In reply to: bbPress 2.1 – Theme Compatibility
Thanks John.
I’m using the Mingle theme which can be seen in action on my site http://www.geekandjock.com
That said, the author has already indicated he won’t be supporting bbPress even though the theme does support BuddyPress. His response was it was a fair amount of additional work for him to also provide theming support for bbPress.
No idea if that statement is true or will still be the case with this additional theming support that’s being released ‘soon’.
– what is the first of it’s kind?
– I’m happy to help where I can but I’m not a coder. Have answered a few forum questions but I think I ask more than I can answer
When you find something that actually works properly with bbPress, please do let us know.
In reply to: bbPress 2.1 – Theme CompatibilityCan I ga confirmation that the next version release of bbPress is going to try its darndess to work with my commercial WP theme so I (hopefully) don’t have to bother with all the hacking I look like I need to do, at the current moment?
That would certainly be a total godsend if that’s the case. Anyone confirm this as well as successes with commercial themes too?
And lastly, what’s the release roadmap on 2.1?
In reply to: New Integration for bbPress (PageLines)Unsure of its capability.
Is this plugin theme dependent on PageLines themes or will it function with other themes?
I’m interested if it will work with my Mingle theme and what the expected forum will look like.
Do you know of other installations using. This plugin that I can see?
In reply to: Integrating WP + BBP plugin + custom themeInteresting bbPress theme at http://www.binaryturf.com/forum/ which has sub forums and descriptions, for anyone’s interest.
In reply to: Spamming bbPressWell, I’ve got these installed:
bbPress Moderation
reCaptcha for bbPress 2.0
WangGuard
I also have ‘Anyone Can Post’ turned on as well. Little Spam coming my way now BUT I’d love if IntenseDebate was bbPress compatible
In reply to: Spamming bbPressTry installing the ‘bbPress moderation’ plugin and see if that helps.
In reply to: BBPress: No Support in the ForumsOn the comments conversation, by not standardizing to use WP comments and weaving off to use a custom post type, how do you think that leaves bbPress to counter to huge problem of Spam though?
Seems this alienates bbPress to utilize another great Automattic tool, IntenseDebate which I find an absolute godsend.
In reply to: BBPress: No Support in the ForumsIt’s one of those critical mass things, if you ask me.
I chose bbPress over others but was most frustrated when I discovered it’s theming integration issues. Thankfully Anointed came to my rescue.
The other issue of annoyance is the way it treats comments as a post-type which, to me anyway, removes it from being integrated with other services like IntenseDebate and Akismet – and obviously Spam is a real issue for forum operators.
I’m getting up to speed anyway and hope to help out where I can however most people’s challenges seem to be around theming problems and functionality limitations, not to mention lack of help that is split across to different websites.
On a final note, thank you indeed for the work on bbPress and everyone’s efforts. I’m sure it’ll get there.
In reply to: Integrating WP + BBP plugin + custom themeWish you the best of luck with the v2.x forums, tnwinn
In reply to: Integrating WP + BBP plugin + custom themeOh right, gotcha.
Yeah, the v2 bbPress forums look nowhere as good as the standalone ones.
I thought something might have been fixed in an updated bbPress release – not to be
In reply to: Integrating WP + BBP plugin + custom themeMate, the forum looks bloody great!
And I see the sue forums are displaying descriptions as well. How did you manage that? Is that due to using some latest bbPress version or something?
In reply to: Integrating WP + BBP plugin + custom themeThanks so much for your help, Shawn.
At least now the forums have some framework and don’t look like a blank page
I added a description to the Relationships forum and it’s weird how the subforum titles show first and then the main forum description – I guess that’s some CSS stuff at play again.
Yeah, it’s a great looking theme indeed.
In reply to: Integrating WP + BBP plugin + custom themeHey Anointed.
Thanks for your nice reply and offer to help out if you’re able.
Here’s a list of what I find lacking as far as theming goes in my current them.
– the forum descriptions are missing, other than the first one.
– there’s no borders defining the layout of forums and sub-forums
– the styling of the avatars isn’t carried over from the main them
– indented comment threading (though this might be a shortcoming of bbPress itself)
– I’d personally like to get rid of that ‘Freshness’ column too. Reasoning: when you’re trying to get increased activity in a forum that has a lack, seeing a bold indicator that it’s slow has a tendency to keep people away (that’s just a marketing point of view)
– the fonts, Title styling, icons and shadows
– check out the same theme’s style for BuddyPress here – http://para.llel.us/themes/mingle-wp/groups/web-design/forum/
– you can see that’s simply beautiful.
– it’s a great pity there’s so much confusion around BuddyPress, bbPress and how it’s made out that they’re integrated with WordPress until you come to discovering there’s so much that isn’t transferred from WP into a plugin like bbPress.
Anyway, ideally it would have been fantastic if the theme creator had done bbPress as well as BuddyPress however that isn’t going to happen as he says it’s too much work. As a relative newbie to WordPress, I simply wasn’t aware there were these sorts of pitfalls – I naively thought theming was a global site thing [groan]
Thanks
Martin
In reply to: Integrating WP + BBP plugin + custom themeYes, I’m in the same situation with the Mingle theme from ThemeForest, for my site at http://www.geekandjock.com
Great theme and styling which looks like cr*p when viewed with the bbPress plugin. Seems like the forum capability for WordPress is still in the dark ages, in my opinion.
I’ve migrated from Drupal to WordPress recently. I’d have thought that plugins would respect and act like child components of any theme being used for WordPress. Sadly, this sort of logic isn’t the case.
I’ve scoured the bbPress forums and styling seems to be the major problem as well as requiring a whole lot of work and effort, not to mention it also appears (to me) to be a convoluted exercise. This is my major regreat in migrating from Drupal to WordPress.
In reply to: Changing Post AuthorUmmm, can you explain how you actually do that?
I’m lost and can’t that that is possible. Would love some additional guidance, if possible.
Thank you
In reply to: Any Way to Convert WordPress Comments to BBPressHmmm, can I do that into another WP / bbPress site or does it have to be into the same installation that my current WP installation with the posts is running in?
And can it only convert a particular category as well I.e I’ve already set a ‘Forum’ category for the posts I’d like to convert.
Thanks for your help thus far too
In reply to: Any Way to Convert WordPress Comments to BBPressWell, it’s 7 months since the last comment and I’m wondering whether anything official did actually ‘come down the pipe’?
I’ve just converted my Drupal site over to a locally running WordPress / bbPress installation however all previous forums from my Drupal site are currently WP Posts since they’ve retained the comment structure.
I’m able to convert the Posts to Topics however the comments remain elusive, presumably since Replies are a custom content type and, for whatever reason, comments aren’t a content type. At least nothing that’s recognised by the converting plugin that I found.
Being able to convert a WP Post with comments to a Topic with Replies is about the only thing now that’s stopping the converted site from going live.
Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks
Martin
