bbPress only works for admin or new users

    @paul-burwell

    Hi,

When a new user or admin tries to access the forum, it seems to work fine.

When an older user (role: participant) tries to access the forum, they get a 404 error (same URL).

Happens in base themes as well as my theme.

    Wordpress 4.3.1
    bbPress 2.5.8

Have tried the utilities to repair everything. Nothing seems to help.

Very frustrated and at a stand still. Any and all help is appreciated.

    Paul

Is it possible to purchase support to get this solved?

I had same problem and was able to fix it by changing status of each forum from private to public and then immediately back to private. I presume your forums are private.

    Hi,

Thanks for the idea but the forums are all public.

    Hi Paul,
Just to be 100% sure, you are on WP 4.3.1 and not 4.4 ?

I don’t know if it would work, but did you try making them private and then switch back to public?

    Hi mglasser,
That would be an option if Paul moved to 4.4 (and then maybe got back to 4.3.1), but if he never went to 4.4, then the issue is different.

No, have not updated to 4.4, still on 4.3.1.

Can you try to change a forum to private, save, back to public, save and then try to add a topic ?

    Nope, no go.

A logged out user can see all the forums, topics, etc.

A logged in user (who is not amongst the seven or so “new” users) can’t see anything and gets a 404 error.

For the ‘older’ users, can you try to switch them to another role and then back to the initial role (saving in between).
If that does not help, then the only thing I see is a probable update of a plugin that is causing the issue.
Could you please deactivate all plugins and then reactivate one by one to see which one is causing the issue ?
    Thanks, Pascal.

I tried changing one user to the role of Keymaster.

As Keymaster they can view the forums, post, etc.

Changed back to the role of Participant and now the 404 error reappears. In fact, this happens if the user has any other role than Keymaster.

Seems like you have done all the tests I know off, let’s search for other help.
