    Reset permalinks

I think part of the problem is a multi-shared-incorrect-database array on the server. I’ve asked server admin to investigate. Somehow the database(s) for test.loftusweb.com / loftorg.com / loftusweb.com is incorrectly accessing the wrong domanin/sub-domain.

I’ve deleted everything in loftorg.com and will start over with it once the database issue is resolved for test.loftusweb.com. Then, we will only have one domain (test.loftusweb.com) to troubleshoot.

I’ll update this when server admin gets done.

    Above should read:

Hi and thanks once again for your response.

I do not use JetPak .. use WordFence and Akismet.

I tried the Twentytwenty theme … does not rectify the problem (just produces weird spacing and color schemes).

I tried the plugin testing – alas no joy. The problem did not correct when they were all (except bbpress) deactivated.

I’ll try the “HealthCheck & Troubleshooting” plugin you listed. Stay tuned.

ok, presume you have bbpress enabled ?

it could be a theme or plugin issue

    Themes

As a test switch to a default theme such as twentytwenty, and see if this fixes.

    Plugins

If that doesn’t work, also deactivate all plugins apart from bbpress and see if this fixes. if it does, re-enable one at a time to see which is causing the error.

If you cannot do this to your site (say because it is live) then use the ‘troubleshooting’ features of this plugin to let you test without affecting other users

    Health Check & Troubleshooting

    Then come back

OK .. the wheels fell off the cart. All of a sudden, the “Forums” are not showing up through the menu links on the homepage. https://test.loftusweb.com – then click either Forums or Registry in the top menu. Interesting that when the “magnify glass” in SEARCH is clicked, the Forums and Topics are displayed but not accessible.

The HTML pages (links on left side-bar menu) still work.

Here is the link that I’m referring to (if that helps)

How do I move the last two entries herein to a new topic?

At the moment, both sites are essentially empty. I’ll be unpacking a “cPanel” backup of an old HTML site to the “test” site then somehow converting all the HTML pages to WP pages. I will be replacing the old dokuwiki with bbpress and manually populating the bbpress forum with about 100 entries (topics). Once all is beautiful and operative with the “test” site I’ll move it from “test.mysite.com” to “mysite.com”.

Will the bbpress forum move with the website transfer to the new site or does anything proprietary to bbpress need to be done (e.g. new SQL Database) ?

ok, moving bbpress between sites can be complex.

Is the test site a mirror of the live site?

Your help and suggestions were terrific. Thank you.

Now, once the bbpress site is completed, manipulated, and refined in the “test” sub-domain, how do I move it over to the active domain? I have it in ‘test.domain.com’ and will move it to ‘domain.com’.

    Hi @robin-w,

Has this feature been changed/removed in your plugin?

I’ve just updated to the latest version and I can’t seem to find it.

I’ve just come across this same issue, where if I navigate to “View Latest Topics” (https://snipboard.io/wTzMvL.jpg)

it loads and reloads additional versions of the content infinitely until the browser runs out of ram.
    https://homesteadacademy.com/forums/view/latest-topics/

I have tried the snippet you kindly provided in the “code snippet” plugin but no luck.

    Any advice for me?

@robin-w Thanks for your feedback, insight and testing on my behalf.

I’ve used the troubleshooter to run the site using 2022 theme and only bbpress. Still won’t allow me to add the user to the forum.

Also the username has the initial of firstname and lastname capitalised so it is more accurately of the format ‘Firstname. Secondname’ – i note that in the ‘all forums’ screen, the moderators columns are all displayed lowercase. So i tried adding the username in the format ‘firstname. secondname’ but to no avail.

To further narrow down the issue I successfully created a new member/user on the site with the actual username ‘Firstname. Secondname’. After upgrading their Forum role to moderator, i attempted to added them as a moderator to a forum. So i added ‘Firstname. Secondname’ (without inverted commas) into the Forum Moderators field and hit update. This then left the field with ‘firstname-lastname’ in place. So when adding the moderator it swaps the ‘dot space’ to a hyphen and makes all characters lowercase.

With this new discovery, I tried adding the original problem username back as a forum moderator, all lowercase with the ‘dot space’ replaced with a hyphen.

    But it didn’t accept it.

So I’m confused now as to why it works with one new user in the same format as the old user (which doesn’t work)?

See the above testing in action here

With the new knowledge, I finally retried adding the troublesome username in lowercase with hyphen whilst in a similar troubleshooting set-up but again it didn’t accept it.

