Hey all..

Rather new to BBpress.. Now what i want to do seems so easy with other forum software so i don’t see why i am struggling to get my head around this.. Anyways what i want to do is this:

– mysite.com <– Showing a few "Latest news" posts and other custom stuff including "Recent Forum Topics" etc etc
– mysite.com/forums/ <– Custom Forum Page, basically i want to display several forums under a few different "Forum Categories" like using a header image / background for each different category

I would also like to use forum icons.. (not really worried about "Topic Icons") I basically want a layout that looks like the following:

Sorry for the lack of detail lol.. Anyways… What is the best way to create a custom forum page like displayed above ?? What template should i edit as the main /forums/ Template ??

Really do appreciate any assistance on this one.. I am even willing to release a complete WP with full BBpress support if anyone can help me get this configured as i need / as stated above.. If any exp BBpress coders can assist me with this when i launch my project i am more than happy to give your service a plug / backlink from my website.

I am trying to launch my project in about 2 weeks.. Now as i am losing a lot of time with this i am opening to hiring someone to assist me if no one is kind enough to help me out for free.

Hey all,

As the title suggests… Would it be safe to begin working on my localhost using BBpress 2.3 Beta 2 and then update to 2.3 Final once it becomes available ? I really have no reason for this but am aware 2.3 brings a lot of new changes and i really don’t want to start digging into templates for the current latest stable version only to update to the new version and have to edit a bunch of templates again..

I am looking at getting my project live within 2 weeks give or take a few days.. will 2.3 Final / non Beta be out by then ?

Any advice on this matter is greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I’m having problems getting my forum members to see my forum and the latest posts. I had set the forum to private, but that turned out to force members to log in to see the forum (most of my members don’t have one).

So I set the forum to public. The forum is now visible when I’m not logged in. But now I discovered NEW posts won’t show up unless I’m logged in! The same happened to a forum member who does have a WP login.

The posts in question are set to public. The site can be found at here.

Please, I’m looking for any solution that’s not time consuming (I’ve spent too much time trying to get this forum to work already) and I know next to nothing about code, so that wouldn’t be a viable option for me. I hope someone can come up with a solution that finally gets this forum going.

I just set up a test site with WP 3.5.1, then added bbPress 2.2.4 and then added BuddyPress 1.6.4. I’m using site wide forums.

Plugins:
Alismet (not activated)
bbPress
BuddyPress
Custom CSS Manager
Hello Dolly (not activared)
PlugNedit (not activated)

Since this is new I don’t mind removing plugins (including bbPress and BuddyPress) and resinstalling. I don’t care about Custom CSS Manager, so it can go if needed.

I did notice that the directories “forums”, “forums/forum” and “forums/topic” were not created.

Could it have been the order in which I installed bbPress and BuddyPress?

Mormally I’d start from scratch, but after spending the last two weeks upgrading forums, etc software on multiple sites and then doing a server upgrade in order to run WP I’m a bit tired of looking at my computer 🙂

hi, i really need help. i am very new to wordpress and bbpress. i installed wordpress today and installed bbpress.

i did downloaded your theme and placed it in wp-content/themes/my-theme

in wordpress -> Appearance -> Themes. it says

“Broken Themes

The following themes are installed but incomplete. Themes must have a stylesheet and a template.

@golfer300 You will need to put the contents of the zip file inside your theme folder, once you have done this you should see a bbpress-functions.php inside your main theme directory. For this theme to fully work you will need to have the wordpress classes attached to the body tag.

@akgt I haven’t tested it using buddyPress, let me know if you use it.

Good idea re: resyncing the database. I don’t think this DB was maintained properly and upgrading from phpbb 2.x to 3.0.11 may have introduced some errors.

Does phpBB now have your “50K+” posts after the repair or still ~27K?

Unfortunately, the outcomes were all the same. the import seemed to hang, although it did get further this time (converting forums 100 – 199)

You only had ~10-15 phpBB forums when I looked earlier and it now looks like you have removed phpBB from your site so I can no longer confirm this.

The last message you should have seen during the import ‘forums’ step should have been `(converting forums 0 – 99)` before it moved onto the next step `Calculating forum hierarchy (0 – 99)`.

I used the stop/start suggestion, let it run for an hour, and it seemed that everything was imported.

Why do you presume that? Did you see your 50K+ posts somewhere?

Then when you go to view a forum or category or topic, and most of it is missing. Most recent posts were from 2004.

I stated in my previous post any counts you see before running the repair tools will be inaccurate.

This was before running any repairs. Running the repair functions depleted the counts further.

I’ll reiterate this again, any counts you see before running the repair tools after the import is finished are inaccurate and should not be relied upon.

The repair tools nor any part of bbPress will delete content from your WordPress database unless you explicitly do this via ‘forum reset’ or ‘purge previous import’.

I’m not sure I can troubleshoot this in time for my client’s deadline but if further suggestions or upgrades come up, I’m game for trying them out in the future.

At this stage yours is the ONLY phpBB forum that has NOT been successfully imported, there are virtually no future upgrades planned for the phpBB importer because they are not needed as it has thus far worked with every single phpBB import that I have been asked to test or help out with.

