how to change the forum layout ?

hi everyone,
i would like to change the forum layout from compact to expanded so we can see more clearly the forums of a category.
I saw in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDAp8M7CuPk&feature=youtu.be than it was possible by using the R8 theme but how can i do that without using that theme ?