    Any further thoughts?

Ok .. I sorta guessed that .. no problem doing them manually. I’m still testing lots of different things on the test site before I move it all to the live URL.

How would you suggest I handle the email addresses? Ideally, they will be required for new entries but not be displayed (malware harvesters). I could use something like Mailchimp to maintain a list of submitted addresses and keep private.

Also, I need to put a notice on entries that have NO email address (old ones I manually copy) that an address is needed.

Thanks for the help you’ve given. I really appreciate it.

OK .. I re-read the forum rules and apparently it’s ok to put in a URL. This is the test site. There is an image on the home page with a button that says “Click Here” at the bottom. Click it and it’ll take you to the bbPress “Name Registry” attempt. https://loftorg.com

    In case you missed this:

BTW – I have this working up on a test site that you can view – if I’m not breaking any forum rules by supplying a URL. It’s merely a test site – go to the main page and click the button at the bottom of the page and it’ll take you to the design (in progress) of the bbpress “Registry” attempt.

Let me know if you want me to send you the URL.

I just tried adding a user with a space in the name ie ‘test user’

then in dashboard>forums>edit forum>moderators I typed in ‘test user’

it did not pick up the name as I typed it so I had to type the full name, but it did accept it, and added it correctly to the forum database.

per forum moderators are relatively new, and the 15 yr old and 8 year old threads would have been for bbpress version 1.

so on my test site bbpress does allow moderators with spaces in the names.

my next suggestion would be it could be a theme or plugin issue

    Themes

As a test switch to a default theme such as twentytwenty, and see if this fixes.

ok, I found the divi theme on one of my customer sites and tested and followed Dozza’s advice

    so go to

dashboard>Divi > Theme options > Builder > Advanced > Static CSS File Generation > Clear.
    then
dashboard> divi > Theme Options > Performance> Dynamic CSS option and disable

THEN critically you need to clear and server side caching, AND clear your browser cache.

Server side will depend on your host, and/or any caching plugins you have installed.
Browser – see this helpful article

How To Clear Cache for All Major Browsers

    then it all worked fine

thanks Dozza for your work on this 🙂

I’m just a guy sat in his kitchen who was helped several years ago when I was setting bbpress up, so I try to help others – I’m not a bbpress author.

Updates from the bbpress authors are few and far between, I think they are on other projects now, and maybe consider bbpress as a mature product. The philosophy was always to keep bbpress small, and let other plugins add stuff that was needed.

I do ask them to update the ‘tested to’ but it rarely happens. I test bbpress with new versions.

That is and will always be the issue with open source software – it relies on people doing stuff for free, and people’s focus changes and people move on. That is annoying, but the reality of life.

If you have things that need core updates, you can raise them on trac

    https://bbpress.trac.wordpress.org/report

That way at least stuff that is wrong or could be done better gets logged.

Thanks, Robin for the plugin suggestion, but it’s more of the core of bbPress which seems quite outdated and a little messy with code. Plus, doing template overrides, there are things which hoped would be there that I can override. Some styles are using!important, some styles are reused in ways they shouldn’t be, so I had to get creative with overrides…I had to use javascript to remove/change/add classes to select elements: ie buttons.

Then, on the bbpress plugin page at .org, this shows up as a notice:

This plugin hasn’t been tested with the latest 3 major releases of WordPress. It may no longer be maintained or supported and may have compatibility issues when used with more recent versions of WordPress.

Time to revamp this plugin and bring the coding and features up-to-date–plus capabilities. Even here in this forum, the font size is just 12 px. Time to move it up a bit, especially for accessibility 🙂

    HI

Wordpress has issued a warning on the plugins page at wordpress.org saying that this plugin hasen’t been tested with the current version of wordpress

So Just out of curiosity is bbPress 2.6.9 campatible with the latest version of wordpress 6.2 ??
And has it also been tested with the newest version of PHP 7.4/8.0/8.1/8.2 ??

The information tab on the plugins page in wordpress.org says:
    Version: 2.6.9
    Author The bbPress Contributors
    Last update: 1 year ago
Demands WordPress version: 5.0 or newer
    compatible up to: 5.9.5
Demands PHP version: 5.6.20 or newer

Please check and inform me and the rest of the plugins users about the status.
Oh yeah and remember to update the plugins inforation tab at wordpress.org

    /Lars

Some other mail server setting types go through but some do not. Is there something we are missing in this setup?
