    @eclipsenow – For now, the bbPress philosophy is to keep those 20 features in plugins and out of the core. But judging from how WordPress has grown in features over time, I’m sure bbPress 2.0 will have all 20 features in the core!

    Ah sorry, I must’ve read that just after waking up! Yah I haven’t seen any visitor sitemap plugins…

    Hey Patrick10128 – bbPress actually has a design philosophy which puts most features in plugins, not in the core engine itself.

    Which features are you looking for? We could let you know if there are plugins that do it or not…

    Matching the bbPress theme to your WordPress theme isn’t trivial… at first it really bothered me. But once I realized how different blogs and forums were, it made a lot more sense to me.

    The initial conversion was the hardest part. After that, little tweaks to my blog theme didn’t take that long to incorporate into my bbPress theme. But I’m getting ready to do a redesign of the blog, and am dreading converting it into a bbPress theme again. It probably won’t be that bad; it’s just inconvenient.

    Overall though, it’s been definitely worth it :-). Frankly I am liking bbPress much more than I ever liked WordPress!

    There was a good discussion on the bbPress Google Sitemap plugins here:

    Yah, Google search is the best way I know to search multiple *Press sites.

    I should highlight some downsides though:

    * The search is not necessarily live; it’s searching Google’s version of the site, not your live site. So it’s especially important to have live Google Sitemaps on any WordPress or bbPress installs you want searched.

    * You want to make sure that any subdomains do a good job of hiding pages that you don’t want searched. For example, I have MediaWiki on a subdomain… which does a bad job of hiding the editable version of each page (and other random pages too, like WhatLinksHere). I fixed that with plugins and other hacks, but it cluttered my search results for a while.

    Hmm, those are the big downsides. Overall though, you can’t beat the ease of implementation of a Google custom search engine!

    I added the index and installed the plugin (my bb_topics has 11,826 records).

    The first query took 0.0005 sec. The second one took 0.0920 sec. That’s 184 times faster!

    Ah ok, didn’t realize you wanted something to search both WordPress and bbPress. I don’t know if any plugins natively support that – I need to do something similar on my site, but use Google’s custom search engine to pull it off:

    _ck_ wrote a Super Search plugin that’s much more advanced than the normal search:

    I haven’t tried it out yet but it looks pretty cool!

    Is there a link we can look at? :-)

    The downside would be that one user could corrupt your bbpress install with tons of inappropriate tags… but there’s no spam check on tags (that I’m aware of).

    This looks awesome! I am going to try it out tomorrow… I noticed that some nbsp’s were being “encoded” in my bbPress installs tonight, and was wondering how I was gonna strip them out. Looking forward to trying this out :-).

    Will report back with results.

    Hello David!

    A fully integrated version of bbPress 1.0 is being tested here:

    https://bbpress.org/forums/topic/bbpress-10-alpha-4-released

    If you can help out with the testing, that would be great!

    I was going to sit this thread out, until I saw some of the recent comments.

    I understand that there is frustration over the WordPress integration issues (I share them as well). But I don’t think it’s fair or productive to lash out at the very people that make this community move forward (Sam and _ck_, among others).

    The motivation and energy of key contributors is the most precious asset of an open source community, as they are what keeps the community forward.

    The feedback and ideas of key users is also hugely important, as they tell the community where to go.

    But when feedback attacks the motivation and energy of key contributors, I’ve learned not to just sit back. Because even if the feedback is 100% dead on, if the key contributors are hurt by the way it’s delivered… then as a community, we have been stopped dead in our tracks.

    I think we all agree that full integration with a shared signin is a priority. If we unite behind that goal, maybe we can achieve it. I just think that the motivation and energy of key contributors is key to our getting there.

    One last thought: Sam appears to work mostly on bbPress, whereas the integration work needs to be done on the WordPress side. So if we want to advocate for full integration, maybe we should organize as a community? If you look at the most popular “ideas” for WordPress, full integration isn’t on the list:

    https://wordpress.org/extend/ideas/?show=popular

    I am probably missing it, but I don’t even see full integration as a submitted idea here:

    https://wordpress.org/extend/ideas/search.php?q=bbpress&forums=1

    If we could agree as a community on the wording, I’m sure we could all vote it up. We only need 159 votes to get onto the list of Most Popular Ideas. Maybe that would help Sam’s ticket get some developers assigned to it.

