More Tag Support

Published on June 10th, 2005 by Michael Adams (mdawaffe)

Support for tag removal, renaming, destruction and merging has been added in bbPress.

Users can remove their own tags from any post, and moderators can remove any tags from any post. Moderators with sufficient permissions (user_type >= 2) can also rename tags, destroy tags (completely remove them from the database), and merge one tag into another.

Tags and Pretty URIs

Published on April 27th, 2005 by Matt Mullenweg

bbPress now has rudimentary tag support and gorgeous URIs that don’t require mod_rewrite. You can see both in action on the WordPress forums and I’ll be revving the tag support significantly in the coming weeks. There have also been numerous profile and performance enhancements you may want to check out.

Reset Passwords

Published on March 5th, 2005 by Matt Mullenweg

Users can now reset passwords in bbPress, in fact we’ve updated how the system deals with failed logins completely. Feedback is a lot better now if the username or password is wrong.

Many Updates

Published on March 1st, 2005 by Matt Mullenweg

I’ve caught up on most of the open bbPress bugs, so if you’re running bbPress somewhere I would recommend upgrading to the next nightly. Most notable, users can now edit their profiles and passwords and you can now override cookies to allow for easier integration.

MySQLi Support

Published on December 31st, 2004 by Matt Mullenweg

Thanks to Ticket #7 from isharra, bbPress now has mysqli support. I can’t really tell too big a difference in the speed between mysqli and mysql, but every bit helps. If you run MySQL 4.1 and have mysqli support compiled into PHP then the improved functions are automatically used. If not, don’t worry about it.

Installation Instructions

Published on December 31st, 2004 by Matt Mullenweg

Neil Patel has written some more detailed installation instructions for those of you having trouble getting started. It’s a little bit of a pain now, but hey, it’s alpha. We haven’t even gotten to the perpetual beta stage yet. I happy to say that with a little more coding this can be taken down to two or three steps, like the WordPress installation.

Lean and Mean

Published on December 29th, 2004 by Matt Mullenweg

Now that the official announcement is up there has been a significant amount of traffic here, so now might be a good time to address a few common questions.

Can I integrate users/login with WordPress?

I see no reason why bbPress and WordPress can’t use identical user table structures, which would make integrating between the two relatively easy. Out of the box they’ll still use different cookie names, just because things could be messy otherwise, but changing that as well wouldn’t be too hard for people implementing unified systems.

Will this be better than phpBB and PunBB?

It’s not going to be better or worse, just different. Right now it is at alpha so it has significantly less mature setup/administration tools.

How will it stay small?

bbPress uses the same plugin system as WordPress, so my goal is to keep the core as small and fast as humanly possible and let everything else happen in plugins.

Can I help out?

Absolutely! Join the mailing list and start filing some tickets.

Is it ready for me to use?

If you have to ask, probably not yet. You should only download bbPress at this point if you’re interested in contributing to the project. Making the installation and setup more user-friendly is one of the first priorities though.

Is it Free?

As a bird. 🙂

Nightlies Fixed

Published on December 29th, 2004 by Matt Mullenweg

Sorry about that, I was so tired last night I forgot to set up the nightly directory after linking to it. That’s fixed now, so download away.

Site Revamp

Published on December 29th, 2004 by Matt Mullenweg

Well I spruced up the site a bit, fleshed out the sections a little bit and integrated Trac into the design and layout a little more. Start filing those tickets!

Two WordPress superstars, Craig and Podz, actually got to the mailing list before I did and now some nice conversations have started.
