Hi,

I have bbpress deeply integrated with WordPress but I am unable to register. Here’s my website forum: http://itracki.com/forum

When I try to register, it says that “email is required” even though I have clearly inputted an email. Is anyone else having this problem? Help?

bbPress is not a plugin of WordPress, you have to install it separately as you had installed WordPress.

Hello,

I’m trying my first install of bbpress on my WordPress 3.0 site. I’ve uploaded the plugin, but when I attempt to activate it I’m taken to a screen with the following error message: “The plugin does not have a valid header.”

Any ideas on how to resolve this?

It wasn’t a dig at Sam mate. Not at all. I wasn’t a fan of Sam’s management style here, but felt he got dealt a difficult hand to play with the backPress 180 on him, and I’m a very big fan of his code in 1.0. The bbPulp site did become a pron site while an Automattic employee, and again, if there had been a post that it wasn’t going to be renewed so that anyone who wanted the data could copy it and start it again – bam, problem solved.

If it looked like, or was taken as a sly dig at Sam, i apologise entirely, it wasn’t meant that way.

Take Jane@wordpress’s post that started all of these questions. She’s giving people a heads up. She’s spreading information out to the community, so at least interested parties can answer general questions. Information then Action works best, the people at Automattic taught me that, because the do it so very well with WordPress

What point use today bbPress standalone, if bbPress plugin is made soon? I wait it, because i and my users need plugin forum to my WordPress. In my forum bbPress is very fast and good but i delete it some months ago because 200 members doesn’t post more than 1-10 messages per week…

Per day 50-100 unique and nothing from AdSense. My blog AdSense is 100 €/month and 1 000 unique per day. I think plugin is better for unique to forum and for good AdSense to forum.

WP3MS and WP2MU were never supported.

It was always suggested that one should use Buddypress if using WPMU.

As much as it’s not what I want, it will stand up favourably due to being availible as a custom one click install for WordPress.com users. There are also many people that use WordPress that have it installed via sopme form of control panel from their web host, for them a 1 click integration will be massive.

Yah … if I did not care, and if I did not see the potential, I would not bother saying anything.

My position has always been … for a LONG time … a grave disappointment that BBpress was the poor cousin of the Automattic family, kept starved and locked up in the basement.

I know the amazing work of people like _ck_ etc trying to fix things but 100s of wasted hours over the years …. I know the reality too.

Especially for those of us trying to support multi-language communities … which is a whole other bugbear.

BB in BP is a whole other beast and I was interested to read it was going the way of a plugin … which I take to mean it will remain a very minimal device … versus the idea of ‘the community’ forking it as a new stand alone.

• How that will stand up against myBB, Simple:Press, WP-United and others, makes me wonder if it is really the right choice for someone with $10,000,000 to go showing with.

BP looks like a bad rail crash right now and is not for general users who have become accustomed to other standards (… or at least, a good looking train which has been involved in a a bad rail crash. Give it its dues.)

As I recall it used to a really long time ago, but had the feature taken out or turned off.

That was actually when you yourself add a post and it would get added via AJAX.

If this feature is not currently supported, do you think it can be easily done?

Yup, P2 theme for WordPress also checks for blog/comments updates via AJAX so it should be easy for bbPress too.

How lovely of you to say. Especially after all those lovely things you’ve said about bbPress over on the BuddyPress forum. You are truly too kind.

WP3 and bbPress play really nicely in my experience.

So far, 29*** upgrades to WP3 done, and 4 have had issues above the usual ultra-minor things. Most of those have a bbPress forum attatched, 2 of them use deep integration and there’s a definate hit in loading but it plays real nicely.

There is 1 new issue with Deeply Integrated WP3/bbP1 install, and thats with regisrtaion but: 1) there was a patch by Zaerl on the day this was found and 2) if you’re using a WP/bbP integrated website you should use WP for registration anyway.

***6 of those sites were running either a nightly or RC version anyway.

I didn’t ask about BuddyPress because the Original Poster was kind enough to give us the URL in question, so I can see for myself it’s not a BuddyPress issue (i do actually make the effort).

Given that WP3 has been out for a week, and we’ve had very very very few people telling us of integration issues (deep or normal), I’m quietly confident that there are few new integration issues. Previously we’ve had alot more posts in the last 4 WordPress upgrades – even in the first week.