The output of the converter should be similar to this (They should match your phpBB stats to the nearest 100)

As I stated in the comments of the review you posted for the bbPress plugin at WordPress.org I am more than happy to take a look and help you get it imported.

If there is a bug with the importer and why your phpBB is not playing nice like all the other phpBB forum imports I can write a patch to fix it but I will need accurate detailed information from you to do this.

@ashenkargmailcom – I did make ‘some-sort’ of progress on this today, taking a previous multisite install (wp 3.5.1) and then running the latest bp + bbp ‘trunk’ (bp 1.7 beta2 & bbp 2.3 beta1). In this test I had:

a. Buddypress network activated
b. bbPress only activated in the root (site 1 in my case of a 3 site multisite)

The inability to create group forum topics persists with the default buddypress theme, my Genesis Theme (Agency running Genesis Connect) HOWEVER, creating new topics (w/in group forums) does seem to work if I activate the twenty-twelve theme OR activating the genesis theme (agency) without Genesis Connect. I’m still not 100% sure what this means, though it leads me to think the the issue may not be in the database (which is where I previously thought the malfunction-at-the-junction happened…).

In a second test, I did this:

a. Buddypress only activated in the root (site 1 in my case of a 3 site multisite)
b. bbPress only activated in the root (site 1 in my case of a 3 site multisite)

& any theme (genesis w/ genesis connect, buddypress default) will allow the full creation of group topics. The same applies (as Fee) pointed out above if both bp & bbp are network activated. The only unworkable situation (for me) seems to be bp (network active) & bbp (single (root) site active).

Still not resolved (to my liking) but perhaps eliminating some variables…

With anything like this I recommend just playing with it. If you can setup a local installation of wordpress and bbPress then you can mess about as much as you like, you generally find out a lot of cool stuff doing that.

Or if your site is just a test at the moment, add it and see what happens!

Hi guys,

I’d like to alter the ouput in the Freshness column, as you can see in the code below, bbpress knows the latest forum post in any one forum and links to it if you click the Freshness link, in this case ‘4days 2 hours ago’. Instead of it outputting 4 days 2 hours I’d like it to show the title of the post.

I think I need to edit the bbp-header but I don’t know where to find this.

Can anybody help me do this please?

Our groups page is not listing anything past page 1, have had a look but can’t seem to find any settings that may be affecting it? Would anyone have any idea how, where or why this is happening? Just updated to latest version of Buddypress so know it’s not that, and all the groups are visible when logged in as admin.

Does the code I found here still work, as that was posted almost one and a half years ago?

Plus if it does work, how do I modify it to show only certain forums (cause I’m using the Membership plugin from WPMU DEV to control access to a few which are for premium members only)?

There is a patch included with the upcoming bbPress 2.3

Alexander – I’ve been experiencing EXACTLY what you describe on a Buddypress (1.6.4) + bbPress (2.2.4) multisite (WordPress 3.5.1), in that I can create new group topics from the back end (check), from the site-wide forums area (check) but NOT within the actual buddypress group area (front-end). As odd as this might sound, I did try enabling bbPress (over the entire multisite) which then enabled me to post/create new topics & replies from the front-end of the groups/forums area. If I switch bbPress back to being enabled only on site 1 (i.e the root in my multisite environment) then I’m back to the inability to post/create topics & replies via the front-end, though again this all works from the back-end + via the site-wide forums area (i.e new topic to a specific group forum works 100%).

So, I’ve concluded that somewhere along the line, there’s some sort of corruption, likely in one of the db tables &/or relationships. You’re not the only person I’ve heard of who has had this exact problem over the past few months w bbPress + buddypress + WP multisite. As a test, I created a multisite BuddyPress + bbPress fresh install, and the ability to create/post topics & replies from the front-end (within the group forums area) works 100% (i.e no disappearing). This test also works whether bbPress was enabled sitewide or a a specific site in the multisite network.

A very confusing problem indeed. The frustrating piece is I’ve actually come across this problem before (~ 3 months) ago, resolved it, though now I can’t 100% recall the steps I took to rectify!

I think I’ll tackle this one again, as the idea of needed to enable bbPress as a network activation to resolve the issue is not the most ideal situation, at least not for me.

I’m using the latest version of bbPress, Buddypress, in a subdomain multisite environment.

I have the site-wide forum enabled. It works.

I also have “Allow BuddyPress Groups to have their own forums” enabled. This part doesn’t quite work.

In the groups admin, I can enable the group forum. After I do this, the forum tab appears and shows that there are no new topics in the group’s forum. I can also see the new forum as a subgroup of the parent group-forum.

When I post new topics to the group’s forum, they don’t show up. They just disappear. I don’t even see them in the backend in the Topics view.

This briefly worked before – and then it stopped. I might have changed some slugs, and enabled and then disabled the Buddypress forum component.

I’ve ran the forum error checker in Tools/Forum. There are also no slug conflicts in Settings/Forum.

What can I do next?

Hello, I haven’t kept up with bbPress lately but out of curiosity I came back to see how it was going. So I ran a test site with the latest 3.5.1 version of WordPress and subsequently added bbPress via the plugins page.

