Importing from phpBB to bbPress – gets stuck in a loop at step 16

I’m trying to import everything from a phpBB forum to bbPress, but it’s not working. Users aren’t being transferred, and the posts that do get moved (I’m not sure if it’s all of them) lack an assigned author. The process keeps getting stuck in a loop at step 16 due to an error. In the end, some topics appear on the forum (maybe all of them, maybe not—I can’t tell), but there are no actual users; the posts look as if they were written by guests, even though they have various names attached. The importer never finishes; it just stays stuck on step 16, endlessly processing the same thing.
Is there any way to fix this problem?
