Well that’s weird. The ‘Member’ role just recreated itself. All I did was tick ‘Allow BuddyPress Groups to have their own forums’ in the forum options and save-changes and ‘Repair BuddyPress Group Forum relationships’ in tools.

It doesn’t have the same capabilities that it had before. It has gained the edit-posts capability and has a few bbPress related capabilities.

Just tried updating to bbPress 2.2.2 on my site that has completely custom roles. All of my roles capabilities were left mostly unchanged but had all their bbPress capabilities removed. For some reason, the role I had called ‘Member’ got completely deleted and all users who had that role now display as having ‘none’ as their role. In the wp_usermeta table, users still have ‘member’ set as their role, but the role no longer exists in wp_user_roles in wp_options.

The forum roles appear to have been created correctly but all of my users (including Administrators) have no forum role at the moment. Strangely, Administrators still have complete control over the forums despite having no forum role or capabilities. I suppose this is because the Administrator role automatically has all capabilities?

What could have caused my Member role to be deleted? Is it safe for me to just copy it back into wp_user_roles in wp_options from the backup I have of the database? How can I assign all current users a forum role?

    Thanks in advance 🙂

Thank you for taking the time to fully explain what the system was like before and what has changed. Now I have a reasonable understanding of how the old and new systems work, I should be able to progress with fixing the problems I’ve got due to using completely custom roles.

Thanks for all the time and effort you put into bbPress and BuddyPress. They are great plugins and you do a great job. 🙂

I believe the 404 problem may be the same as the one described here – https://bbpress.org/forums/topic/bbpress-2-2-all-forums-now-return-page-not-found/

I will try to solution suggested there when I upgrade again. Thanks to Jennifer for explaining the things to try.

Does anyone know of a way that I could solve the problem that I have with permissions? I partially understand what is going wrong due to the way the new system works, but I wouldn’t have thought it should change the permissions for existing roles.

Beta means try it, hope for the best, and sob quietly if it all goes horribly wrong :)

I’ve been using the development versions for a couple of months now on a release site without any major issues so it should be more or less fine. Not sure whether to risk the BuddyPress beta though and I probably should update both at the same time…

Is there a way to let normal users post images on bbPress 2.1? Just discovered only admins can use <img> tags in replies.

Check your bbpress settings and wordpress media settings and make sure you have them both set to auto-embed videos.

It works for me by posting the short ‘share’ URL of the video (click share below the video on Youtube). However mine end up wider than the forum so I add ?&w=550 to the end of the URL to make it fit.

This is something I’ve wanted to do as well in the past. Just had a look to see if it is possible. You can sort of do it by creating a new topic yourself and then moving the reply to it from wp-admin.

bbPress should work fine on just about any theme. If you want to customise it, you’ll need to create a child theme. Don’t ask me how to do that, there are plenty of instructions available online.

However for getting a child theme to work with bbpress 2.1, look here – https://bbpress.org/forums/topic/bbpress-21-theme-compatibility/page/2

I would create a child theme with all the bbpress theme files. You can then edit everything there and you won’t lose your work with updates. Probably worth waiting for 2.1 to do this though as there are a number of theme changes.

Check out https://bbpress.org/forums/topic/bbpress-21-theme-compatibility/page/2 for some instructions on how to make bbpress 2.1 work with your child theme. About half way down.

I have my max width set to 500 pixels but the videos still post wider on the forums.

Videos keep to this limit when auto-embeded in Buddypress statuses, just not on the forums.

I think it depends whether or not you are going to customise the CSS of bbpress. 2.1 uses a table-less layout so you may have to redo some changes after updating.

If you aren’t changing the CSS, I can’t think of anything that would cause problems.

Are there currently any major issues that make it inappropriate for using in a release environment?

I know it is not recommended, but I’ve been using it for a bit on a release site without any issues and the new features are really nice. Especially the layout changes.

I’m using 2.1 on a release version of a site (yes, I know it’s not recommended), although we haven’t really started bringing in members yet.

The only issue I am having is that auto-embeded Youtube videos are too wide and go off the edge of the content part of the page.

My favourite feature is the new table-less layout. I can now use images for stickies and headers that don’t restart on each column.

Just discovered that All-in-One Event Calendar plugin was causing this. Now I need to find an alternative.

Tried it in 2.1. Still showing new posts as 2 hours freshness.

I’ve got the same issue on my forums which haven’t been imported from 1.x. They were however moved from a different domain to the current one along with the entire site and database.

New posts on mine appear as 2 hours old immediately.

Everything looks fine in the database – post time and meta last active time are correct and the same.
