    What about bbpress 2.0?

    http://bbpress.wordpress.com/files/2009/07/forum-front-page.png

I think that most of the common problems could be handled in 1 week.

Most recent problems I have with bbpress:

1st I need seo-optimized permalinks. (without “forums” and “topic”)

    2nd I need a facebook connect option

3rd Ineed a cool template simliar to sam bauers bbpress 2.0 template.

Whit this I would be happy.

There where only some attemps to solve the problem with the permalinks. There is also a plugin for this but there are some small problems which an expert could solve within minutes. The same for fb-connect. An expert could solve the problem within minutes.

Regarding the bbpress 2.0 template I don’t now how long it could take to get it work. But with that bbpress would be excellent.

For most other things there are already some plugins…some just need to be updated to the current bbpress version. Thats all. (in my view.)

The bbpress 2.0 template looks nice.

The new order with the forums on the left site and the recent discussions on the right site is excellent. Hope that it will be published soon.

Well the support here is very poor. When you ask something you hardly ever receive help. Sometimes you even get an impolite answer. Is this the way you guys try to get new bbpress-fans?

There was already the same kind of treatment when I asked for a way to install a facebook connect option. Answer was: It’s no priority and therefore no help.

Kevin, the thing is that I have several facebook groups. Each group has its own forum. What I want is to bring all those groups together in my forum. Each group forum would become a category in my bbpress forum. I’d like to invite the people of some facebook groups to join my forum. I belief that they would login if they could login with their facebook login.

Maybe it works, maybe not. It’s try and error. What’s wrong with that?

    Merry Christmas

Kevin, before I changed from SMF to bbpress I checked the extensions. I use the following plugins:

    Activated:

    allow images

    image rezizer

    bbvideo

    Bavatars

    BBcode Buttons Toolbar

    BBcode Lite

    bbPM

    bbpress signatures

    bbpress smilies

    bbpress user directory

    bozo users

    members online

    Not activated:

    Askimet (do not like it)

Remove topic forum (unfortunately there is no updated version, it would be a cool thing for users who like SEO-friendly pretty urls)

open-ID (no facebook login and does cause problems with the current bbpress version; wait until its updated)

bbpress polls (causes some problems with my template)

bb topic views (did not find out how to change the language; does not work with poedit and in the files I did not fiend the word “views” so I cannot translate it in german)

ignore user (needs to be updated for the current bbpress version)

All this plugins are nice but with all this bbpress is ways apart from SMF. Thats why former members complaint about the change from SMF to bbpress. SMF allowed to write drafts before posting and other things not mentioned yet…

Regarding the spam problem: SMF and wordpress did solve that problem (wordpress has a lot of good spam protection plugins as well..no need for askimet). I have a pr 5 page and no problems with spam. Register option 3 usually is secure enough. Email-address needs to be proved and there is a captcha-code. If this is not enough you can use register option 4 (member approval) With member approval the admin has to activate new members. With this spam can be avoided. Further SMF had a sophisticated bozo-user ban protection. You could ban by member-name, ban by IP-Number, ban by email address etc.

Regarding the design of the new forum:

The new forum design is better than the design of the old forum. I am not a designer, therefore I don’t think like a designer. I am somebody who likes to have the overview. The new theme is better to keep the overview. On the top you have the latest posts. Beneath you have the different categories and subcategories. This structure is easy to understand. Further the new design allows me to place more ads. Also I work with a drop down menu. Did you use it? It helps too to keep the overview.

    Kevin, you can check yourself:

    Old forum:

    http://www.dailytalk.ch/forums/index.php

(I had pretty urls before but I removed them when I moved this forum into another folder.)

    New forum:

    http://www.dailytalk.ch/forum/

The old forum had a tinymce-editor with a lot of cool features…drop-down menu for font-size, drop-down menu for different font-style, drop-down menu for different font-color, you could put some letters up (for example “CO2” you could write with the 2 higher than the other letters and also deeper etc.) movies, pictures, links, quotes with name of the original author, message function to reporte abusive messages to the moderators, you could temporary ban members, you could move posts from one topic to another in a very easy and very nice way, sophisticated privat messaging, high security level no spam, you could in an easy way change the login requirements, sophisticated admin-section, admins could see the IP-Number of the visitors, very easy mod (=plugins) upload through integrated ftp-upload, ssi-functions and so on….

