In reply to: Trying to use ‘bbpress’ theme in bbpress
I checked your stylesheet… it appears to not exist?
http://englishforuniversity.com/forum/bbpress/my-templates/bbpress-forum/style2.css?v=8
In reply to: Trying to use ‘bbpress’ theme in bbpresschmod is a way to change your file permission settings. More on that here.
In reply to: bbPress v1’s eventual releaseI am also sticking with v 0.9x for now! If your site is working nicely now and you’re happy with how it’s going… there’s no need to change your platform.
I hear that version 1 will have better post-level meta data support? That’s exciting and something I’m looking forward to. Other than that, this is what Sam wrote about version 1.0:
“There is no feature list as such. In fact, you will find that not much has changed at this stage on the front end. The main difference is that we are now using the BackPress library for core functionality. There are some other “under the hood” changes as well, like the introduction of WordPress’ taxonomy structure for storing tags and the creation of a global meta table which can store metadata for forums, topics and posts as well as site options. The global meta table can also store custom meta from plugins.
The major cosmetic difference is the new admin area which is modelled on WordPress.”
In reply to: Standalone installation?Nope! bbPress has its own signin, and its own theme/plugin system… you can use it as a standalone no problem!
In reply to: Unresolved Private ForumsCan you check to see if you have the latest version of “My Views” installed?
https://bbpress.org/plugins/topic/my-views/
You need at least 0.1.1 for Hidden Forums to work properly… I remember I used to get an error from Hidden Forums until I upgraded the My Views plugin.
If that’s not the issue, I’m officially stumped!
In reply to: Registration on bbPress boardsThis plugin gives registrants a math test before they sign up:
https://bbpress.org/plugins/topic/human-test/
This lets you easily delete spammy signups (you should back up database first, of course!):
https://bbpress.org/plugins/topic/mass-delete-users/
This is a bit hardcore, but you can actually hold new registrations for approval:
https://bbpress.org/plugins/topic/approve-user-registration/
Hopefully one of those will do the trick!
In reply to: Unresolved Private ForumsAh strange – for me, Private Forums and Hidden Forums provided an identical experience to the end-user… the only difference was the security loophole. I went to letsdoo.org to see if I could spot the functionality difference, but wasn’t able to see it…
A word of warning, btw – Private Forums would often retain its security for long periods of time… then randomly, changing an admin setting would revert all of its forums to public. I could never figure out the exact trigger – after the second or third time it happened, I gave up on it and upgraded to HF.
In reply to: Unresolved Private ForumsI used to use Private Forum myself, and that drove me crazy!
I switched to Hidden Forums, which has all the same features without that annoying quirk (where the private forum opens up when the admin is touched):
https://bbpress.org/plugins/topic/hidden-forums/
I’ve been using Hidden Forums for months now, and the private data has been secure the entire time… it definitely seems more robust and secure.
In reply to: Major problem with Topic PostsTwo questions:
1) Do you still get that error if you deactivate the bbPress Latest Discussion plugin?
2) Did you try upgrading the bbPress Latest Discussion plugin to the latest version?
In reply to: Major problem with Topic PostsJust noticed – according to the developer notes on the bbPress Latest Discussion plugin, earlier versions of the plugin were using the “wrong table name for 9.0.4”:
https://bbpress.org/plugins/topic/bbpress-latest-discussion-for-wp/other_notes/
This has been fixed in the latest version of the plugin (1.3.9). I noticed you mentioned you were using version 1.3 along with bbPress 9.0.4, which would create a problem… I’m guessing that upgrading to the latest version of the plugin might resolve the issue?
In reply to: Major problem with Topic PostsIf you deactivate the bbPress Latest Discussion plugin, does the error go away?
In reply to: Major problem with Topic PostsJust trying to get my head wrapped around the issue: so bbPress is working fine for you… it’s just that when you activate the bbPress Latest Discussion plugin, you get the error you mentioned?
In reply to: One bbpress per blog in wordpress muI’m guessing that Automattic built something similar to bbMU for TalkPress?
https://bbpress.org/blog/2009/04/talkpress-and-bbpress/
Not sure what if they plan to release that or not… I’m guessing they will, but that it’s not a huge priority?
In reply to: bbPress PollsAh that must be it… kingscast, did you drag all the files directly into the /bb-plugins/ folder?