    I would rather focus our energies there, especially since I don’t believe that our discussions here are going to change the priorities of the WordPress development team (which is what we need to move forward).

    Best,

    I’ll take a crack at this!

    1) I’m not sure about this, but if it doesn’t exist then I’m pretty sure it can be added through a plugin.

    2) The “bb-attachments” plugin allows users to upload images and other files: https://bbpress.org/plugins/topic/bb-attachments/

    3) I was able to match the look of my WordPress blog to my bbPress forums pretty easily

    4) There’s a five star rating plugin here: https://bbpress.org/plugins/topic/bb-ratings/

    I’m a big fan of bbPress, and have been using it for over a year. There are some people who have mixed feelings on bbPress though – you can read about that here:

    https://bbpress.org/forums/topic/bbpress-facebook-page

    I haven’t had problems integrating signin or matching my theme. However, I have a site with one WordPress install and three bbPress installs, all using a shared users table… and each system has its own profile link. I hear that BackPress should solve this eventually (a single profile system that will integrate across multiple installs like this), so I’m sticking with the *Press platform for now. But it’s been my biggest issue so far, so thought I’d share in case it’s something you need right away.

    Good luck!

    A user somehow got marked as a Bozo, and now her comments show up only to her.

    I disabled and deleted the plugin, but she’s still somehow marked as a Bozo and her posts aren’t showing up to anyone except for her.

    If you add “?view=all” to the end of a URL with her topic/post in it, her comments then show up.

    I tried DarkGrave’s suggestion to remove these lines from bb-settings.php:

    require( BBPATH . BBINC . ‘bozo.php’);

    &&

    require( BBPATH . BBINC . ‘akismet.php’);

    Bozo – what are the triggers?

    But those lines weren’t in my settings file.

    I also deleted the meta record from bb_usermeta, but that didn’t help either.

    In reply to: Using Sticky Post

    @johnhiler

    There are two types of stickies: you can stick a post to the top of its particular forum, and you can stick a post to the top of all the forums.

    For example, say you have a bbPress install with one forum: Forum A.

    * If you sticky a post in Forum A, the sticky post will appear at the top of boards.domain.com/forum/ForumA (but not at the top of boards.domain.com).

    * If you “stick to front” that same post, it will appear at the top of boards.domain.com (but not at boards.domain.com/forum/ForumA)

    From what you described, I’m guess the post has been stuck to the frontpage and not to the forum. Unstick it and then re-stick it but this time not to front.

    Hope that helps!

    How would a list like that handle forums with lots of members?

    @johnhiler

    One note: the big advantage (to me) of using a Google custom search engine is that it automatically adds textads so I can make a little revenue:

    http://www.weddingbee.com/search/?cx=002282152532121065906%3Ar3acndkexqa&cof=FORID%3A10&q=tuxedo&sa.x=0&sa.y=0#1382

    Just mentioning it, in case it’s possible to support textads as part of a search engine results page!

    bbPress supports full exporting of your data into XML or other formats. Does vBulletin have robust importing tools? If so, this should be pretty straightforward!

    URLs of each topic/thread may change though… unless you can get the two softwares to generate similar URLs.

    Lester Chan has written a really good plugin along these lines for WordPress:

    https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-email/

    It’s GPL, so maybe it’s something that could be adapted for bbPress?

    @johnhiler

    Member

    Yah it just happened to me as well. It’s definitely a broad issue… I wonder if anyone from bbPress reads these forums regularly?

    @johnhiler

    Ah neat… it kinda sounds like something that could power the Slashdot frontpage?

    @johnhiler

    I like that few vs. many authors split… that’s a good way to put it.

    One implication of that difference in focus is spam filtering. It’s easy to use Akismet to filter both boards topics and comments in bbPress… it’s harder to use Akismet to filter blog posts in WordPress (Akismet tends to focus on filtering blog comments, not blog posts).

    That’s not to say you couldn’t get Akismet working on blog posts! I just haven’t seen any existing plugins that pull that off…
