I have a feature request, in case it hasn’t been brought up before (seems unlikely but never know…)

Normally all links in a bbP install open in the same browser window, but this takes everyone away from your forum when they click an external link.

I would like to request that a selectable feature to make all external links open with target=”_blank” (or equivalent) be added to bbP to prevent this. I’ve had a number of members mention that they wished links would open in a separate tab/window.

    Thanks for considering!

OK, whew… not something on my end that managed to corrupt all those files. Had me worried since nobody else seemed to mention them!

Got this from a site member…

“i have 2 pages of “favorites” and when i tried to go to the 2nd page of my favorites after clicking on my username, it redirects me to the home page”

Is this a bug? Has it been fixed?

Also what about my earlier report of the word “native” being at the top of many of the b3 files? What’s that about?

    Thanks,

    Jonathan

    Bug I believe…

If a topic is stuck to front, and that topic is closed, it is no longer stuck and doesn’t appear anywhere. It just vanishes.

Was editing my theme files to incorporate new stuff, and found that single-reply-edit.php says “native” at the top of the file, for no apparent reason that I can tell.

    Jonathan

EDIT: There are actually a whole bunch of files that say “native” at the top. Is this some sort of “tag” that is quietly removed from the pages at output time or something?

FYI I just got a bit more info from the user that was having this problem. Turns out it is NOT a forum error and is a WordPress specific error. He only gets it when commenting in the WP section of my site.

That’s one “downside” of sorts with the integrated forum plugin… users can’t tell what’s WordPress and what’s bbPress, if they aren’t real familiar with both.

Cool, glad to hear there might be a fix for this even if it is somewhat obscure.

And yeah, “too quickly”… I was gonna give you a pass on that one though… ;)

Just found what I think is a small bug.

If a member posts in a topic, and the admin splits that topic to move it to a new topic of its own, the “freshness” for that topic is still showing the latest poster as the other member, and they and their avatar are also still shown as the last person to post in that topic when viewing the topic.

OK, turns out he’s in Israel! So whatever timezone that is, I’m not sure. He’s an American so I had assumed he’s in the US but, obviously not.

Any idea how this could be causing the speed errors?

Also the grammar in that error message needs a little fix… “to” instead of “too”. :)

Excellent question… let me ask him and get back to you on that.

Yep I’m just gonna sit tight. Like I said, no user has screamed about it or anything so, I’ll just accept it for a little while longer.

Furious indeed… maybe they should rename this project “bbPress – the Faster & the Furiouser!” =)

Please no one eh? Now that’s a novel approach! LOL Does this mean if someone likes it, you’ve failed? ;)

Anyway, at least I know that I’m not missing something. I’ll go in and modify it as needed, or maybe hold off until beta 3. None of my users have mentioned it, but I noticed it and wanted to fix it.

    Thanks!

Not sure if this is a bug or what but I just noticed it.

The top level of the breadcrumbs is linking to whatever my blog front page is set to be. In my case, my site’s front page is called “Sales Page”, so all my breadcrumbs look like this:

Sales Page › Discussions › Beginners

When someone clicks on “Sales Page” they are taken to the root of my site, which is in fact my sales page but is definitely not the top level of the forums. I would expect it to be something like:

Forums Home › Discussions › Beginners

where “Forums Home” would link to mydomain.com/forums/ since my forums “page” is called “forums”.

Do I have a setting wrong somewhere maybe?

    Thanks,

Oh really? I didn’t realize that… for some reason I thought once it went beta, fixes were no longer available until the next beta was released. Thanks for correcting me on this, I’ll check out the trac version(s)!

Yep agreed on all points. Hopefully though it’s the content that trumps all right? ;)

Well it’s not so much a matter of censoring, it’s a question of security. Until I had them whitelist a rule in ModSecurity, I couldn’t post a lot of stuff in WordPress either, whether from admin or not. ModSec is treating certain words as SQL language and assuming they are an injection attack attempt. I’ve seen this problem before many times in the past but never realized what it was until this issue and subsequent conversation.

