I had a feeling there would be an easier way than a new plugin. Add this to your theme’s functions.php:

function my_pagination( $args ) {
	$args['prev_text'] = 'previous';
	$args['next_text'] = 'next';
	return $args;
}
add_filter( 'bbp_topic_pagination', 'my_pagination' );
