What small change had the biggest impact on forum engagement?

I’ve been working on a community forum recently, and something I’ve noticed is that getting people to register isn’t the difficult part it’s encouraging them to return and participate consistently. A forum can have plenty of members, but without regular discussions it quickly starts to feel inactive.
For those who’ve managed a bbPress community for a while, what was one change that genuinely improved engagement? It could be something simple like reorganizing forum categories, improving navigation, changing how discussions were introduced, or encouraging first-time posters.
