…will it work if you grab their IP address, go to Dashboard > Settings > Discussion > Comment Blacklist and drop it in there? Is that basically the same thing as clicking on the “spam” option when viewing the topic?

Actually, not yet. I’m working now on baking Akismet in for the final 2.0 release though.
