BB User problems

Published on September 3rd, 2007 by

I have a few concerns, which I’d like an opinion on:

  1. Some new members get the title ‘keymaster’, which I change/delete/inactivate to something less worrying.
  2. The total member list is quoted as 314, whereas I have approx 80 registered members
  3. Since the last upgrade the Censor plugin has ceased to function.

Any suggestions as to what problems I might be experiencing…?

Windows platform to linux

Published on September 3rd, 2007 by

Question for those who might know.

I presently use a Windows system and I would like to host my own website. I know about EasyPHP but I have heard of LAMP which refers to a Linux system. Can I change my platform from windows to linux? I read that this is more secure interms of data etc.

I’ve included everything I need in my config.php file, but I keep getting this error message:

There doesn’t seem to be a config.php file. I need this before we can get started. Open up config-sample.php, fill in your details, and save it as config.php.

I have the config.php file right there in the /bb-admin directory.

Somebody help!

Akismet

Published on September 2nd, 2007 by

Hi guys.

I haven’t been running bbPress long, but I’ve had this one problem with Akismet so far, that freaked me out. In that I have no idea why it happens.

I had a user last night sign up, go straight to a thread where users post their myspace pages, and post his. And bam, Akismet said spam, and bbpress said “bozo”.

Every subsequent post by this guy was held back as spam. I finally had the presence of mind to edit his profile and saw he was marked as a bozo. I changed the 1 to 0, thinking naturally that it was a logical flag, which indeed it is, but still every new post by this guy was getting marked as spam. I went into mysql and queried bb_usermeta with his user_id, and saw there was an is_bozo = 0 in there. I deleted that row, but still, all new posts by him were getting marked as spam. And the bozo thing wasn’t returning.

Eventually I disabled Akismet. Now, naturally, there are no posts getting marked as spam. But I had to re-enable Akismet because there were still a couple of posts I hadn’t marked as “not spam”, and when Akismet isn’t installed, you can’t mark things as spam/not spam.

I’m running my forum with a few people (around 10) in it at the moment, just to test it out before I start advertising it more. So it’s not a huge problem, but the point is it really freaked me out that this could happen on a daily basis to alot of users if I had Akismet turned on and a bunch of new registrations.

Anyone have any ideas?

login-form.php template doesn’t work

Published on September 2nd, 2007 by

Perhaps it’s that I’m using ThemePress, but styling the login doesn’t work. I suppose I’ll have to actually edit the file, but it’s a file that shouldn’t cause upload trouble. I don’t want to have to do that much though.

Also, how do I change the register/login link at the bottom of a post if one’s not logged in to a little form itself? I can’t find this in my theme, and I’d like to change that.

It’s important to keep things on the WP side since I’m using MU.

I didn’t find another post on this by the way. And thanks for any help!

Thought I would show off my new bbPress powered forums.

They’re here: http://www.qforquack.com/forum/

I was trying to keep it with my design at my main page.

Posting to bbpress.org/forums is slow again (host issue?)

Published on September 1st, 2007 by chrishajer

There was a point in the past where the posts were taking so long to appear after hitting “Send Post” that they would time out but actually made it through, and then you would double post. That was resolved by moving bbpress.org to some new hardware, I think, or maybe the servers were just getting hammered.

408 Error on this forum when removing a favorite

Anyway, a new post (reply or new topic) used to take 1 or 2 seconds here and the feedback under the post would say “Posted 2 seconds ago #”. Now, a few have been really slow, and the last one I did says “Posted 17 seconds ago #”.

Maybe the server is overloaded or something else is wrong. Doesn’t really matter much to me but I think it is a symptom of a problem that should not be ignored or at least explained.

Changing the displayed user role on post pages

Published on August 31st, 2007 by tbronson

Two questions:

1. How can I not display the user role that appears under the username in the topic entry posts (e.g. “Key Master”)?

2. How can I change the title “Key Master” to something else?

Thanks!