And as for my short question in reply… It’s important information. Its really difficult to give up time and effort to help out here when people can’t actually tell us what’s going on, or gone wrong. You’d be amazed at how simply the really intelligent folks here can solve the most complex of issues (and I’m def not one of them) once given actual information.

If you come on these forums asking for help with a problem, make sure you say:

I have already installed wordpress mu with bbpress English version. Now I want to have a forum with Arabic interface under the same installation of wordpress mu.

– I want to share data between English and Arabic forums (only want to have different interface – language). Means, I want to show topics or categories created under English, in Arabic forum also. Only change of language must be for the interface.

– I want to share users table between English and Arabic. That is, a user logged in from English should be in logged in state when he go to Arabic forum.

Here are my questions

Should I install Arabic version of bbpress under wordpress mu for the above requirement?

Is there an Arabic version available?

Should I do anything extra for sharing data and users table?

Please suggest me how can I do it.

I was in a hurry last night and went with an iFrame solution hosted inside the bbPress folder and placed it inside my wordpress theme, that worked pretty well. When I redesign the site I’ll be sure to use this function, it looks awesome!

Trading insults is not very mature, therefore I think it’s time to close this topic.

pagal, you just have to be flexible, you can’t always get what you want for free, so you either have to adjust and find another way to do it or hire a coder to make what you want.

The fields in the user profile are unfortunately handled in a very inconsistent way, it doesn’t even use the same code on the registration page vs. the profile edit page vs the profile display page which is a symptom of the adhoc nature of how bbpress was built. But I don’t think even wordpress has that ability built in yet.

I might not have been very clear on that. Foremost I want to fork WordPress and turn it into a fast, modern and elegant cms. At the same time I want to fork WordPress and bbPress to run as plugins on that cms. I just used the backpress name in my post to avoid using WordPress two times.

I’m personally not that interested in a standalone forum, but in a forum that integrates on my normal website easily and a normal website that is modern, fast and easily extendible. The current WP codebase might have the fast-part but it isn’t modern and it isn’t easily extendible (ok, it’s better then phpBB for example but more object oriented code wouldn’t do bad at all).

I’ve decided this is not something I want to get into. Way too much work for one specific solution and multi-input fields like birthday are going to be very complicated.

The sites you see this on already have full-time programmers while you don’t know how to code at all so you are going to constantly rely on begging for free help from others.

Since you are using WordPress integrated I recommend you just use an existing plugin for it to do this instead.

I understand the desire to make a WP plugin that is a forum, I can see Matt’s viewpoint on that, but in comparison to bbPress as it stands, it’ll be far from lightweight.

Fair enough, but as you state further down in your post, most if not almost all of that bloat would come from WordPress, no?

In my opinion, a fair comparison would have to be WP/bbPress (deep integration) and WP/forumpluginX.

I accept that there may be better ways to run a forum than to wrap WordPress around it. But other things need to be taken into account, eg how much time would I have to spend to ensure that the forum (or specifically the forum’s header and footer etc.) looks and behaves like the rest of my site? Can I leave a site with a less tech-savvy admin at all, or will I have to maintain everything forever because said admin can’t get his head around dealing with WP AND a forum that “works kind of like WP but not really”? And so on.

Of course, first and foremost the thing needs to run, and run reasonably fast. But this is also a question of priorities.

Sure, many people will not even realise that there’s an issue, or they might simply not give a toss, but for the rest of us it comes down to whether some additional bloat and a more sluggish forum might not be acceptable if we get clean integration and a single backend interface in return.

I think any discussion about bbPress as a plugin should be seen in this context.

Sorry as I’m sure this has been brought up before, but I couldn’t find a good answer…

Is it possible to create user groups and establish private categories within a bbPress forum? I’m working on setting up a site that will work as a collaboration between 5 different organizations, and ideally I want the forum to work like so:

General Forums (anyone can see / post, sitewide moderators can moderate)

Org 1 Forums (anyone can see, only org 1 members can post, org1 officers and sitewide moderators can moderate)

Org 1 Officers Forum (only org 1 officers can see / post, sidewide moderators can moderate)

And so on for Organizations 2-5.

I have been bashing my head against the wall trying to figure this out for a while, and it is basically what is keeping me from deploying bbPress.

My site is http://www.neohouston.com, which is a heavily customized WordPress site. I would love to use bbPress if I can because of how fast and light it is – but if I can’t effectively segment users then I can’t use it.

Any suggestions, or help?
