The next installation in the bbPress 1.0 alpha series has been released. bbPress 1.0 alpha 2 introduces new features and fixes most of the issues raised by testers from the previous release.
A lot of the features were covered in a previous post. You can view the changes in bbPress between 1.0-alpha-1 and 1.0-alpha-2, as well as the changes that have been made to BackPress between revision 109 and 161.
The XML-RPC functionality now built into bbPress 1.0 alpha has made possible a new plugin for WordPress called “bbPress Live“. Currently this plugin can grab a list of forums and latest topics for display on a WordPress blog. Two configurable widgets are provided to pop the information into sidebars. Future versions of the plugin will allow WordPress posts to be copied to a bbPress forum, much like the bbSync plugin does for earlier versions of bbPress. The difference is that bbPress Live does not require the bbPress and WordPress sites to be on the same server, as all interaction is via XML-RPC calls rather than direct database queries.
Can take bbSync plugin off website sometime then – still broken and if it’s succeeded by a much better system, I won’t bother rewriting. Would probably be better to take it off, even.
@fel64
No need to remove it from the site, it is still a solution for people running 0.x versions. The functionality it provided, and the issues which have cropped up in bbSync were major drivers for the addition of XML-RPC into bbPress, and the creation of bbPress Live.
Nice. I always love this kind of forum. Simple and useful.
awesome, the best and slickest forum for wordpress.. thanks guys 🙂
With XML-RPC functionality, does this mean I would be able to use something like ScribeFire or a third party blogging tool in order to post to BBpress forums similar to how Windows Live Write can publish directly to a configured blog while also being able to access the tags and categories of the post?
@Jeffro2pt0
Those tools aren’t directly compatible as bbPress’ XML-RPC API is unique and not compatible with the known blogging APIs.
We could possibly introduce a compatibility layer in the future that would allow limited cross-functionality with these tools.
Any estimate as to when bbPress 1.0 will be released?
Also, what comes after alpha 2? Beta 1? RC1?
How many more releases until 1.0?
Hi,
I was just considering BBpress to run a forum with WordPress but I want one central database for registered users, logins, etc. Do the instructions about WordPress integration at the following link still apply?
Whoops forgot the link in the above comment:
https://bbpress.org/documentation/integration-with-wordpress/
@Bharat
The database integration instructions will still work, cookie integration requires the setting of two new cookie salts.
Just to clarify, it is generally not recommended that we use alpha versions on a live site, correct?
@Adam
Not if it is a critical site, no.
epic.
Fantastic – I installed it in about 5 minutes and the logins integrate with WordPress.
Good work guys!
i love the simplicity of this forum board, but will be it have many plugins like wordpress too?

Hmm, I wish I could participate in a forum without having to actually be on the forum and doing it like the XML RPC functions for blogs seems as though it wouldn’t be that hard to accomplish.
This is great news. I’ve been reading about the alpha version and I’m very excited about it. I use bbpress on a site where the blog is the main site and further integration is exactly what I’m after, but I don’t like to use lots of plugins. I am definitely looking forward to being able to use blog posts in the forum, and put forum topics on the blog. Thanks so much for all the hard work you do!
What about SEO friendly URLs?
WIll it be possible?
