Hard Seat Sleeper, are you referring to Anointed and AWJunkies, or the phpBB-WP bridge fellows whose link I shared in my post?
At any rate, I have moved on from this bbconverter. I have wasted quite a few months and effort waiting for answers to my problems from AWJunkies. Too bad he isn’t willing to finish what he started.
Doesn’t look like we’ll be receiving any responses from the creators. It looks like they have abandoned the project.
I’m sure they receive email notifications of replies to this thread, and there have been so many questions posed but they haven’t bothered to come in to reply. Even their website forum has been quiet.
I’m checking out another possible solution to bridge phpBB3 to WP. Its a plugin available at https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-phpbb-bridge/.
I will be installing it as soon as I can squeeze a few hours in and hope it works.
Has anyone else tried this bridging plugin and care to give a review?
Any replies from the mods or plugin creators?
Seems only spammers are responding
Looks like this thread and plugin has been abandoned
I had high hopes for this plugin and forum but looks like I’ll have to look elsewhere. I’ve wasted enough time and effort on this!
Hi Anointed and AWJunkies, is there any update on the issues with the phpBB conversion that many users on this thread have highlighted?
Right now, I’m stuck in no-man’s land and would love to get a resolution of sorts.
If there is no further support or development into this plugin, then please let us know so that users like me can look at other solutions for our forum boards.
I appreciate all the work that has gone into this, but as it is, its not complete and not usable to anyone.
If anyone has successfully converted their phpBB board to bbPress using this converter, I’d like to hear from them.
Thank you in advance for any replies and help!
@aravoth2011, that would be a cool feature indeed! AWJunkies, can you add in this functionality?
AWJunkies – Merry Christmas/Congratulations/Happy New Year!
I look forward to your help here with our respective issues with bbconverter.
I hadn’t looked into many posts but assumed that the added characters were the same. I thought I could do a simple search and replace in the SQL file, but if it is as bjj_pl says, then this will not work.
I sure hope AWjunkies can jump in here to help us out soon.
Another problem I noticed for my converted forum is that the replies to the original post are missing. So many threads contain only 1 post. Anyone else seeing this?
Thanks for your help in this, Anointed One
Happy New Year 2012, everyone here! May the new year be a good and happy one for all!
One solution I can think of to correct this issue is to go through the SQL file and do a search and replace of this string of characters.
But, as I said in my post earlier, I tried removing the characters so that the original bbcode is restored, in this case the [img]tags, but the post still did not display the image correctly.
Any thoughts on this, anyone?
I believe that bjj’s example shows the converted code. The original should be:
Stacks:
The converted added the characters “:twwr5fiw” to the post.
Just like in my example:
The original bbcode post:
The converted code:
[img:33mwiaq9]http://www.swafineart.com/images/30.4.07/images/NightOfHeros_lr.jpg[/img:33mwiaq9]
The converter added the characters “:33mwiaq9” to the bbcode tags.
I hope that clarifies the issue we are facing here.
bjj and I have the same concern here. I too have posted above similar results with the conversion. My board has been converted and the strange codes remain.
I tried editing the post to the original bbcode but it doesn’t work.
Does bbPress use bbcode at all? I thought it does…
I am now in the midst of converting my phpBB3 forum to bbpress using this converter. I am having to keep refreshing the page every few hundred posts as it keeps stalling. I’m now at around post 15000 being converted. I have 47,000 posts, so there’s still some ways to go.
I have checked the converted posts results in the meantime and noticed that for posts with images, using phpBB’s BBCodes [img]tags, these posts contain strange characters. An example:
[img:33mwiaq9]http://www.swafineart.com/images/30.4.07/images/NightOfHeros_lr.jpg[/img:33mwiaq9]
Night of Heroes – The Dambusters by Philip West. The original phpBB post would have read:
Night of Heroes – The Dambusters by Philip West.
I would like to ask if the Converter doesn’t retain the bbcodes as is, but introduces these strange characters? Or is this part of the conversion process and after it is completed, I should see it return to normal?
Woohoo! Thank you, Adam! I’m going to now convert my phpBB3 forum to bbpress2.
I’ll report back on how it went.
Thanks again, Adam
Adam, congratulations on your upcoming wedding and marriage!
Many thanks for continuing to help us all here with your work on the phpBB converter. Your post is so tantalising to me and I’m sure others as well, and I’m just wondering when “updated real soon” might be…!
I’m also interested to hear your reply, as well as anointed’s, to MishaOLS’s question on converting another forum’s users to bbpress without also converting to WP’s database of users. I’m not exactly sure why I might also want that for my own forum (now and in the future), but I’m interested to hear your views on this anyway
Chrisella, does ForumConverter convert phpbb to bbpress 1 or 2 directly?
Oops, I just committed an “eggcorn” when I said “baited breath”.
I meant, waiting “with bated breath” which means “in a state of suspenseful anticipation.”
I tried converting my phpBB to bbpress 1 using an older converter, with the idea to then converting bbpress 1 to bbpress 2. However, while the posts were converted successfully, the users weren’t so all the posts were attributed to “Anonymous”.
Its a pity I met with a dead end there. My posts asking for help with that problem went unanswered; otherwise I would suggest that procedure here.
I believe there’s a huge installed based of phpbb forum owners looking to convert over to bbpress because of the attraction of integrating seamlessly with WP. I believe the number is even bigger compared to the other forum platforms such as Invision and vBulletin as phpBB is free.
SMF is also free but its newer than phpBB and so I believe there are fewer of such boards around.
Because of this, I hope the bbpress crew can see where they want to put in their efforts to create or complete the converter for phpbb.
It would be a great step forward for the community of bbpress users, don’t you agree
In reply to: An Open Queston About bbpressI am glad to read this.
I too have been looking to replace my phpbb board and integrate my existing forum with WordPress.
I’m concerned with the slow speed of responses and development on bbpress.
I know the developers are all doing this voluntarily and in their spare time. There are no guarantees in life and so even though people and companies may say they are committed to something, it doesn’t mean its forever as things change so rapidly in this world. We just have to move forward in faith and hope that things improve.
Thank you Adam for the work that you do.
This update you mention, would it happen to contain a converter for phpBB to bbpress as well (keeping fingers on both hands tightly crossed and holding my breath!)?
Hi there Anointed One. I urgently wish to convert my phpBB forum to bbpress.
Can you give me a ‘rough’ estimate on when this plugin can also do phpbb conversions?
Many thank in advance!
In reply to: phpbb3 -> bbpress converterThank you to wmnasef for this script!
I used the updated script provided by Abdessamad Idrissi at http://code.google.com/p/phpbb3-to-bbpress1-converter/downloads/list on my phpBB3 forum.
The conversion went smoothly and I could see the posts from my old forum appear in my bbpress forum.
However, all the posts had the authors listed as Anonymous, which means none of the users accounts were ported over.
Can someone help with this please? How did this happen and how can I fix this?
