  • Yah … if I did not care, and if I did not see the potential, I would not bother saying anything.

My position has always been … for a LONG time … a grave disappointment that BBpress was the poor cousin of the Automattic family, kept starved and locked up in the basement.

I know the amazing work of people like _ck_ etc trying to fix things but 100s of wasted hours over the years …. I know the reality too.

Especially for those of us trying to support multi-language communities … which is a whole other bugbear.

    • So, excusing my unpaid exhaustion with it all … are these WP 3 MU sites you are talking about “playing nicely”?

BB in BP is a whole other beast and I was interested to read it was going the way of a plugin … which I take to mean it will remain a very minimal device … versus the idea of ‘the community’ forking it as a new stand alone.

    • How that will stand up against myBB, Simple:Press, WP-United and others, makes me wonder if it is really the right choice for someone with $10,000,000 to go showing with.

BP looks like a bad rail crash right now and is not for general users who have become accustomed to other standards (… or at least, a good looking train which has been involved in a a bad rail crash. Give it its dues.)

I read your posts elsewhere Kevin … top marks. You hit the nail right on the head many, many times. And you did not even start on the whole Buddypress angle.

So what is the state of the nation… does WP3 and BBP do anything?

What are the updates to make it all work in 2.9.1 and above?

    Thanks

I find that Buddypress does not add any members blogs that existed before I installed Buddypress.

For example, if you go to Members > User > Blogs (http://example.com/members/example_user/blogs/ … does it show a pre-existing blog, or does it say something like, ‘this user has not made a blog yet’?

    Thanks

In reply to: Help out with bbPress

Sorry, I missed the discussion of this topic, I am not a developer and so excuse me if I have this wrong … but can I underline what seems to be a missing element across the board of WP/BB/BP products …

      an integrated search facility.

so that a search at the main portal recovers searches from ALL blogs, user pages, forum posts etc.

I say ‘main portal at least’ but I would have a filtered choice at every search bar, e.g. ‘just this user’ versus ‘whole site’.

Without an integrated search facility, without being able to find related content, it is pointless and frustrating. One may as well have a series of unrelated domain names with bespoke softwares and depend on Google. If the whole WP/BB/BP thing is about building community then those communities have to be linked. Without linking there is no community.

I am a great fan of the WP conceptual approach and am desperate to use and have BBpress work. I have been wasting weeks of my life trying repeatedly to make it all work together. It does not at present and it is deeply depressing.

It looks to me that it all needs to be integrated into one single application with the choice to switch on or off parts. That would also allow for the other big omission to be more easily addressed …

      multi-linguality

Let us not forget that English language users are actually a minority and help up to make our communities multi-racial.

It seems most of the Buddypress / WPMU / BBpress tutorial floating around the web are out of date now, e.g. they refer to separate bp-themes folders etc.

Is there any update for latest BBpress plus BP 1.1.2 …? I am most concerned about backwards recognition users that registered before BBpress was installed.

I found with BP/WPMU that there is a complete lack of backwards recognition and had to manually remake a number of blogs.

    Thanks.

Thanks. Sorry, that was my typo.

I have ‘define( ‘BB_LANG’, ‘ja’);’. The language files are installed and they are recognized.

I am trying to build in dual language support for the 1.0.1.

Its seems that neither bbPress Language Switcher by _ck_ nor User Languages by alex work on v.1.

Does anyone know if there is a work around for this?

Manually, I can define either, say, ‘ja’ or ‘en_US’ … but it does not seem possible to do any switching at all, either via user admin or Switcher bar.

I really am sorry to discover this as I was looking for dual language WordPress/bbPress integration and to be free of the bloated phpBB for ever.

    Thank you.
