The best thing to do I think is to use BuddyPress. It seems like a lot of extra work, but you can really build a nice community that way.

BuddyPress has a lot of nice functions, indeed, but if you don’t need all of the features it’s sometimes better to only install what you really need.

I finally set up the plugin you found. It is easy to use once
I got the hang of it which took me a while. But the the author
of the plugin is very helpful.
Many thanks for your tip – it saved me a lot of bother.