The change to bbpress was not an easy decision for me. In my opinion bbpress is still an adventure. Many bbpress-projects are on release candidate level. I used SMF for 3 years and was happy. The problem is that I also have blogs on wordpress and wordpress mu. I had some problems with integration of SMF into wordpress. There are certainly some very old bridges but the different codings didn’t make it easy to me. I integrated SMF with SSI-Functions to wordpress…but I think that because of the similiar coding bbpress is much easier to integrate into wordpress. Thats why I finally decided to give bbpress a chance. I’m somebody who likes to try out new or other things. ;-)

@hpguru, what you say is not true at all!!! I never ever had problems with spam when I used SMF!!! SMF offers different register opportunities. They have in the admin-section a so called registration management which offers four different options for registration:

    1) Registration Disabled:

Disables the registration process, which means that no new members can register to join your forum.

    2) Immediate Registration

New members can login and post immediately after registering on your forum.

    3) Member Activation

When this option is enabled any members registering to the forum will have a activation link emailed to them which they must click before they can become full members

    4) Member Approval

This option will make it so all new members registering to your forum will need to be approved by the admin before they become members.

Further they have captcha-codes which need to be entered in a registration field. (You can even change the level of those codes. They have different difficulty-levels).

New updates are shown in the admin section…is very simliar to wordpress and you can easy update with integrated ftp-upload.

Before bbpress I used SMF (Simpe Machines Forum) http://www.simplemachines.org/. SMF is also open source and it offers much more features than bbpress and it has much more developer. I changed to bbpress for two reasons:

I searched for something which I could better integrate into wordpress and I thought that wordpress and bbpress are more SEO friendly than SMF and Tinyportal.

When I changed from SMF to bbpress I lost about 50% of my previous forum members. It’s because bbpress doesn’t offer as much features than SMF. Some members complaint because of this, thats why I know it.

To me a forum is a place where people meet to talk or discuss with each other. It doesn’t need to be a community.

If it is a community facebook connect could be a way to enlarge it.

@chris and kevin, I do not understand what you want to tell me? Shall I stop to use bbpress and just use facebook instead?

Do you think that the time for forums is over?

I just want to use the facebook network to promote my blog and my forums thats all.

Facebook connect would be very useful. I have about 600 facebook friends….unfortunately they don’t want to join my bbpress forum. They prefer my facebook group forums. That’s the problem. When I post a topic in my bbpress forum on my website only few people will reply. When I post the same topic on facebook some hundred people reply.

When I could offer them an easy login with facebook connect the chance that they would visit my forum more often would be higher. Thats why I need facebook connect.

Open-ID is something for developpers but not for simple facebook users.

“Please vote for features which aren’t available yet”

There is only a Tinymce-Editor available but its not compatible with the current bbpress-edition and its not what I am looking for. bbpress should use exactly the same editor as it’s used in wordpress. This would be a further integration step. It is not really nice to use 2 different editors for the forum and for the blog. Therefore please vote for WYSIWYG-EDITOR. The WYSIWYG-EDITOR should contain buttons for links and pictures

Please also vote for FACEBOOK-CONNECT. (The OPEN-ID Plugin does not work with the current bbpress-version and it doesn’t offer facebook-connect as the author is waiting till facebook will join the open-id-project. This may be in 2 years which is a very long time.

I really can’t understand why most people voted for “integration with wordpress” and “anonymouse posting” because bbpress is already integrated in wordpress and it exists already a plugin for anonymouse posting. Please vote for features which aren’t available yet!

    My favourites are:

    1. WYSIWYG-Editor

    2. Facebook-Connect

Hi, what about the theme I am using?

I have little knowledge in webdesign. Therefore I just modified the Kakumei-Theme as good as I could.

I was looking for a simple theme which is userfriendly, offers a lot of opportunities for google ads and an overview over the different categories (=main forums).

It also has a drop down menu. If you move with the cursor on the menu to forum you will see some submenus which direct you to the different categories. In my opinion an easy way to keep the overview.

Problem: I have no idea if it looks well on all browsers and all different screens. I only tested it with FF, Safari and IE7 and with the screen of my laptop.