They’ve now whitelisted /topic/, /forum/, and /edit/ and that seems to have fixed this issue. I’m guessing this isn’t really something that can/should be fixed from within bbP itself, but if I’m wrong feel free to do so. :)

And though I personally believe that bbP is the way to go for my community, my users are used to PHPbb and VBulletin sites and so this already seems “weird” to them. Adding technical issues and using beta software isn’t really helping instill confidence but hey that’s my choice to do. They’re spoiled by forum solutions with all the bells & whistles that I’ve had to add with plugins for things like Private Messaging, showing unread topics, protecting content for members only, signatures, etc. This is of course by design, and though I’m essentially putting back in a lot of the stuff that bbP has intended to leave out, I believe I wouldn’t be happy with the lack of integration of any other forum solution within WP so… bbP it is!

They’ll get used to it, I just hope I don’t lose any because they can’t make the leap. Time will tell, and bbP keeps getting better with time. I hope my posts never suggest a lack of appreciation for this plugin and all the work you’re putting into it!

Yeah probably true, I’m just impatient. :) The host have whitelisted URLs beginning with /edit/ which has fixed existing posts that are being edited, but does not fix creation of new posts or replies.

For the moment, I’m having them whitelist /forum/ and /topic/ as well. If JJJ can suggest a better solution or fix to this, then I’ll just have them remove the whitelist rules. I’d certainly rather not have to override any security, but my members are getting annoyed and right now are “very unimpressed” with my choice of forum software.

Just because I find it interesting, here is the shortest string I could come up with that would trigger ModSec:

    create piece from scratch

Odd combination of words to trigger…

    Jonathan

    @tooltrainer

Yep I just found the same:

ModSecurity: Access denied with code 500 (phase 2). Pattern match “((select|grant|delete|insert|drop|alter|replace|truncate|update|create|rename|describe):space:+[A-Z|a-z|$

I’m guessing it’s my use of the word “create” in my example string.

Given how much my forum discusses code, I think I’m going to have no long term option but to relax ModSec. I’ve already asked the host to look into it so hopefully they come up with something.

Thanks for all your pointers as usual!

Really? Very interesting. I figured if anything that this showed it was NOT mod-sec, since there was no single problematic word, only when the words were used together in a complete string, was there a problem.

I also figured that since I can post the same content into a WP post without any issue, that it wouldn’t be mod-sec.

Anyway I’ll go look at the logs, I have root so should be able to find them myself. I try to avoid poking around outside of the webroots if I can help it but, sometimes ya gotta.

Will let you know if I uncover anything. Thanks for all your tips!

(and yeah I know I really *shouldn’t* be using bbP in a live site but it was the only forum option I could find that would integrate how I wanted and my site had to launch so… I’m rolling the dice!)

OK – this is bloody insane.

I cannot post the following line:

to create every single piece from scratch.

But I CAN post the following line:

to create every single piece from .

I can also post the following line:

    every single piece from scratch.

    and I can also post:

    scratch.

    But again, I can’t post:

to create every single piece from scratch.

    Somebody figure THAT one out.

    Jonathan

    @tooltrainer

Yeah I can paste the content into a post without any issue.

I’ll go through line by line until I find the offender(s), but if this is going to be a continued problem, I’m going to have to abandon bbP. If this is a bug I’m surprised nobody else is seeing it. :(

I have to amend what I said earlier. I just had another post that wouldn’t go through, so I turned on the slugs and tried to post it – no dice this time. Can’t post it with or without the slugs.

So… anyone have any ideas? Could it be mod-sec after all??

    Jonathan

    @tooltrainer

    Member

Well, sadly not solved… it works if I enable the various slugs in permalinks, but I definitely don’t want to do that so, I still need this to get looked at as something is wrong. JJJ offered to have a look at my install but I can’t seem to find any way to send him private information, I see no email info here and buddyPress doesn’t appear to have any Private Messaging function so…

JJJ, how can I send you private info on my site?

    Thanks!

    Jonathan

    @tooltrainer

    Member

Yeah, I’m thinking it’s not mod-sec anyway since adding the bbP slugs to the permalinks, meant I could post without any issue. So it’s definitely not a server-wide content filter of some kind.

I’m actually not even certain where they put the whitelist… I think it was in the firewall or something, somewhere I don’t have easy access to (and I’m dangerous at the command line LOL)