I must say that you guys have done well. I was sure that this software was going to end but it looks like you finally gave bbPress a permanent niche in the dev world. I loved the older versions of it as well, when the forum software had it’s own site and database. I would often toy with WordPress themes and customize bbPress to match them. But this was, by far, the easiest installation of bbPress I ever ran. It seems more common sense to use it as a plugin with WordPress since it so many people use them together.

Anyways, I knew from the overhaul of this website that the dev team hadn’t given up. I give you guys props for keeping it alive! Now all that’s left to do is keep up with rivals (ahem, Vanilla).

According to what you told me, my forum page should be located at http://example.com/forums

This did not work (I get a 404 error). Instead, it is http://example.com/?post_type=forum. I used this for the url in the custom menu, and it works.

Is this going to be a problem down the road?

I don’t know why it matters, but this is a typical WP install using an ftp client (uploaded WP from my computer to the server and did the quick install). As an experiment today, I used the simple-script feature from Bluehost (my host) to do a test WP install in another location. I installed bbpress on it and the forums page is where you said it would be (http://example.com/forums).

Any idea why my forums are at this other address?

Situation:

Have a WP (3.5.1) installed and multi site enabled to use sub domains only (no top level domain mapping)

1. Create 1st Sub Site sub1.mysite.com and assign it to a new user (tom)
2. In another browser (Firefox) i login as tom to wp-admin and am able to got to the dashboard of sub1.mysite.com
3. Create a 2nd Sub Site sub2.mysite.com and assign it to user Tom
4. I switch back to firefox and f5 (refresh page) I can see in the top admin bar that Tom now has 2 subsites…and i can navigate to the dashboard of both sites…

I then proceed to install buddypress and activate it at the primary site (mysite.com – not network activated) as per tutorial @ http://labzip.com/the-definitive-guide-to-buddypress-bbpress-configuration/

After which i repeat steps 1 thru 4 above to make sure i can still create and access subsites as the user Tom… and yes I can… We’re goo to here

Then I install bbpress following the same tutorial on the above video…

Now that I have a installation that comprises of WP3.5.1 Multisite configuration + Buddy Press + bbPress… I test once more…

So i proceed to perform the same steps 1 thru 4 above.. but this time with different results..

If i create the subsites via superadmin and try to login as user Tom.. I’m able to..

But if i go to front end of site using another browser (Firefox) i am able to login using my user and pass as Tom. But when i add an additional blog under Toms user account.. the blog gets created..

I then refresh the page and logout as Tom and the log back in as Tom i can see the admin bar has the new site listed under my sites. But when i go to mouse over the newly self created site the only two options i see are dashboard and visit site.

If i click dashboard i get a blank page with the error message “You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.”

If i deactivate bbPress and then try to access the same sub site i still get “You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.”

However if i register another sub site as Tom i can access the dashboard for this newly created subsites (Site created after deactivation of bbPress)

Reading blog’s and forums..

It appears to be an issue with roles and capabilities of a self generated sub site when bbPress is activated…

I have now spent 2+ days messing around with this and these is little documentation here at bbPress site..

In fact the documentation is available here…: http://bbpress.org/about/multisite/ and is useless as its not done…

There seems to be a million install guides that all show how to activate and configure bbPress..

Am i the only one with this issue as no one seems to be speaking about this anywhere that i have read…

I’m currently working with/foisting my testing on @Clicknathan (Hi, Nathan!) on a plugin to address the goals of indicating unread topics, indicating topics that have unread replies, and providing a means to jump to the first unread reply for a given topic. (This is my first foray into the wild-n-wacky world of bbPress, PHP, and WordPress plugins…very educational thus far…)

My first cut is another solution using user metadata; I store a map of topic IDs to last-read-reply IDs. It looks like this `$TOPIC-ID:$LAST-REPLY-ID|$TOPIC-ID:$LAST-REPLY-ID|$TOPIC-ID:$LAST-REPLY-ID`.

When rendering topics in the loop, I check the topic’s metadata for last-reply ID, and compare it to the last-read-reply ID in the user’s map. If there is no matching topic in the map, I add a CSS class for “unread topic”; if there is a matching topic, and the last-read-reply ID is less than the last-reply ID, I add a CSS class for “unread replies”.

When handling replies, I update the map (only in memory!) as I loop through each reply, then commit the map back to user metadata after processing all replies. I also check each reply ID; if it is the first one I find greater than the last-read-reply ID from the map for the current topic, I throw in a “first-unread” anchor tag, so it can be easily jumped to on the client side.

Currently, I don’t limit the number of topic/last-read-reply pairs I store in the user metadata; I’m quite sure there will be a point where performance suffers.

I’m also unsure how best to handle pagination for the “jump to first unread reply” question; while dropping the anchor tag is easy enough, I’m not sure how to properly form the URL to which to append the anchor tag ref, without some fairly complex logic involving looking up the relative index of the first unread reply in the set of all replies for the topic.

Anyway, I’d love some feedback at the conceptual level now, and I’d even more appreciate some solid criticism when I get the plugin whipped into shape and submitted.
