Problems logging in

  • lucynixon

I have bbpress installed in a subdirectory (, with WordPress in the root, and I’m using a Private Forums plugin (among various others) and it was all working fine until this morning, when suddenly I am unable to login. I have two accounts, but can’t log in using either of them. (I have sent an email out to find out if I am the only one with this issue or if it is more widespread).

Symptoms are that I get the login page, so I login and am immediately presented with the same screen again.

I’ve tried disabling the Private Forums plugin, which makes the discussions visible, as you would expect but I still can’t log in, and I can’t post, so I’m not logged in ‘behind the scenes’as it were.

I’ve requested a new password, but that hasn’t helped.

I haven’t integrated with WordPress, I haven’t uploaded any new bbpress plugins, or run any upgrades. I am very puzzled.

So does anyone have any suggestions as to what might have changed, or what I can do to restore functionality?

What other plugins are you using, and what version of bbPress are you using?

Also – Try deleting all your cookies and dumping your cache. Firefox 3 has some weird quirks about cookies that forced me to do the purge recently to get everything working again.

Thanks, both, for your quick replies.

I tried deleting cookies and clearing cache, as Ipstenu suggests, and lo! I can log in again! I would never have thought of that as a solution …

It would also explain why others can log in; they must be using IE. Much as I love FF, this is very odd behaviour.

Thanks again – I’m delighted this had such a simple solution

One note: I was using Private Forums for several years, and it had an occasional bug where if I saved my admin settings… the private forums would intermittently become public! I had to check the private forums every day to make sure they hadn’t been compromised…

The Hidden Forum plugin seems much more stable since I switched to it a few weeks ago, and there are no reports that I’ve seen of similar behavior:

    Just a heads up!

Hmm, interesting. I did download Hidden Forum, but haven’t activated it. I’ll investigate – thanks.
