Reasons that "Right Now in Forums" numbers would be changing on their own?

In the pane “Right Now in Forums” in my WP dashboard, the number of hidden topics, hidden replies and empty topic tags changes over time (the hidden topics and relies decrease and the empty tags increase) without any interaction on my part. It seems to be correct — the numbers of topics and replies that are in the trash decrease over time. I’m not emptying the trash and no one else has the ability to empty the trash, so are items in the trash being pruned as a result of a scheduled script or should I be looking for another reason?
