Although I didn’t get the help from this forum, I was able to find out that I needed to download a plugin called “configure SMTP’ that made it work fine.
UPDATE:
After reading other forum topics, I changed the theme to TwentyTen and found that under my “community” link on that theme, there was not even a “forums” link to click on, although the other sub menus were showing. Perhaps this forum page hasn’t been created properly?