Another problem: I had to remove the footer because it moved to the top of the page and I wasn’t able to keep it at the bottom.

Further I am looking for a way to show the last authors avatars on the topic and discussion boards of the front page and the forums pages.

Hi, I’ve just followed your instructions and was also able to remove “forum” and “topic” from the urls.

But something is wrong because the pages cannot be found. This is my rewrite code (it is a bit different from your code because I am using the newest version of bbpress):

    # BEGIN bbPress

    Options -MultiViews

    <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>

    RewriteEngine On

    RewriteBase /forum/

    Options +FollowSymlinks

    RewriteRule ^page/([0-9]+)/?$ /index.php?page=$1 [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^forum/([^/]+)/page/([0-9]+)/?$ forum.php?id=$1&page=$2 [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^forum/([^/]+)/?$ /forum.php?id=$1 [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^forum/?$ [R=302,L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^topic/([^/]+)/page/([0-9]+)/?$ /topic.php?id=$1&page=$2 [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^topic/([^/]+)/?$ /topic.php?id=$1 [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^topic/?$ /forum/ [R=302,L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^tags/([^/]+)/page/([0-9]+)/?$ tags.php?tag=$1&page=$2 [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^tags/([^/]+)/?$ tags.php?tag=$1 [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^tags/?$ tags.php [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^profile/([^/]+)/page/([0-9]+)/?$ profile.php?id=$1&page=$2 [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^profile/([^/]+)/([^/]+)/?$ profile.php?id=$1&tab=$2 [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^profile/([^/]+)/([^/]+)/page/([0-9]+)/?$ profile.php?id=$1&tab=$2&page=$3 [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^profile/([^/]+)/?$ profile.php?id=$1 [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^profile/?$ profile.php [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^view/([^/]+)/page/([0-9]+)/?$ view.php?view=$1&page=$2 [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^view/([^/]+)/?$ view.php?view=$1 [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^rss/?$ rss.php [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^rss/topics/?$ rss.php?topics=1 [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^rss/forum/([^/]+)/?$ rss.php?forum=$1 [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^rss/forum/([^/]+)/topics/?$ rss.php?forum=$1&topics=1 [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^rss/topic/([^/]+)/?$ rss.php?topic=$1 [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^rss/tags/([^/]+)/?$ rss.php?tag=$1 [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^rss/tags/([^/]+)/topics/?$ /forum/rss.php?tag=$1&topics=1 [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^rss/profile/([^/]+)/?$ rss.php?profile=$1 [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^rss/view/([^/]+)/?$ /forum/rss.php?view=$1 [L,QSA]

    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f

    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d

    RewriteRule ^.*$ /forum/index.php [L]

    </IfModule>

    # END bbPress

Probably I made something wrong with point four where you say that the lines 46 and 48 have to be switched. What do I actually have do do there?

Quote: “4. Open up bb-post.php at the root of your bbPress install and simply switch lines number 46 and 48”

    Is it this code?

    $link = get_post_link($post_id);

    $topic = get_topic( $topic_id, false );

The big advantage of bbpress is the easy integration in wordpress. There are much better standalones on the web. For example SMF with which I am currently working.

The thing is that I am looking for a forum which I can easy integrate in buddypress without a bridge. I found it with bbpress. Unfortunately bbpress doesn’t offer a wysiwyg-toolbar and it doesn’t offer many of the features which are standard in other forums.

So in my opinion developers should include a wysiwyg-standard toolbar as it is already standard in wordpress and other features for images and videos.

I’ve seen a plugin for a wysiwyg editor. Unortunately it’s not new and the toolbar may not work with the newest bbpress version.

I am currently running a wordpress blog in combination with a Simple Machine Forum (SMF). I would prefer bbpress because it is easier to integrate in wordpress and buddypress. That’s the advantage of bbpress.

The advantage ob SMF is that they offer much more features. You habe a tinymce editor, you can post pictures, upload images and post clips from youtube, googlevideo and similiar services.

It would be excellent if there were a way to integrate wordpress-plugins into bbpress.

Further please have a look on pretty-urls.

    This is too long:

    http://xxx.com/groups/movie-friends/forum/topic/blabla/

    This would be much better:

    http://xxx.com/forum/politics/obamas_health_care_reform/

    Just website/forum/category-name/topic_title