The files should all go into a /bbpress-polls/ subfolder instead… including the icon.png one.
ps while you’re at it, you probably want to put the plugins into a /my-plugins/ folder instead of the /bb-plugins/ one…
Btw, do you need to have only one point of signin? I used to do that too (only use the bbPress signin, in my case)… but eventually I gave up and started using both. There has been no confusion or technical problems from users, and each signin does a good job with its side of the *Press fence!
In reply to: bbpress + mailman integrationThis plugin should send all moderators/admins an email whenever a post is made by any non-moderator/admin:
https://bbpress.org/plugins/topic/moderator-new-post-notification/
Or alternatively, this one should hold all posts in moderation until a moderator/admin has approved it:
https://bbpress.org/plugins/topic/bb-moderation-hold/
Hope one of those does the trick for you!
I’m not expert enough to give advice on what hooks to use… but it might be worth checking out this related plugin (and ck’s recent comment about its general approach):
https://bbpress.org/plugins/topic/force-login/
Good luck!
In reply to: RC1 in subfolder New Post link redirect not working_ck_ mentioned something about a higher-level htaccess file that sounded promising:
https://bbpress.org/forums/topic/add-new-goes-to-404-for-logged-out-users#post-31541
Htaccess files vary from server to server, which may explain why you’re seeing this but other users aren’t consistently hitting the same issue… could that be a potential source of the issue?
In reply to: bbPress PollsI couldn’t see what you meant while using Firefox… but I switched to Safari for the Mac, and see blue boxes with question marks!
I think Safari shows that blue box with the question box when it can’t load an image. I found a discussion forum that talked about it here – there are some links to screenshots showing the issue:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6648604
I right-clicked on the blue box and asked to view the icon… and it showed me this image url:
http://kingscast.net/forums/bb-plugins/icon.png
Is it possible there’s a missing file? My version of bbPress polls displays an icon with a similar url when there’s a poll:
http://boards.weddingbee.com/my-plugins/bbpress-polls/icon.png
http://boards.weddingbee.com/view/polls
My guess is that if you move your icon.png file to under /bb-plugins/, the image will show up and your blue boxes will disappear?
In reply to: RC1 in subfolder New Post link redirect not workingThere was a similar report here and we weren’t able to figure it out:
https://bbpress.org/forums/topic/add-new-goes-to-404-for-logged-out-users
We did narrow it down to most probably an htaccess issue. In the end, the user just hardcoded the Add New link… which actually worked pretty well.
In reply to: Request to the experienced – what anti-spam tools?I also use the Human Test plugin, and find it invaluable for preventing spammer from joining.
I also use Akismet though. It comes in handy, because my forum has human users who like to promote their websites (it’s a wedding website, and there are lots of wedding vendors). So the Human Test plugin wouldn’t catch those guys.
Basically – if you have human spammers, then a system which can “learn” who is spamming (either through Akismet or through a Bozo system) is critical. If your spammers are just bots, than Human Test is more than enough!
Re: the Bozo thing though… I had too many problems with that, and ended up disabling it. It may work better now… I gave up on it a year or so ago.
Good luck!
In reply to: threaded forum ?I haven’t tried this one yet, but there’s a plugin that supports threaded comments:
https://bbpress.org/plugins/topic/threaded-posts/
Maybe worth trying out?
In reply to: Help us get bbPress reinstated on Wikipedia!Sure, I’d be glad to help rewrite and edit info on bbPress.org on a separate site – as well as contribute to a codex wiki.
But just to be clear: I’m not attempting to evangelize bbPress on Wikipedia. I think of Wikipedia as an fairly comprehensive encyclopedia, and as such it should have an article on software like bbPress. Some outside references would help on that front, which is where the impetus for this post came from.
Just let us know how we can help with the copy editing and codex writing, and I’d be glad to pitch in!
In reply to: Help us get bbPress reinstated on Wikipedia!Wikipedia isn’t a promotional brochure… it’s an encyclopedia that captures the state of knowledge on a given subject. We can definitely write up that Automattic skipped the last alpha/beta and moved up the RC… that would just be part of the article.
I agree that Automattic staff should focus on whatever it is that they do. I’m just a user though, and I’d love to see the current state of bbPress captured on Wikipedia (especially since so many other message board apps are on there).
Anyone seen any mainstream articles on bbPress out there? Would love a few more before I resubmit the article… thanks!
In reply to: Help us get bbPress reinstated on Wikipedia!I agree! This is Wikipedia’s policy, not my own… they are really conservative when it comes to sources.
WordPress gets a lot of press on tech news sites!
http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Anews.cnet.com+wordpress
bbPress really gets almost none though… it’s kinda shocking. Even BuddyPress gets more press!
