What we LIKE about Yahoo is that we can choose to receive an email for each new topic post AND Reply, or we can receive a daily or weekly digest. Most of us use the daily digest since we are out in the islands cruising and bandwidth is difficult to come by. Many of us actually use a Single Side Band radio with a Pactor modem and a program called SailMail that allows us to send/receive text emails at very slow speed (300-19200 Baud!!). I can’t find a plug-in that can provide email notification like Yahoo does. Any suggestions? I’ve set up bbPress with BuddyPress, but we don’t use the group feature in BP.

Thanks,

Customize BBpress forum pages

Published on January 18th, 2013 by SimonFullSteam

I’m trying to do something and have hit a wall.

I want to have multiple “hub” pages on my site each with a custom menu that I’m serving using my themes slider.

It all works great on the hub pages but forums are not pages of course, so I cannot get a slider at the top the same way I can on a page0.

The forum index is ok but as soon as a forum or topic is clicked I lose any obvious way to serve my custom menu.

Must haves;
– Each hub has it’s own menu
– the menu must exist on every hub child page and forum to allow navigation

Is there any sensible way to do what I want?

BBpress 2.1, Buddypress 1.6, WP 3.5, Dynamix theme
I have HTML/css moderate skills, low php, but willing to get contractors for what I can’t do.

Introducing plugins for Quotes, Ratings and Unread Posts

Published on January 18th, 2013 by Erlend

Hey fellow forumites. We’ve been using bbPress 2 to much delight over at jmonkeyengine.org for a little while now. After transitioning from the legacy BuddyPress forum, we needed a couple custom plugins made to reach feature parity with our old forum. One of our members, destroflyer, brilliantly stepped up to the task and made these plugins:

  • https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bbpress-direct-quotes/ – Does what it says on the tin.
  • https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bbpress-unread-posts/ – We’re aware of existing plugins. But to maintain the same experience for our users it seemed more appropriate to roll our own. If some version of “Unread Posts” comes to bbPress core we’ll probably readjust to that.
  • https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bbpress-post-ratings/ – This was made to fill in for BuddyPress Rate Forum Posts. We successfully converted all of our old ratings to bbPress. We have a plugin for that as well, though since it’s an edge-case thing we haven’t published it. Feel free to message me if you need this converter for your site.

Please be aware that @destroflyer cannot actively support these plugins (legitimate bug reports are welcome of course) since their original intent was for in-house use, and he’s making them public as a courtesy.

Enjoy!

Top 5 (or more) plugins to use on bbPress2 = ?

Top 5 plugins to use on bbPress = ?
I planned to try bbPress2 during the weekend to see if this would suit my company. I have a lot of experience of forums in general, phpbb2/3, SMF2, VN, etc. But this are very massive in their functions. As I understand bbPress2 is A LOT less “bloated”.
Still …
Some toys/functions are usally needed.
So in your opinion, what is good to have or a must have.

Also.
Is there companies/sites where you can buy supported bbPress2 addons?
